Meseret Defar Tola is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes chiefly in the 3,000 metres and 5,000 metres events. She has won medals at top-tier international competitions including Olympic and World Championship gold medals over 5,000 metres. She broke the world record in the event in 2006, broke it again in 2007 and held it until 2008, when fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba beat her time.
Paul Kipsiele Koech is a Kenyan runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He won the 2004 Olympic bronze medal in this event. His personal best of 7:54.31 minutes is the third fastest of all time.

At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Hassan secured a bronze medal in both the women's 5,000 m and 10,000 m events and gold in the women's marathon, becoming the only woman to win the Olympic gold medal in the 5,000 metres, 10,000 metres and Marathon races.

The men's 10,000 metres at the 2024 Summer Olympics was held at the Stade de France in Paris, France, on 2 August 2024. This was the 26th time in which the men's 10,000 metres has been contested at the Summer Olympics. A total of 27 athletes were able to qualify for the event by entry standard or ranking. Unlike other Olympic events, this event did not have heats or semifinals, with all qualified athletes instead competing in a single final.
