Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church in Durham, North Carolina. It is located in the West Durham Historic District.
The church, originally called West Durham Presbyterian Church was built on 13th Street (also called Presbyterian Street) in 1905. [1] [2] In 1916, the church was renamed Blacknall Memorial in honor of Dr. Richard Blacknall Sr. and his son, Richard Blacknall Jr. [1] The Blacknall family were prominent members of the West Durham community; Richard Blacknall Sr. owned Blacknall's Drugstore and James Blacknall served as the first sheriff of Durham County. [1] The Blacknalls started the Presbyterian congregation in 1892 as a mission of First Presbyterian Church. [1]
In January 1921, Rev. C. J. Whitley resigned as pastor of the church due to disputes with church officials over church policies. [3]
A new church sanctuary was built in 1923 on the corner of Perry Street and 8th Street. [1]
An educational building was added to the campus in 1964. [1] More additions were made in 1990 and 2008. [1] In 2015, the church announced plans to spend $1 million to purchase land on Iredell Street for a parking lot. [4]
The church is a member of the Presbyterian Church USA under the authority of the New Hope Presbytery. [5]
Pullen Memorial Baptist Church is a Baptist church known for its progressive theology located in Raleigh, North Carolina, US, right beside North Carolina State University. Walltown is a historically African-American neighborhood in Durham, North Carolina. The neighborhood is located between West Durham Historic District and Trinity Historic District, north of Duke University East Campus. Historically, the neighborhood was a working class neighborhood for African-American employees of Duke University and local tobacco and textile mills in Durham. Walltown was named after George Wall, a former enslaved person, who was one of the first people to purchase a lot in the area. Members of the community were active in the civil rights movement and desegregation in Durham. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, Walltown has been undergoing gentrification.

Whitehall Terrace, also known as the Richard H. Wright II House, is a Colonial Revival mansion in Durham, North Carolina. Completed in 1929, it was built for businessman Richard H. Wright II and his wife, Mary Scalon Wright. Whitehall Terrace was one of the first houses constructed on the north side of Durham's Duke Park neighborhood. Recognized as a historic landmark by the Durham City-County Planning Department and the Durham Architectural and Historic Inventory, it was included in Duke Park's nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
