The BioGeM Institute (Biologia e Genetica Molecolare, "Biology and Molecular Genetics") is a nonprofit consortium formed by the National Research Council (CNR), the University of Naples "Federico II", the LUMSA of Rome, the Trieste AREA Science Park, the University of Udine, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn of Naples, the University of Sannio in Benevento, the University of Foggia, the University of Milan Bicocca, the Second University and the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, the Chamber of Commerce of Avellino and the local mountain community of Ufita Valley. BioGeM was inaugurated in 2006 by Nobel laureate Rita Levi Montalcini [2] and comprises research laboratories, services and teaching facilities. Scientific research, led by “Gaetano Salvatore” Genetics Research Institute (IRGS), takes place within Genetics and Translational Medicine (GTM) department and is aimed at understanding biological mechanisms and identifying the genes involved in the development and proliferation of various human diseases; the research is based on the use of animal models raised in a high level laboratory [3] after the approval of the ethics committee for animal experimentation. [4] Research primarily aims at fighting cancer and degenerative diseases, [5] [6] often in collaboration with international groups. [7] [8] [9]

Furthermore, the pharmacological research is carried out by a proper department named Medicinal Investigational Research (MIR), whose task covers the experimental verification of new drugs and the release of the related certifications. [10] Furthermore, the training activities take place in a specific functional area named Life and Mind Science School (LIMSS).

Since 2010 Biogem has yearly hosted a meeting named Le due culture ("The two cultures") which over the years has been attended by a number of Nobel laureates [11] and also (in 2018) the president of Italy Sergio Mattarella. [12] [13] The objective of the meeting is to find a common ground between humanistic and scientific knowledge. [14]

The institute also hosts an office of Sopra Steria, a French company specialized in consulting and digital services. [15] Since 2013 Biogem has a forensic genetics laboratory too. [16]

Museum

Within the research center there is also Biogeo, a museum [17] dedicated to the origins of geological history throughout the eras from the Precambrian until the Jurassic. Founded in collaboration with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the museum attempts to showcase and illustrate the origin and development of life on Earth, with particular regard to the relationship between genome͵ environment and evolution. [18] Starting from 2012, Biogeo has provided itself with a tetrasphere, designed by the Italian physicist Paco Lanciano. [19]

Lacedonia is a comune in the province of Avellino, Campania region, southern Italy, overlooking the Osento River which flows into the Lago di San Pietro, an artificial lake. The town is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia.

A contemporary of Watson and Crick, he spent a significant part of his international career heading the Department of Somatic Cell Genetics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, but throughout his life maintained ties to his home country of Italy. Siniscalco pioneered the study of population and molecular genetics through his research on the population of Sardinia, analyzing the genes responsible for thalassemia and G6PD deficiency syndrome, among others. Siniscalco also played an important role in the development of the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) in its early years, and was ultimately awarded the title of Commendatore by the Italian government in recognition of his contributions to his field.

Xi Jinping's visit to Italy and France was a state visit of President and General Secretary Xi Jinping of China to Italy and France from 21–26 March 2019. It was his second trip to the Southern European region in five months, the first state visit to Italy and France in 10 and 5 years respectively and his first foreign trip of 2019. It also coincided with the 55th anniversary of the establishment of China-France relations in 1964. During the visits, Xi met with Emmanuel Macron and Giuseppe Conte, the President of France and Prime Minister of Italy respectively. The two visits were part of a bigger European trip by Xi which also included a visit to Monaco to meet with Albert II, Prince of Monaco. A topic that came up in both visits was the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Arianese dialect, typical of the territorial area of Ariano Irpino, is a vernacular variety of the Irpinian dialect, belonging in turn to the Neapolitan group of southern Italian dialects. Like all Romance languages, it descends directly from Vulgar Latin, a language of Indo-European stock that has been widespread in the area since Roman times.
