He was the third actor of this name in a family of actors and managers, and one of the most famous 19th century American comedians. Beginning as a young child, he continued as a performer for most of his 76 years. Jefferson was particularly well known for his adaptation and portrayal of Rip Van Winkle on the stage, reprising the role in several silent film adaptations. After 1865, he created no other major role and toured with this play for decades.

North Secretary Island is located in the Gulf Islands where Trincomali Channel and Houstoun Passage meet in the Gulf Islands region of the South Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is 138 acres (0.56 km2) in size and is located in Trincomali Channel as part of the Secretary Islands group off the north tip of Saltspring Island. There are two islands in the Secretary Islands group, the southern being named South Secretary and the larger one being named North Secretary Island. Davis Bend, Mississippi, was a peninsula named after planter Joseph Emory Davis, who owned most of the property. There he established the 5,000-acre Hurricane Plantation as a model slave community. Davis Bend was about 15 miles south of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and was surrounded by the Mississippi River on three sides.
