Bentivolio,a Republican,defeated Democratic nominee Syed Taj,a physician,in the November 6,2012 election. Bentivolio was defeated for the Republican nomination in his bid for a second term by attorney David Trott. He launched a write-in campaign for the November 2014 general election but lost again to Trott. After Trott announced he was not seeking reelection in 2018,Bentivolio again sought election in the eleventh district,but finished last in the primary. In October 2019,Bentivolio announced that he would again run for his former congressional seat against Democrat Haley Stevens in the 2020 election. Bentivolio would finish third in the Republican primary.

Michigan's 99th House of Representatives district is a legislative district within the Michigan House of Representatives located in parts of Bay,Clare,and Gladwin counties,as well as all of the Arenac,Iosco,and Ogemaw counties. The district was created in 1965,when the Michigan House of Representatives district naming scheme changed from a county-based system to a numerical one. The district lines were redrawn to now consist of Iosco,Ogemaw and Arenac counties in their entirety and portions of Bay,Clare and Gladwin counties.
