BioDigital is a New York-based biomedical visualization company that is often referred to as being "Google Earth for the Human Body". [1] [2] BioDigital offers an interactive, 3D software platform that enables individuals and businesses to explore and visualize health information. [3] Their flagship product, the BioDigital Human, is a "searchable, customizable map of the human body". [4]

Contents

The BioDigital Human Platform has over a million users, [5] including doctors, medical students, and yoga instructors. [6] New York University School of Medicine has used the software to teach medical students about anatomy. [7] [8]

The company also offers a set of API's that allow developers to use the company's imaging technology.

History

The company started as a consulting business in 2002, founded on the premise that 3D technology could be leveraged to make medical topics more comprehensible, accessible, and compelling. [9] In 2011, the company expanded their technology to reach the greater public, compiling all visualizations into a proprietary web-based virtual model of the human body, the BioDigital Human. [10] The BioDigital Human was one of the early systems to leverage WebGL, which allows any supported browser to render 3D models in webpages without plugins. [11]

In 2013, the company received a series of funding led by FirstMark Capital, New York University’s NYU Innovation Fund, a group of angel investors. [12]

Awards and recognition

The BioDigital Human was featured at TEDMED 2012. [13]

In 2013, BioDigital was named the winner of SXSW's Classic Interactive Award. [14]

The company also received an ON for Learning Award from Common Sense Media in March 2014. [15]

BioDigital was honored as a Best Health Digital Resource by the Health Information Resource Center's Web Health Awards in June 2014. [16]

In 2015, BioDigital Human received a Webby Award in the category of Best Health Website. [17]

In 2015, BioDigital was a Silver Finalist for the Edison Awards in the field of Research & Education. [18]

Partnerships

BioDigital has partnered with the international charity Smile Train for the creation of a cleft lip and palate simulator. The simulator is an interactive teaching tool designed to train surgeons in developing countries on cleft lip and palate surgical repair. BioDigital and Smile Train received an award for Outstanding Achievement in Modeling & Simulation by the National Training Simulation Association in December 2013. [19] The companies were selected to showcase the technology at the 2014 TEDMED Conference in Washington DC. [20]

AR can be defined as a system that incorporates three basic features: a combination of real and virtual worlds, real-time interaction, and accurate 3D registration of virtual and real objects. The overlaid sensory information can be constructive, or destructive. This experience is seamlessly interwoven with the physical world such that it is perceived as an immersive aspect of the real environment. In this way, augmented reality alters one's ongoing perception of a real-world environment, whereas virtual reality completely replaces the user's real-world environment with a simulated one.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Visible Human Project</span>

The Visible Human Project is an effort to create a detailed data set of cross-sectional photographs of the human body, in order to facilitate anatomy visualization applications. It is used as a tool for the progression of medical findings, in which these findings link anatomy to its audiences. A male and a female cadaver were cut into thin slices, which were then photographed and digitized. The project is run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) under the direction of Michael J. Ackerman. Planning began in 1986; the data set of the male was completed in November 1994 and the one of the female in November 1995. The project can be viewed today at the NLM in Bethesda, Maryland. There are currently efforts to repeat this project with higher resolution images but only with parts of the body instead of a cadaver.

3D Indiana is a commercial Educational software for teaching and research on the human anatomy. The name is an acronym for Three-Dimensional Interactive Digital Anatomy. This software is based on the principles of volumetric anatomy which uses three intersecting coordinate planes to locate the organs of the human body based on mathematical calculations. This is in contrast to the traditional method of describing the location of the organs in relation to one another. The Gall bladder is traditionally described thus: 'It is situated on the right side of the body closely in contact with the inferior surface of the liver, along the right edge of the quadrate lobe in a shallow fossa extending from the right edge of the porta hepatis to the inferior lobe of the liver'.

VOXEL-MAN is the name of a set of a computer programs for creation and visualization of three-dimensional digital models of the human body derived from cross-sectional images of computer tomography, magnetic resonance tomography or photography. It was developed at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Applications include diagnostic imaging, digital anatomical atlases and surgery simulators. The 3D interactive atlases of anatomy and radiology for brain/skull and inner organs are available for free download. The name Voxel-Man is derived from the term voxel, the elementary cuboid component of a digital representation of a three-dimensional object. Occasionally the name Voxel-Man is also used as a general term for a digital representation of the human body.

MAK Technologies, formerly doing business as VT MAK, Inc. is a software company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts that provides commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) modeling and simulation software. The company develops and sells software for distributed simulations that system integrators, governments, and research institutions use to build and populate 3D simulated environments. Users include medical, aerospace, defense, and transportation industries. In addition to offering COTS software, MAK provides the following services: simulation content creation, software customization, interoperability, research and development, and training.

Ars Electronica Linz GmbH is an Austrian cultural, educational and scientific institute active in the field of new media art, founded in Linz in 1979. It is based at the Ars Electronica Center (AEC), which houses the Museum of the Future, in the city of Linz. Ars Electronica's activities focus on the interlinkages between art, technology and society.
