Blanka Amezkua (born 1971) is a Mexican-American Latinx inter-disciplinary contemporary artist. [1] Collaboration, radical pedagogy, and community building are central to her art making and projects. Formally trained as a painter, her creative practice is greatly influenced and informed by folk art and popular culture, from papel picado to comic books.
Amezkua was born in Mexico City and raised in Los Angeles, California. [2] She earned a B.A. from California State University at Fresno, and she attended the Scuola Libera del Nudo of the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence, Italy, between 1997 and 1998 and is formally trained as a painter. [3] [4]
Amezkua is known for having initiated an artist-run space in her bedroom called the Bronx Blue Bedroom Project (BBBP) in 2008. In 2010, BBBP's two-year trajectory was included in the show "Alternative Histories" at Exit Art in New York City. [5]
The space was also included in 2010, in the seminal book Alternative Histories - New York Art Spaces 1960 to 2010 , MIT Press.
From 2010 to 2016, she lived between New York City and Athens, Greece and began a project titled " 3///3 ...three walls on wednesdays... ", an open invitation for artists from anywhere in the world to exhibit their work on three portable walls that she carried and placed throughout the city.
In 2012 she initiated 8 to 8: State of Creative Emergency an opportunity for artists in any field to craft an idea and present it in public space for twelve hours straight. [6]
In the spring of 2014 she founded Fo Kia Nou 24/7, now FokiaNou Art Space. The space hosts exhibitions, workshops and projects inside an apartment in the center of Athens. Now, this artist-run space is under the direction of two artists, Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris, who took it over in the fall of 2016.
In 2016 Blanka initiated AAA3A - acronym for her actual address; it is an artist-run space in the South Bronx crafting living room occurrences, face-to-face exchanges, meals, dialogue, workshops, residencies and art in the former home of the Bronx Blue Bedroom Project (BBBP) .

Amezkua's work was exhibited in the traveling group show The Future is LATINX, which debuted at Eastern Connecticut State University's Art Gallery. Exhibition Coordinator Yulia Tikhonova noted that the exhibition was intended to "draw attention to the rich cultural production of our Latino population as we continue on our path to becoming a 'minority white' nation [...] This community will dramatically change our politics, media, education, and cultural landscape. This is the future our exhibition anticipates." [11] The Future is LATINX was on view at the Eastern Connecticut State University Art Gallery in Windham, Connecticut from October 8 - December 2, 2020. [12] The exhibition traveled to Clark University's Schiltkamp Gallery under the title Latin + American from March 15 – May 9, 2021 [13] and Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, Connecticut from August 30 – October 1, 2021. [14] Amezkua showed her work alongside artists Tanya Aguiñiga, Alicia Grullón, Glendalys Medina, Natalia Nakazawa, Esteban Ramón Pérez, Lina Puerta, Shellyne Rodriguez, Felipe Baeza, Lionel Cruet, David Antonio Cruz, Ramiro Gomez, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Dante Migone-Ojeda, and Vick Quezada. Judy Chicago is an American feminist artist, art educator, and writer known for her large collaborative art installation pieces about birth and creation images, which examine the role of women in history and culture. During the 1970s, Chicago founded the first feminist art program in the United States at California State University, Fresno which acted as a catalyst for feminist art and art education during the 1970s. Her inclusion in hundreds of publications in various areas of the world showcases her influence in the worldwide art community. Additionally, many of her books have been published in other countries, making her work more accessible to international readers. Chicago's work incorporates a variety of artistic skills, such as needlework, counterbalanced with skills such as welding and pyrotechnics. Chicago's most well known work is The Dinner Party, which is permanently installed in the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. The Dinner Party celebrates the accomplishments of women throughout history and is widely regarded as the first epic feminist artwork. Other notable art projects by Chicago include International Honor Quilt, Birth Project, Powerplay, and The Holocaust Project. She is represented by Jessica Silverman gallery.
The feminist art movement in the United States began in the early 1970s and sought to promote the study, creation, understanding and promotion of women's art. First-generation feminist artists include Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro, Suzanne Lacy, Judith Bernstein, Sheila de Bretteville, Mary Beth Edelson, Carolee Schneeman, Rachel Rosenthal, and many other women. They were part of the Feminist art movement in the United States in the early 1970s to develop feminist writing and art. The movement spread quickly through museum protests in both New York and Los Angeles, via an early network called W.E.B. that disseminated news of feminist art activities from 1971 to 1973 in a nationally circulated newsletter, and at conferences such as the West Coast Women's Artists Conference held at California Institute of the Arts and the Conference of Women in the Visual Arts, at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C..

The Bronx Museum of the Arts (BxMA), also called the Bronx Museum of Art or simply the Bronx Museum, is an American cultural institution located in Concourse, Bronx, New York. Whitfield Lovell is a contemporary African-American artist who is known primarily for his drawings of African-American individuals from the first half of the 20th century. Lovell creates these drawings in pencil, oil stick, or charcoal on paper, wood, or directly on walls. In his most recent work, these drawings are paired with found objects that Lovell collects at flea markets and antique shops.
Martha Wilson is an American feminist performance artist and the founding director of Franklin Furnace Archive art organization. Dawn Clements (1958–2018) was an American contemporary artist and educator. She was known for her large scale, panoramic drawings of interiors that were created with many different materials in a collage-style. Her primary mediums were sumi ink and ballpoint pen on small to large scale paper panels. In order to complete a drawing she cut and pasted paper, editing and expanding the composition to achieve the desired scale. Her completed drawings reveal her working process through the wrinkles and folds evident in the paper. She described her work as "a kind of visual diary of what [she] see[s], touch[es], and desire[s]. As I move between the mundane empirical spaces of my apartment and studio, and the glamorous fictions of movies, apparently seamless environments are disturbed through ever-shifting points of view."

Guadalupe Maravilla, formerly known as Irvin Morazan, is a transdisciplinary visual artist, choreographer, and healer. At the age of eight, Maravilla was part of the first wave of unaccompanied, undocumented children to arrive at the United States border in the 1980s as a result of the Salvadoran Civil War. In 2016, Maravilla became a U.S. citizen and adopted the name Guadalupe Maravilla in solidarity with his undocumented father, who uses Maravilla as his last name. As an acknowledgment to his past, Maravilla grounds his practice in the historical and contemporary contexts belonging to undocumented communities and the cancer community. Maravilla's studio is located in Brooklyn, New York.
Esteban Ramón Pérez is an American artist who produces multi-media paintings and sculptures. His sociopolitical artwork often emphasizes subjective memory, spirituality, and fragmented history. Pérez earned a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2017 and an MFA in painting and printmaking from the Yale School of Art, New Haven, Connecticut, in 2019. Pérez’s work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions, including shows at Artspace, New Haven, Connecticut; Eastern Connecticut State University Art Gallery, Windham, Connecticut; Transmitter Gallery, Brooklyn; James Cohan Gallery, New York; Gamma Galería, Guadalajara, Mexico; Calderón, New York; the Arlington Arts Center, Virginia; Charles Moffett, New York; and Lehmann Maupin, New York. Solo exhibitions include Staniar Gallery, Lexington, Virginia. Pérez was selected for the NXTHVN Fellowship Program and is a 2022 recipient of the Artadia Award. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
