The Bengal Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tournament founded in 1887 as the Bengal Lawn Tennis Championships then the second oldest tournament in India. [1] The tournament was played at the Calcutta Cricket Club grounds, Calcutta, West Bengal, India. The championships ran until 1979 before it was discontinued.

History

Tennis was introduced to India in the 1880s by British Army and Civilian Officers. [2] In 1887 the Bengal Lawn Tennis Championships was inaugurated at Calcutta. [3] British players initially dominated the tennis tournaments in India. [4] In 1917 Mr. N.S. Nyer became the first Indian to win the men's singles championship. [5] The championships ran until 1970 but were discontinued

Venue

The first edition of the championships was played at the Calcutta Cricket Club (founded in 1792) [6] grounds.

The Middlesex Championships. or Middlesex Lawn Tennis Championships and also known as the Middlesex Open Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis founded at the Chiswick Park Lawn Tennis Club,Chiswick Park, Chiswick, Middlesex, Great Britain in 1884 and known as the Chiswick Park Club Open Lawn Tennis Tournament during the early editions of the event. The tournament was staged annually until 1949.

The Staffordshire Tennis Championships or Staffordshire County Lawn Lennis Championships or simply Staffordshire Championships was combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in July 1878 as the Staffordshire County Cricket Club Lawn Tennis Tournament. That event was initially held at Litchfield, Staffordshire. From the mid-1880s to 1890s the tournament was known as the Staffordshire Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1893 the Staffordshire Lawn tennis Association was formed. By the early 1920s it had become a county level event that ran until 1984.

The Aldershot Division Open was a late Victorian era men's grass court founded in 1879. The tournament ran until 1885 before it was discontinued.

The Hull Open was annual men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded as the Hull Westbourne Avenue Open Tournament in 1884. From 1905 to 1914 the tournament was co-branded as the East Yorkshire Championships. The tournament was organised by the Hull Lawn Tennis Club, Kingston-Upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The tournament ran until 1956.

The Western India Championships also known as the Western India Tennis Championships, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1888 as the Bombay Gymkhana Club Tournament. The championships was played at the Gymkhana Club grounds, Bombay, Maharashtra, India. The championships ran until 1980 before they was discontinued.

The Southern India Championships also known as the South Indian International Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament was founded in 1889 as the South India Championship. The championships was played at the Madras Gymkhana Club grounds, Madras, Tamil Nadu, India. The championships ran until 1980 before it was discontinued.

The Northern India Championships or formally the Northern India Lawn Tennis Championship and, also known as the Northern India Tennis Championships, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded as the North India Championship c. 1899. The first tournament was played at Delhi, India. The championships ran until 1970 before it was discontinued.

The Stourbridge Open also known as the Trophee Pernod Stourbridge for sponsorship reasons, was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in September 1887 as the Stourbridge Lawn Tennis Tournament, and first staged at the Stourbridge Cricket Club (f.1888) grounds, Stourbridge in what was then Worcestershire, but is now part of the West Midlands, England. This tournament has not had a continual history, being established then discontinued on four occasions. The last tournament took place in 1981.

The All India Hard Court Championships also known as the All India Hard Court Tennis Championships was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1946. The championships were first played at the Madras Gymkhana Club grounds, Madras, Tamil Nadu, India. The championships ran until 1972 before it was discontinued as part of the worldwide tennis circuit.

The tournament ran until 1933 when it was discontinued.

The Asian Championships also known as the Asian International Championships or Asian Lawn Tennis Championships was an open international men's and women's grass and clay court tennis tournament founded in 1949 as the International Championships of Asia. The tournament was one of eight official championships of the International Lawn Tennis Federation. It was first played at the Calcutta South Club, Calcutta, India. The international tournament was played at other locations until September 1972 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Tour.
