Bishop Bowers School is a private school under the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra. It was founded by the Missionary Sisters, Servants of the Holy Spirit, commonly identified by the acronym SSpS, in 1975. [1] Since its inception, has been headed by Missionary Sisters from the religious congregation within the Catholic Church. Bishop Bowers is a preparatory school with a kindergarten, primary and junior high school department. [1] The kindergarten and primary department is located in Lartebiokorshie, [2] and the junior high school is located in Korle-Bu.
Bishop Bowers School was founded by the Missionary Sisters, Servants of the Holy Spirit, in 1975. [2] It was named after the Late Bishop Emeritus of Accra, Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, in commemoration of his efforts in promoting education in the then Catholic diocese of Accra (now Catholic archdiocese of Accra). [2] In September 1975, Sis. Virginalis, SSpS from Netherlands, together with five teachers and two office staff members moved from sister school St. Theresa's School to start the school. [2] The school opened its doors to 226 pupils from kindergarten to class 5. These were pupils who lived around Larterbiorkorshie, Mamprobi and Korle-Bu, but attended St. Thera's School (also founded by Missionary Sisters, Servants of the Holy Spirit) in North Kaneshie. [2]
Teaching syllabus used in providing pupils and students with basic education is in accordance with the approved Ghana Education Service (GES) syllabus in preparation to sit the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), needed to gain admissions into Senior High Schools. [2]
The primary department is located at No.3 Hutton Mills Street, Zoti, Lartebiokorshie. It has three main blocks which makes up the administration, classrooms and assemblyhall, computer laboratory, canteen, lavatories, a library and staff common room. There is also a large playground. [2]
In 1987, a request for the release of land to establish a junior high school was sent to the secretary of health through the medical administrator of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Land was offered near the nurses' flats for the construction of Bishop Bowers Junior High School. [2]
Both primary and junior high school department have classes with two streams. The KG1 classes are named after co-founders of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit.
The KG2 classes are named after the Holy Spirit Missionary Congregation Sisters to first arrive in Ghana in 1946.
Each primary class is named after a flower.
The junior high school classes are named after saints, to inspire exemplary behaviour. [2]

Arnold Janssen, was a German-Dutch Catholic priest and missionary who is venerated as a saint. He founded the Society of the Divine Word, a Catholic missionary religious congregation, also known as the Divine Word Missionaries, as well as two congregations for women. In 1889 he founded in Steyl, Netherlands, the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit and in 1896 at the same place the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters. He was canonized on 5 October 2003, by Pope John Paul II.

The Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit, also known as Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters, or simply Holy Spirit Sisters is a religious congregation within the Catholic Church. The group has 3,000 members in 46 different countries. The congregation was founded by Arnold Janssen in 1889 in Steyl, the Netherlands. Janssen had previously founded in 1875 a male missionary congregation called Divine Word Missionaries. Janssen chose Maria Helena Stollenwerk, called Mother Maria (1852–1900) and Hendrina Stenmanns, called Mother Josepha (1852–1903) as co-foundresses.

Founded in 1913, College of the Holy Spirit Manila was established originally as Holy Ghost College through the invitation of then Manila Archbishop Jeremias Harty. Located initially on Legarda Street, the campus later moved along Mendiola Street, inside the Malacañang Palace Complex. Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary, is an all-boys boarding school, located in Effiduase, Koforidua, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It was established in 1958 by Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers SVD as a Catholic seminary for boys who wished to become priests. Students are offered courses such as general arts, general science, business and visual arts to pursue and after their stay in the school, they have to sit for an external examination called the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to be placed in any of the tertiary institutions in the country.

The Ridge Church School is an independent and parochial co-educational preparatory day school in Accra, Ghana. Situated between the Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue and Guinea Bissau Road and opposite the Efua Sutherland Children's Park, it was founded by the Accra Ridge Church in 1957, the year of Ghana's independence from the United Kingdom. The Ridge Church School is located on the premises of the church. It was the first wholly private basic school to be established in modern Ghana. The Accra Ridge Church was the first international solely English-speaking Protestant church in Ghana. The school is inter-denominational Christian, holding ties to the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, that assign chaplains to both the church and school. The school runs a ten–year programme from kindergarten to lower primary through upper primary to junior high and culminating in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The school largely follows the prescribed curriculum and syllabus of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
