Blake Nill (born February 16, 1962 [1] ) is a former Canadian football defensive lineman and the current head coach for the University of British Columbia's football team, the UBC Thunderbirds. [2] He is a three-time Vanier Cup champion as a head coach and was awarded the Frank Tindall Trophy in 1999.

University career

Nill played CIAU football for the Calgary Dinosaurs as a defensive lineman from 1980 to 1982. [3]

Professional career

Nill was drafted in the third round, 19th overall, in the 1983 CFL Draft by the Montreal Concordes of the Canadian Football League. [4] He was originally drafted as a defensive lineman, but converted to the offensive line in his rookie year. [5] He played in 44 regular season games with the Concordes/Alouettes franchise. [5] He also spent time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but did not play in any regular season games for those teams. [3] [5]

Coaching career

St. Francis Xavier X-Men

While completing his Master's of Education at St. Francis Xavier University, Nill first began coaching for the St. Francis Xavier X-Men as the team's defensive coordinator in 1992. [3] He coached for the X-Men for six seasons, highlighted by an appearance in the 32nd Vanier Cup game in 1996. [3]

Saint Mary's Huskies

Nill was named the head coach for the Saint Mary's Huskies football team beginning with the 1998 season. [3] In his second season, he led the Huskies to a first place finish in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference and an appearance in the 35th Vanier Cup. [3] He also won the Frank Tindall Trophy as the CIAU Coach of the Year in 1999. In 2001, he led the team to an undefeated season, punctuated by the Huskies' victory in the 37th Vanier Cup game. [3] He won his second championship as a head coach in 2002 as the Huskies became the third football program to win back-to-back championships following the 38th Vanier Cup victory. [3] His team made a fourth appearance in 2003, but lost to the Laval Rouge et Or. He left Saint Mary's following the 2005 season, where he posted a 49–15 regular season record with the Huskies program. [6]

Calgary Dinos

On February 23, 2006, Nill was named head coach of his alma mater, Calgary Dinos. [6] At the time, he took over a program that had not won a playoff game in ten years. [3] In his third season, in 2008, he led the Dinos to not only their first playoff win in 1996, but also their first Hardy Cup championship since 1995. [3] This began a period of Canada West dominance as the Dinos won six consecutive conference championships from 2008 to 2013. [3] However, the team could not replicate the success on the national stage as the Dinos appeared in three Vanier Cups with Nill as head coach, but lost all three times, in 2009, 2010, and 2013. [3]

UBC Thunderbirds

On December 9, 2014, Nill was named head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds. [2] In his first year as head coach, in 2015, he defeated his former team, the Dinos, in the Hardy Cup, and then won his third Vanier Cup in the 51st Vanier Cup victory over the Montreal Carabins. [3] In 2023, the Thunderbirds finished in first place in Canada West for the first time since 1999 and won their first Hardy Cup since Nill's first season with the team. The Thunderbirds appeared in the 58th Vanier Cup, but lost to the Carabins. [7]

The Vanier Cup is a post season university football championship game, used to determine the national champion in U Sports football. The game is the final for the winners of the Uteck Bowl and the Mitchell Bowl. Kirby Fabien is a former professional Canadian football offensive lineman and is the offensive line coach for the UBC Thunderbirds football team of U Sports.

The 2002 CIS football season began on August 27, 2002, and concluded with the 38th Vanier Cup national championship on November 23 at the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, with the Saint Mary's Huskies winning their second consecutive championship and third overall. Twenty-six universities across Canada competed in CIS football this season, the highest level of amateur play in Canadian football, under the auspices of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

Steven Sumarah is the head coach of the Saint Mary's Huskies of U Sports football. He has also been the head coach of the Canada National Junior Football Team since 2016. As the head coach, he led Team Canada to a IFAF World Junior Championship in 2018 with a 13-7 win over Team Mexico in Mexico City.

Brian Dobie is the head coach for the University of Manitoba's football team, the Manitoba Bisons. His Bisons have appeared in two Vanier Cups, winning in 2007. He has won five Canada West Coach of the Year awards and was also named CIAU Coach of the Year in 2001. He is a former Canadian football wide receiver where he played for the Bisons.

Kent Warnock is a defensive line coach for the Calgary Dinos of U Sports football and he is a former professional Canadian football defensive lineman who played for eight seasons for the Calgary Stampeders and BC Lions. He was drafted first overall in the 1986 CFL Draft by the Stampeders and won a Grey Cup championship with the team in 1992. He went to Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary, Alberta and played CIAU football for the Dinos where he won Vanier Cup championships in 1983 and 1985.

Wayne Harris Jr. is a former Canadian football linebacker and was the head coach for the University of Calgary's football team, the Calgary Dinos, from 2015 to 2023.

The Laval Rouge et Or football team represents Laval University in Quebec City in the sport of Canadian football in U Sports. The program began its first regular season in 1996 and has quickly become one of the most successful programs in Canadian university football history. The Rouge et Or have won a record 11 Vanier Cup championships and their most recent victory occurred at the 57th Vanier Cup in 2022. They are also the only program to have played in four straight Vanier Cups and have a record of 11–2 in Vanier Cup games. The Rouge et Or have also won the Dunsmore Cup 16 times since 1999, demonstrating their historical dominance in their conference.

The UBC Thunderbirds football team represents the University of British Columbia athletics teams in U Sports and is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. On a national level, the team has won the Vanier Cup championship four times, in 1982, 1986, 1997 and, most recently, in 2015. The team has also lost twice in the title game, in 1978 and 1987. Stavros Anastasios Katsantonis, nicknamed "the Bakersfield Bandit", is a Canadian-American professional football defensive back for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played U Sports football for the UBC Thunderbirds. In college he developed a reputation for forcing turnovers, setting school records, as well as cracking the conference and national record books earning 20 career interceptions as well as a total of 10 forced/recovered fumbles. In his first collegiate season, he garnered national attention with six interceptions and a total of four forced and recovered fumbles in seven games. In his true freshman season, he would go on to be proven as an integral part of the 2015 Vanier Cup Champion T-Birds, and received the Bruce Coulter Award as the Vanier Cup's Defensive MVP. Katsantonis would go on to be a 3× first team All-Canadian at the safety position during his collegiate tenure.

Greg Knox is a Canadian football coach who is the defensive coordinator for the York Lions of U Sports football. He played professionally as a defensive back with the Calgary Stampeders for seven years where he won two Grey Cup championships. He is also a two-time Vanier Cup champion after winning as a player with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in 1991 and then as a defensive coordinator with the McMaster Marauders in 2011. He was formerly the head coach of the Marauders from 2016 to 2018.

Daniel Joseph Dorazio was an American professional football coach who coached for 26 years in the NCAA, 22 years in the Canadian Football League (CFL), and for one year in U Sports. He was a four-time Grey Cup champion after winning with the Calgary Stampeders in 1998 and 2001 and with the BC Lions in 2006 and 2011. Under his direction as an offensive line coach, he had four players win the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award.
