The Battle of Khed took place on 12 October 1707, between Shahu I and the forces of Tarabai led by Dhanaji Jadhav. [1] The battle occurred at Khed, situated near the Bhima river to the north of Pune. [2]

Shahu I was the fifth Chhatrapati of the Maratha Confederacy founded by his grandfather, Shivaji I. He was born into the Bhonsle family, and was the son of Sambhaji I and Yesubai. At a young age, he was taken into custody at the Siege of Raigad by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, and held captive. He was released from captivity after the death of Aurangzeb in the hope of engineering an internecine struggle among the Maratha factions of Tarabai and Shahu. Shahu emerged victorious in the bloody Battle of Khed and was crowned as Chhatrapati.

Balaji Vishwanath Bhat was the first of a series of hereditary Peshwas hailing from the Bhat family who gained effective control of the Maratha Confederacy and other Mughal vassals during the early 18th century. Balaji Vishwanath assisted a young Maratha king Shahu to consolidate his grip on a kingdom that had been racked by civil war and persistently intruded on by the Mughals under Aurangzeb. He was called the Second Founder of the Maratha State. He secured a grant from the Mughal court that confirmed Shahu as the legitimate Mughal vassal, at the expense of his rival Sambhaji II. Later, his son Bajirao I became the Peshwa.

Shivaram Hari Rajguru was an Indian independence activist from Maharashtra, known mainly for his involvement in the assassination of a British police officer named John Saunders. He was an active member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and on 23rd March 1931, he was hanged by the British government along with his associates Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kolhapur State</span> Maratha princely state of India

The Kolhapur State was a Maratha princely state of India, under the Deccan Division of the Bombay Presidency, and later the Deccan States Agency. It was considered the most important of the Maratha principalities with the others being Baroda State, Gwalior State and Indore State. Its rulers, of the Bhonsle dynasty, were entitled to a 19-gun salute – thus Kolhapur was also known as a 19-gun state. The state flag was a swallow-tailed saffron pennant.

Pimpalgaon Tarf Khed is a panchayat village in the state of Maharashtra, India, on the left (east) bank of the Bhima River. Administratively, Pimpalgaon Tarf Khed is under Khed Taluka of Pune District in Maharashtra. The village is 11 km east of the town of Chakan, and 23 km by road south of the town of Rajgurunagar (Khed).

The Battle of Raigad occurred between the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Kingdom in 1689. Aurangzeb ordered his General Zulfiqar Khan to capture the Maratha king, Rajaram. Mughal forces attacked Raigad and the fortress fell, however Rajaram Maharaj escaped before that happened.

The Battle of Torna was fought on between the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Kingdom. The Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, ordered a siege Torna Fort. His commanders, Muhammad Amin Khan Turani and Tarbiyat Khan, defeated the Maratha occupants. In recognition of the difficult defences the Mughals had to overcome to capture this fort, Aurangzeb renamed it as Futulgaib.

The Battle of Jammu was fought between the Sikhs under the command of Banda Singh Bahadur against the Mughal forces near the hills of Jammu on 22 January 1712. The Mughals were able to achieve victory against the Sikhs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rasalgad</span>

Rasalgad is a fort in the Maharashtra state of India. It lies 15 km east of Khed City. The fort has been developed as a tourist attraction. Its fortification is in good condition. The fort lied on the south end of a narrow spur which joins with Suamargad and Mahipatgad in the north direction. In 2003 the fort was declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
