The Belfast Sabres (Officially the Belfast Down East Auto Parts Sabres) were a Canadian Junior C ice hockey team located in Belfast, Prince Edward Island. They played out of the Belfast Recreation Centre, and are coached by Devan Gunn. They were members of the Prince Edward Island Junior C Hockey League.

Team history

Unlike the average expansion franchise, the Sabres became a force in the PEIJCHL after only a few years in the league. They finished second in the league in both their second and third seasons, behind only South Side.

By their third season the Sabres had advanced to their first league playoff finals only to lose to the South Side.

Gilbert Perreault is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who played for 17 seasons with the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres. He was the first draft pick of the Sabres in their inaugural season in the NHL. He is well known as the centre man for the prolific trio of Sabres forwards known as The French Connection. The trio helped the Sabres reach the 1975 Stanley Cup Finals.

Steven Bradley Ott is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre and current assistant coach of the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). Ott also previously played for the Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens.

The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) is a Junior A ice hockey league under Hockey Canada, a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League. It consists of six teams from New Brunswick, which make up the EastLink North Division, five teams from Nova Scotia, and one team from Prince Edward Island which make up the Eastlink South Division. The winner of the MHL playoffs competes for the Centennial Cup against the winners of the 8 other tier 2 junior A leagues across Canada. Prior to the pandemic the MHL champions would participate in the Fred Page Cup. This tournament involved the Bogart Cup champions from the CCHL(Ontario), the Kent Cup champions from the MHL(Maritimes) and the winner of the La Coupe Napa of the QJHL(Québec) as well as a pre determined host. The winner would move on to compete for the Canadian National Junior A Championship. However with the departure of the BCHL whom ended affiliation with the CJHL in March 2021 as well as Hockey Canada in June 2023 becoming an independent league. No Centennial Cup qualifying tournaments such as the Kent Cup have been played since 2022 and instead all the league champions have directly advanced to the Centennial Cup.

The Prince Edward Island Junior C Hockey League is a Junior "C" ice hockey league in Prince Edward Island, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The league was known as the Prince Edward Island Minor Junior Hockey League until 2009.
