Bird Town (foaled April 11, 2000) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After showing some promise when winning one of her four starts as a two-year-old in 2002, she emerged as one of the best North American fillies of her generation in the following summer with wins in the Kentucky Oaks and the Acorn Stakes. She also finished second in the Test Stakes and the Beldame Stakes before being retired at the end of the season with a record of four wins in twelve races.

Background

Bird Town is a bay mare bred in Kentucky by her owner Marylou Whitney, the widow of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. She was from the first crop of foals sired by Cape Town, whose five wins included the 1998 Florida Derby. [2] His other progeny have included the Monmouth Oaks winner Capeside Lady and the Lone Star Derby winner Southern Africa. [3] Bird Town's dam Dear Birdie won two minor races but became a very successful broodmare, producing several other winners including the Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone. [4] Whitney sent her filly into training with Nick Zito.

Racing career

2002: two-year-old season

Bird Town began her track career at Keeneland on October 9 in a maiden race over seven furlongs in which she was ridden by Pat Day and finished second of the eleven runners behind Star of Atticus. A month later she was again partnered by Day when she was moved up in distance to contest a maiden over one and one sixteenth miles at Churchill Downs. Starting favourite against ten opponents, she took the lead from the start and won by six and three quarter lengths from Throne. Two weeks later over the same course and distance, she started the 0.4/1 favorite for an allowance race, but was beaten three quarters of a length by In Case of Wind. Bird Stone ended her first season, by traveling to Florids for the Three Rings Stakes at Calder Race Course. Ridden by Eibar Coa, she started the 1.4/1 favorite, but after contesting the early lead she weakened in the closing stages and finished third, beaten three quarters of a length and a neck by Dakota Light and Never Fail. 2003: three-year-old season

Bird Town remained in Florida in early 2003, running twice at Gulfstream Park. In an allowance race on January 16 the filly was ridden by Day led into the straight before finishing second, beaten a neck by the Shug McGaughey-trained favorite Yell. On February 23 Bird Town, ridden by Coa, was moved down in the distance for the seven furlong Charon Stakes and won by twelve and a half lengths from Crafty Brat, after taking the lead on the penultimate turn. [6] The filly prepared for the Kentucky Oaks with a run in the Grade II Beaumont Stakes over seven furlongs at Keeneland on April 10. Ridden by Coa, she started the 3.3/1 second favorite and contested the lead from the start before finishing second, one and a quarter lengths behind the winner My Boston Gal.

On 2 May, Bird Town was one of twelve fillies to contest the 129th running of the Kentucky Oaks in front of a 100,523 crowd at Churchill Downs in which she was ridden for the first time by Edgar Prado. Her opponents included My Boston Gal, Yell and In Case of Wind as well as Elloluv and Lady Tak, first and second in the Ashland Stakes and Santa Catarina (runner-up to Storm Flag Flying in the Frizette Stakes). Lady Tak started favorite ahead of Elloluv and My Boston Gal, with Bird Town being made an 18.2/1 outsider. Bird Town stumbled exiting the starting gate before being settled by Prado in eighth place on the outside. She turned into the stretch in sixth before making a sustained late run, taking the lead from Santa Catarina approaching the final furlong and going clear to win by three and a quarter lengths. Yell took third place ahead of Elloluv and My Boston Gal. After the race Zito said "What heart this filly has. She never runs a bad race. Consistency makes you great". Whitney, whose late husband had won the race four times between 1936 and 1975 said "I love my homebreds. We buy horses, too. But homebreds mean so much to me". [7]

On her next appearance Bird Town was matched against Lady Tak and the 2002 American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Storm Flag Flying in the Grade I Acorn Stakes over one mile at Belmont Park on June 6. Starting at odds of 2.65/1 the filly was sent into the lead by Prado soon after the start and held off a sustained challenge form Lady Tak to win by a head, with the favored Storm Flag Flying finishing sixth of the seven runners. [8] Bird Town dropped back to seven furlongs for the Grade I Test Stakes at Saratoga in July. Starting the 1.75/1 favorite she raced just behind the leaders but on this occasion proved no match for Lady Tak and finished second, beaten four and a half lengths by the winner. Three weeks later, the filly started second favorite for the Alabama Stakes over ten furlongs at the same track but failed to recover after being bumped in the early stages and finished fifth of the six runners behind Island Fashion. Zito was unable to account for the filly's poor run, saying "It just wasn't our day. She's been running all year, so who knows?" [9]

At Belmont on October 4, Bird Town was matched against older fillies and mares for the first time in the Grade I Beldame Stakes over nine furlongs. Ridden by Aaron Gryder, she took the lead soon after the start and set the pace before being overtaken on the final turn by the favored Sightseek and finished second, four and a half lengths behind the older filly. Despite her defeat, Zito praised his filly saying "I can't be more thrilled... I don't care what anybody tells me, Bird Town is the best three-year-old filly right now. We put up a good fight and that's all I cared about." [10] Her retirement was announced three days later.

Assessment and awards

In the Eclipse Awards for 2003, Bird Town was named American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly beating the French-trained Six Perfections by 96 votes to 94. [11]

In 2018, Bird Town was one of eight mares followed by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's Foal Patrol, which allows viewers to view livestreams of Thoroughbred mares in the late stages of pregnancy and with their young foals. [22]

My Miss Aurelia is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2011, she was unbeaten in four races including the Adirondack Stakes, Frizette Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and was voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly at the Eclipse Award. After missing the early part of the following season through injury she took her winning run to six with two more victories including a win over Questing in the Cotillion Stakes. She sustained her first defeat when second to Royal Delta in the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic and was beaten in her only subsequent race that year. She finished third on her only appearance as a four-year-old and was retired in September 2014 to Stonestreet Farm.

In the following year she won the Grade II Azeri Stakes before recording successive Grade I victories in the Apple Blossom Handicap, Ogden Phipps Handicap and Personal Ensign Stakes.

Take Charge Lady is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading fillies of her generation in the United States, winning 11 of her 22 races between April 2001 and November 2003, earning over $2 million. She recorded Grade I victories in the Ashland Stakes and consecutive editions of the Spinster Stakes, and also won the Alcibiades Stakes, Silverbulletday Stakes, Fair Grounds Oaks, Dogwood Stakes and Arlington Matron Stakes.

Take Charge Brandi is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. A descendant of the outstanding broodmare Take Charge Lady, she was one of the leading juvenile fillies in North America in 2014. After winning only one of her first five races she sprang a 66/1 upset when winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and followed up with victories in the Delta Princess Stakes and the Grade I Starlet Stakes. After winning a listed stakes race early in 2015, a bone chip in her knee, discovered prior to her anticipated start in the Rebel Stakes, took her out of contention for the Kentucky Oaks. Returning to the track in August 2015, following two lackluster performances, she was retired in September, 2015.

Countess Diana was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1997, she dominated the juvenile fillies division in North America, winning five of her six races including the Schuylerville Stakes, Spinaway Stakes, Alcibiades Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. At the end of the year she was voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and rated the best American two-year-old filly for more than fifty years. Her subsequent racing career was relatively disappointing: she failed to win in four starts in 1998 before winning two minor races in 1999. After her retirement from racing she had limited success as a broodmare and died in 2006.

Caressing is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won five of her eighteen races in a track career which lasted from July 2000 until November 2002. As a two-year-old she won two of her first four races before recording a 47/1 upset win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, which led to her being named American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. In the following year her career was disrupted by illness but she did win the La Troienne Stakes and the Singapore Plate. After competing without success as a four-year-old she was retired from racing and has had some success as a broodmare – the dam of two graded black type placed horses and multiple Grade 1 winner West Coast, Eclipse Champion 3 Year Old Male of 2018.

Sweet Catomine is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After finishing second on her racecourse debut as a two-year-old in July 2004, she emerged as the best juvenile filly of her generation in the United States, winning the Del Mar Debutante Stakes, Oak Leaf Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies before being voted American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. In the following spring she won the Santa Ysabel Stakes and Santa Anita Oaks and was considered a serious contender for the Kentucky Derby before finishing fifth in the Santa Anita Derby and was retired from racing shortly afterwards. Her run in the Santa Anita Derby was controversial as there were allegations that her connections had not been fully open about her training problems. The complaints were dismissed after a formal hearing by the local racing authority.

Proud Spell is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2007 she was rated one of the best juvenile fillies in the United States, winning her first three races including the Matron Stakes before finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was even more successful in her second season, winning four races including the Fair Grounds Oaks, Kentucky Oaks, Delaware Oaks and Alabama Stakes. She was retired from racing after a single unsuccessful appearance as a four-year-old.

Wait A While is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Although she showed some good form on dirt she had her greatest success on turf and won twelve of her twenty-four races in a track career which lasted from August 2005 until October 2008. As a two-year-old she won two of her four races including the Miss Grillo Stakes. In the following year she won the Davona Dale Stakes, Sands Point Stakes, American Oaks, Lake Placid Stakes and Yellow Ribbon Stakes in a campaign which saw her being voted that season's American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. Her third season was disrupted by illness and injury but she did win the Honey Fox Stakes and the Ballston Spa Handicap. In her final season Wait A While won the San Gorgonio Handicap and recorded repeat victories in the Ballston Spa Handicap and the Yellow Ribbon Stakes. Her racing career ended controversially when she was disqualified for failing a drug test after finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Farda Amiga is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred in Kentucky, but owned and trained by Brazilian horsemen, she showed some promise racing on turf as a juvenile in 2001, winning on her racecourse debut and finishing fifth at Grade III level on her only subsequent start. In the following season she won one of her first two races on turf before being switched to run on dirt and showed improved form. After a third-place finish in the Santa Anita Oaks, she recorded an upset win in the Kentucky Oaks and then recovered from illness to win the Alabama Stakes in August. She was retired after finishing second to the American Horse of the Year Azeri in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Her record as broodmare has not been impressive.

Surfside is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in North America in 1999, winning four of her six races including the Frizette Stakes and the Hollywood Starlet Stakes as well a finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. In the spring of the following year she won the Santa Ysabel Stakes, Las Virgenes Stakes and the Santa Anita Oaks and returned from injury to win the Clark Handicap. She was retired after two unsuccessful races as a four-year-old.

Songbird (horse) American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Songbird is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse who was a two-time Eclipse Award winner. She won thirteen times, nine of them in Grade I races, and had career earnings of almost $4.7 million.

Minstrella was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in Europe in 1986 when she won four of her seven races. She recorded her first win in the Chesham Stakes before going on to record Group One victories in the Phoenix Stakes, Moyglare Stud Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. The last of these wins came after the controversial disqualification of Forest Flower. Minstrella failed to win in four attempts as a three-year-old and was retired from racing. She had considerable success as a broodmare in the United States. Minstrella died in 2012 at the age of twenty-eight.

Lailani is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until October 2001 she won seven of her ten races including Group One/ Grade I races in three countries. After showing little ability in two races as a juvenile she made relentless progress as a three-year-old, winning seven consecutive races including the Irish Oaks in Ireland, the Nassau Stakes in England and the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes in the United States. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare.

Promising Lead is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She did not race until she was three years old in 2017 when she won a maiden race on her debut and went on to win the Upavon Fillies' Stakes before being narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Prix de l'Opéra. In the following year she won the Middleton Stakes and the Pretty Polly Stakes on her only two starts. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners.
