Blake Nill (born February 16, 1962 [1] ) is a former Canadian football defensive lineman and the current head coach for the University of British Columbia's football team, the UBC Thunderbirds. [2] He is a three-time Vanier Cup champion as a head coach and was awarded the Frank Tindall Trophy in 1999.

University career

Nill played CIAU football for the Calgary Dinosaurs as a defensive lineman from 1980 to 1982. [3]

Professional career

Nill was drafted in the third round, 19th overall, in the 1983 CFL Draft by the Montreal Concordes of the Canadian Football League. [4] He was originally drafted as a defensive lineman, but converted to the offensive line in his rookie year. [5] He played in 44 regular season games with the Concordes/Alouettes franchise. [5] He also spent time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but did not play in any regular season games for those teams. [3] [5]

Coaching career

St. Francis Xavier X-Men

While completing his Master's of Education at St. Francis Xavier University, Nill first began coaching for the St. Francis Xavier X-Men as the team's defensive coordinator in 1992. [3] He coached for the X-Men for six seasons, highlighted by an appearance in the 32nd Vanier Cup game in 1996. [3]

Saint Mary's Huskies

Nill was named the head coach for the Saint Mary's Huskies football team beginning with the 1998 season. [3] In his second season, he led the Huskies to a first place finish in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference and an appearance in the 35th Vanier Cup. [3] He also won the Frank Tindall Trophy as the CIAU Coach of the Year in 1999. In 2001, he led the team to an undefeated season, punctuated by the Huskies' victory in the 37th Vanier Cup game. [3] He won his second championship as a head coach in 2002 as the Huskies became the third football program to win back-to-back championships following the 38th Vanier Cup victory. [3] His team made a fourth appearance in 2003, but lost to the Laval Rouge et Or. He left Saint Mary's following the 2005 season, where he posted a 49–15 regular season record with the Huskies program. [6]

Calgary Dinos

On February 23, 2006, Nill was named head coach of his alma mater, Calgary Dinos. [6] At the time, he took over a program that had not won a playoff game in ten years. [3] In his third season, in 2008, he led the Dinos to not only their first playoff win in 1996, but also their first Hardy Cup championship since 1995. [3] This began a period of Canada West dominance as the Dinos won six consecutive conference championships from 2008 to 2013. [3] However, the team could not replicate the success on the national stage as the Dinos appeared in three Vanier Cups with Nill as head coach, but lost all three times, in 2009, 2010, and 2013. [3]

UBC Thunderbirds

On December 9, 2014, Nill was named head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds. [2] In his first year as head coach, in 2015, he defeated his former team, the Dinos, in the Hardy Cup, and then won his third Vanier Cup in the 51st Vanier Cup victory over the Montreal Carabins. [3] In 2023, the Thunderbirds finished in first place in Canada West for the first time since 1999 and won their first Hardy Cup since Nill's first season with the team.

Shomari Gyasi Williams is the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the UBC Thunderbirds of U Sports football. He is a former professional Canadian football defensive end who played in parts of six seasons in the Canadian Football League. He was drafted first overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 2010 CFL Draft after Saskatchewan traded up to be in a position to draft him. Williams played one season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before being traded back to Saskatchewan. He played college football for the Queen's Golden Gaels and the Houston Cougars.

The 46th Vanier Cup took place on November 27, 2010, at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City, Quebec, determining the CIS Football champions for 2010. The Laval Rouge et Or defeated the Calgary Dinos 29–2 to win their sixth national title in twelve years. Including the playoffs, the Rouge et Or won thirteen games, a single season record. Laval's defence held Calgary to 147 yards on offence; the Dinos' only points came on a conceded safety in the second quarter.

Kirby Fabien is a former professional Canadian football offensive lineman and is the offensive line coach for the UBC Thunderbirds football team of U Sports.

The 2002 CIS football season began on August 27, 2002, and concluded with the 38th Vanier Cup national championship on November 23 at the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, with the Saint Mary's Huskies winning their second consecutive championship and third overall. Twenty-six universities across Canada competed in CIS football this season, the highest level of amateur play in Canadian football, under the auspices of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

Steven Sumarah is the head coach of the Saint Mary's Huskies of U Sports football. He has also been the head coach of the Canada National Junior Football Team since 2016. As the head coach, he led Team Canada to a IFAF World Junior Championship in 2018 with a 13-7 win over Team Mexico in Mexico City.

He was drafted first overall in the 1986 CFL Draft by the Stampeders and won a Grey Cup championship with the team in 1992. He went to Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary, Alberta and played CIAU football for the Dinos where he won Vanier Cup championships in 1983 and 1985.

Greg Vavra is a former Canadian football quarterback who played five seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Calgary Stampeders, BC Lions and Edmonton Eskimos.

Stavros Anastasios Katsantonis, nicknamed "the Bakersfield Bandit", is a Canadian football defensive back for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played U Sports football for the UBC Thunderbirds. In college he developed a reputation for forcing turnovers, setting school records, as well as cracking the conference and national record books earning 20 career interceptions as well as a total of 10 forced/recovered fumbles. In his first collegiate season, he garnered national attention with six interceptions and a total of four forced and recovered fumbles in seven games. In his true freshman season, he would go on to be proven as an integral part of the 2015 Vanier Cup Champion T-Birds, and received the Bruce Coulter Award as the Vanier Cup's Defensive MVP. Katsantonis would go on to be a 3× first team All-Canadian at the safety position during his collegiate tenure.

He was drafted by the Elks with the 14th overall selection in the 2021 CFL Draft. From 2018 to 2019, he played U Sports football for the University of Calgary Dinos, where he was a Vanier Cup champion in 2019. Prior to transferring to Calgary in 2018, he attended and played one season for the University of Maine Black Bears of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in 2017.
