The barrios of Puerto Rico are the primary legal divisions of the seventy-eight municipalities of Puerto Rico. Each of Puerto Rico's 78 municipios are divided into geographical sections called barrios.
San Juan is the capital and most populous municipality in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States. San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, who called it Ciudad de Puerto Rico. Several historical buildings are located in San Juan; among the most notable are the city's former defensive forts, Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal, and La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas.

It has a land area of 1.03 sq mi (2.67 km2) and a 2000 Census population of 20,867.
Hato Rey Sur is one of the 18 barrios of the municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hato Rey Sur was part of the former municipality of Rio Piedras, before it was merged with the municipality of San Juan in 1951. Following the annexation of Rio Piedras, the city of San Juan, and its surrounding area now including Rio Piedras, quadrupled its former size.
