Black Lives in Music

Black Lives in Music (BLIM), founded in the UK in 2020, [1] and launched in the UK in 2021, [2] works for equal opportunities for Black, Asian and ethnically diverse people in the jazz and classical music industry, opportunities that include the chance to learn a musical instrument, attend a music school, pursue a career in music and reach senior levels within the sector without facing discrimination. [3]

Charisse Beaumont, Chief Executive and Women in Music Roll of Honour 2022, [4] and Roger Wilson, Director of Operations, are co-founders.

Activities

BLIM have recorded a five-part digital video series of one-to-one conversations with well-known figures in the music industry such as Paulette Long, OBE [5] and Sheku Kanneh-Mason [6] who was a member of the Chineke! Orchestra, founded by Chi-chi Nwanoku to give opportunities to black and minority ethnic classical musicians as well as to perform pieces by neglected black composers.

BLIM has set up "BLIM Connect", a mentoring scheme designed to support young musicians as, for example, they prepare for conservatoire auditions. [7]

Data on diversity in the music industry exists, such as that only 2% of teachers at conservatoires are from diverse backgrounds. [8] In 2021, however, BLIM published the report of a survey of over 1,700 respondents, entitled "Being Black in the Music Industry".[ citation needed ] Black professionals in the music industry were encouraged to take part by Dr Kadie Kanneh-Mason so that data could be contributed on how black people experience working in the UK music industry and on the obstacles they face. [9] A large proportion of the black music professionals surveyed stated that they had faced bullying, harassment, micro aggressions and other forms of racism. Many, especially women, believed that their mental health had deteriorated as a result. [10] Key findings highlighted the gender pay disparity, and the pressure on Black women in the music industry to change their behaviour, voice, and appearance to fit in with white expectations. In 2022, Charisse Beaumont gave evidence on behalf of BLIM to the "Misogyny in Music" enquiry of the House of Commons Women and Equalities Select Committee highlighting the gender pay gap between black women and white women and men in the music industry. The session was recorded and can be viewed. [13] [14]

Coinciding with Black History Month in the UK, The Independent newspaper granted free advertising to BLIM. [15]

In 2023, BLIM set up a voluntary UK Music Industry Anti-Racism Code of Conduct designed to tackle lack of employment opportunities, and low pay. The code is backed by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority and is supported by several record labels. [16] BLIM hopes to publish an annual report detailing which organisations have done well in terms of the code.

In 2023, BLIM presented research and advocacy work to the House of Commons All-Party Parliamentary Group on Music asking for government action on the Gender and Ethnic pay gap in the music industry. [17]

Chinyere Adah "Chi-Chi" Nwanoku is a British double bassist and professor of Historical Double Bass Studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Nwanoku was a founder member and principal bassist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a position she held for 30 years.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a British cellist who won the 2016 BBC Young Musician award. He was the first Black musician to win the competition since its launch in 1978. He played at the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle on 19 May 2018 under the direction of Christopher Warren-Green. Also performing at the wedding was the traditional choir of St. George's Chapel led by James Vivian and a gospel choir conducted by Karen Gibson named, the Kingdom Choir. As of 2021, Kanneh-Mason plays a Matteo Goffriller cello that was made in 1700.

Leigh-Anne Pinnock is an English singer and actress. She rose to prominence as a member of the girl group Little Mix, who were formed, and won the eighth series of The X Factor UK. As part of the group she won three Brit Awards—becoming the first girl group to win British Group. They also achieved nineteen top-ten singles and five number-ones on the UK Singles Chart, before going on hiatus in 2022. In 2021, she made her acting debut in the film Boxing Day.

Tomorrow's Warriors (TW) is a jazz music education and artist development organisation that was co-founded in 1991 by Janine Irons and Gary Crosby, committed to championing diversity, inclusion and equality across the arts through jazz, with a special focus on "Black musicians, female musicians and those whose financial or other circumstances might lock them out of opportunities to pursue a career in the music industry". Crosby drew inspiration from having been a member of the Jazz Warriors, a London-based group of musicians that in the 1980s showcased many young Black British musicians who went on to achieve international success.

Nirmala Rao is a British academic and the current vice chancellor of Krea University. She also served as vice chancellor of the Asian University for Women, Chittagong, Bangladesh from 1 February 2017 to January 2022. and as Pro-Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London from 2008 to 2016.

Chineke! Orchestra is a British orchestra, the first professional orchestra in Europe to be made up of majority Black & ethnically diverse musicians. The word Chineke derives from the Igbo language meaning "God". The orchestra was founded by musician Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE and their debut concert was in 2015 at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.

Kevin Le Gendre is a British journalist, broadcaster and author whose work focuses on Black music. He is deputy editor of Echoes magazine, has written for a wide range of publications, including Jazzwise, MusicWeek, Vibrations, The Independent On Sunday and The Guardian, and is a contributor to such radio programmes as BBC Radio 3's J to Z and BBC Radio 4's Front Row. At the 2009 Parliamentary Jazz Awards Le Gendre was chosen as "Jazz Journalist of the Year".

Scott Caizley FRSA is a British music educator, pianist and academic.

Timothy Ridout is a British violist and 1st Prizewinner of the prestigious Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition.

Isata Kanneh-Mason is a British pianist. She is the sister of and frequent collaborator with cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. She has been described as "one of today's most in-demand classical musicians".
