He began his television career in 1976, playing Jeff Webber in the American soap opera series General Hospital, and then rose to prominence as the lead actor in the television series MacGyver (1985–1992). He later appeared in films such as Through the Eyes of a Killer (1992), Pandora's Clock (1996), and Firehouse (1997).

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher is a British series of television films made by Hat Trick Productions for ITV, written by Helen Edmundson and Neil McKay. It stars Paddy Considine in the title role of detective inspector Jack Whicher of the Metropolitan Police. The Penguin Book of Modern Fantasy by Women is a reprint anthology of stories edited by A. Susan Williams and Richard Glyn Jones. It was published by Viking Press in May 1995. The anthology contains a wide number of stories by female authors throughout the 20th century, beginning with "The Demon Lover" (1941), and the stories are arranged chronologically. The anthology itself won the 1996 World Fantasy Award for Best Anthology.
The Tylee Cottage Residency is an artist-in-residence programme facilitated by the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui, New Zealand. The scheme began in 1986 as a partnership between the Sarjeant Gallery, the Wanganui District Council and the QEII Arts Council of New Zealand. It was established by gallery director, Bill Milbank, QEII Arts Council adviser, John McCormack, and inaugural artist, Laurence Aberhart. It is currently managed by the Sarjeant Gallery and funded by the Whanganui District Council. Each year, the selected artist works full-time on their work for 2–12 months and resides in Tylee Cottage. Tylee Cottage was built in 1853 and is one of Whanganui's oldest homes.
