Berkley Brady is a Canadian filmmaker. She is known for writing and directing the 2022 horror film Dark Nature.

Early life

Brady is Métis. [1] [2] She spent her early childhood near Edmonton, later moving to Calgary in 1986 when she was six years old. [1] [3] Her great-uncle, James P. Brady, was a Métis activist who disappeared in 1967. [4]

Brady studied creative writing at the University of Victoria, [1] and received her master's degree at Columbia University in New York City. [5] [1]

Career

Prior to her directorial debut, Brady participated in the production of several short films and directed episodes of Secret History of the Wild West, an Aboriginal Peoples Television Network documentary series. [1]

In 2022, Brady wrote and directed the horror film Dark Nature in her directorial debut. The film stars Hannah Emily Anderson, Madison Walsh, Roseanne Supernault and Kyra Harper. [1] The film premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in the same year [6] and was screened at the Cannes Marché du Film. [5] [1] It was well-received by critics, with Rachel Reeves of Rue Morgue magazine calling the film "a vital feature debut with a strong voice, style and story", adding that Brady "mixes up a tasty cinematic cocktail strongly infused with her own creative flavor." [7]

Brady is working on an adaptation of Halfbreed, a 1973 memoir by Maria Campbell. [6] [4]

Personal life

Brady lives in Calgary, Alberta with her husband Ian Lister, a cinematographer, and their son. [1] Lister was the cinematographer of Brady's thesis film. [5]

Campbell has had great influence in her community as she is very politically involved in activism and social movements. Campbell is well known for being the author of Halfbreed, a memoir describing her own experiences as a Métis woman in society and the difficulties she has faced, which are commonly faced by many other women both within and outside of her community.

James Patrick Brady, better known as Jim Brady, was a Canadian Métis political leader and activist in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Along with Malcolm Norris, he is generally regarded as one of the two most influential Métis leaders of his era. Brady was a self-educated Marxist, Socialist, and Métis nationalist, as well as a member of the Communist Party of Canada. Brady was a strong advocate and voice for the Métis of Alberta and would go on to become an instrumental part in the formalization of today's contemporary Métis Settlements in Alberta. Brady is a member of the historic Metis Settlements "Famous Five" leadership.
