Bellator MMA: 2013 Summer Series was the third installment of the Bellator MMA Summer Series and started in June 2013. [1] Mixed martial arts tournaments were held in the heavyweight, [2] light heavyweight [2] and bantamweight [2] weight classes. Instead of the traditional eight-fighter tournaments Bellator has done throughout its run, it put on four-man tournaments. [1]
Originally, the plan was for three events over the summer months with an event in June, July and August. However, on June 23, it was confirmed that only two events would take place during this summer series. [3]

Bellator 96 featured the opening round of the 2013 Summer Series Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight tournaments. [5]
This event served as the lead in for the debut of Bellator's new reality TV series, Fight Master: Bellator MMA.
Michael Chandler was expected to defend his Lightweight Title against Dave Jansen on this card. However, on June 2, it was announced that Jansen had to pull out of the bout due to an injury. [6]
Vinicius Queiroz was originally scheduled to face Richard Hale in the heavyweight tournament. Queiroz, however, suffered a knee injury and was replaced Ryan Martinez. [7]
Both Derek Campos and Keith Berry missed weight for their fights; as a result, both fighters forfeited a portion of their purses to their opponents and the matches were changed to catchweight.
Both Seth Petruzelli & Renato Sobral retired from MMA competition after this event.

Background
The card featured Ben Askren's fourth title defense of the Bellator Welterweight Championship and Michael Chandler's second defense of the Bellator Lightweight Championship.
The card also featured the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Tournament Finals and Bantamweight Tournament Semifinals.
Douglas Lima and Ben Saunders were scheduled to fight in order to decide the next contender for the Welterweight title. However, on June 11, it was announced that Lima had to pull out of the bout due to an injury. [8]
Patricio Freire was originally scheduled to face The Ultimate Fighter veteran Rob Emerson. However, on July 12, it was revealed Emerson had to withdraw due to injury and was replaced by Jared Downing. [9]
The live airing featured the announcement of Bellator's first pay per view event for November 2, 2013 that will be headlined by Tito Ortiz versus Quinton Jackson.

Bellator MMA is an American mixed martial arts promotion founded in 2008 and based in Santa Monica, California owned and operated as a subsidiary of ViacomCBS. It is one of the largest combat sport promotions in the world and the second largest in the United States. The promotion takes its name from bellātor, the Latin word for "warrior".
David Hendrik Jansen is an American mixed martial artist who formerly competed in Bellator's Lightweight division. A professional competitor since 2007, Jansen has also formerly competed for the WEC and M-1 Global.
Bellator Fighting Championships: Season Four was the fourth installment of the Bellator Fighting Championships. Mixed martial arts tournaments were held in multiple weight classes, including three of the original tournament classes: Welterweight, Lightweight and Featherweight. Michael Chandler is an American professional mixed martial artist who currently competes in the lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). A professional competitor since 2009, Chandler first gained notoriety when he competed for Bellator MMA where he was in from 2010 to 2020. There, Chandler became a three–time Bellator Lightweight Champion and was the winner of the Bellator Season Four Lightweight Tournament, and held a promotional win-loss record of 18–5. He also competed in collegiate wrestling out of the University of Missouri, where he earned NCAA Division I All-American honors. As of January 25, 2021, Chandler is ranked #4 in the UFC Lightweight rankings.
