The Big Ten Conference is the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. Founded as the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives in 1896, it predates the founding of its regulating organization, the NCAA. It is based in the Chicago area in Rosemont, Illinois. For many decades the conference consisted of 10 prominent universities, which accounts for its name. As of 2014, it consists of 14 member institutions and 2 affiliate institutions, with 4 new member institutions scheduled to join in 2024. The conference competes in the NCAA Division I and its football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A, the highest level of NCAA competition in that sport.

Laurence A. "Moon" Mullins was an American college football player, coach and athletic director. He played fullback under Knute Rockne at the University of Notre Dame. He served as the head coach at St. Benedict's College from 1932 to 1936, Loyola University of New Orleans from 1937 to 1939, and St. Ambrose University in 1940 and 1947 to 1950. Mullins was the athletic director at Kansas State University and Marquette University.
Lawrence R. "Bubba" Cunningham is an American college athletics administrator. He was named athletic director for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011. He was previously athletic director for Ball State University from 2002 to 2005 and for the University of Tulsa from 2005 to 2011.

The Navy–Notre Dame football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Navy Midshipmen football team of the United States Naval Academy and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team of the University of Notre Dame. It was played annually from 1927 to 2019, which made it the longest uninterrupted intersectional rivalry in college football, the third-longest uninterrupted college football rivalry overall, as well as the second-longest never-interrupted rivalry in Division I college football (FBS). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 game was canceled, ending these lengthy streaks, even though both schools still played a fall season schedule in 2020.
Lawrence Richard Williams II is a former American football offensive guard who played five seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the tenth round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame and attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. Williams was also a member of the San Diego Chargers of the NFL. He was the athletic director of the Portland Pilots from 2004 to 2011 and the Marquette Golden Eagles from 2012 to 2013.
