The Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC),formerly known as the Oregon Liquor Control Commission,is a government agency of the U.S. state of Oregon. The OLCC was created by an act of the Oregon Legislative Assembly in 1933,days after the repeal of prohibition,as a means of providing control over the distribution,sales and consumption of alcoholic beverages. On May 26,2017,Jeremy Joseph Christian fatally stabbed two men and injured a third after he was confronted for shouting racist and anti-Muslim slurs at two black teenagers,Destinee Mangum and Walia Mohamed,on a MAX Light Rail train in Portland,Oregon,United States. Two of the victims,Ricky John Best of Happy Valley and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche of Portland,were killed;the third victim,Micah David-Cole Fletcher,survived with serious wounds.
In 2016,a report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) revealed that the U.S. state of Oregon had an estimated homeless population of 13,238 with about 60.5% of these people still unsheltered. In 2017,these numbers were even higher. As of January 2017,Oregon has an estimated 13,953 individuals experiencing homelessness. Of this homeless population,1,083 are family households,1,251 are veterans,1,462 are unaccompanied young adults,and 3,387 are individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. As of 2022,17,959 people total experienced homelessness in Oregon,with 2,157 individuals being youth under 18,6,671 being female,10,931 being male,and 131 being transgender. Also among the 17,959 total homeless in 2022,15,876 were Non-Hispanic/Non-Latino,2,083 were Hispanic/Latino,13,960 were white,1,172 were Black,African American,or African,101 were Asian or Asian American,880 were Native American,and those of multiple race were 1,619. Oregon has seen an increase in its total homeless population consistently every year since 2010. In last three years specifically Oregon has seen a 98.5% increase 2021-2022,22.5% increase 2020-2021,and a 13.1% increase 2019-2020.
Danielle Outlaw is an American former law enforcement officer. She served as commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department in Philadelphia from 2020 to 2023,chief of police of the Portland Police Bureau in Oregon from 2017 to 2019,and deputy chief of the Oakland Police Department in California from 2013 to 2017.
The Portland Police Bureau was founded in 1870,and has been making societal changes in their city before others across the country,naming the first female police officer,Lola Baldwin,in 1908,being the first Bureau to ever do so in the United States. Its interaction with the LGBTQ community dates back to as early as 1912,with the Portland Vice Scandal,which involved many arrests in the community due to “indecency”or even counts of sodomy,when the arrests had little viable evidence and were heavily biased. The community kept low throughout the next few decades,until the early 1960s,when the community began to grow in size along with the rest of the city. Writers for papers such as The Oregon Journal stated:“The unmentionable people are virtually untouchable and they are growing stronger each week.”These reports were odd and prompted some early arrests in the 60s for “sex and pornography offenses”which prompted uproar. After these small incidents,the police became hands off with the LGBTQ community,and throughout the decades have embraced their inclusion in the Portland community,swearing to protect and serve all citizens of Portland. In 1977,the city recognized a national gay pride day,and campaigns against bigoted state measures in the 1990s helped halt discrimination and put Portland on the path to its current inclusive social environment.
The End Domestic Terrorism rally,sometimes subtitled "Better Dead Than Red",was a far-right demonstration organized by the Proud Boys and held in Portland,Oregon on August 17,2019. The event,the purpose of which was to promote the idea that the "antifa" anti-fascist movement should be classified as "domestic terrorism",received national attention. The rally drew more counter-demonstrators than participants,with at least one group urging its members in advance not to attend,and ended with the Proud Boys requesting a police escort to leave.
Jami L. Resch is the former chief of police of the police bureau of Portland,Oregon,United States. She served in that role from December 31,2019,until June 8,2020.
Starting in May 2020,protests following the murder of George Floyd were held in the city of Portland,Oregon,concurrent with protests in other cities in the United States and around the world. By July 2020,many of the protests,which had been held every day since May 28,drew more than 1,000 participants. Protests continued into August,September,and October 2020,often drawing hundreds.
Charles "Chuck" Lovell is the former chief of police of the Portland Police Bureau,in Portland,Oregon. He was named chief on June 8,2020,amid protests over the murder of George Floyd and police brutality. Lovell is the fourth black head of the Portland Police and the 50th police chief in PPB's history. Lovell served as chief until October 11,2023,when Bob Day was sworn in as interim chief of police.
Michael Schmidt is an American attorney and a progressive prosecutor. He has served as the Multnomah County District Attorney since August 2020. Originally set to begin his term on January 1,2021,Governor Kate Brown appointed him to the job early,in August 2020,to replace Rod Underhill,who retired in July. Schmidt will be succeeded by Nathan Vasquez on January 1,2025 at the end of his term after conceding loss in the primary election in May 2024.
Kayse Jama is an American politician currently serving as a Democratic member of the Oregon State Senate,representing Oregon's 24th Senate district,which includes parts of Clackamas and Multnomah Counties. Jama was appointed by the Clackamas and Multnomah County Board of Commissioners to replace Shemia Fagan,who was elected Oregon Secretary of State in 2021.
In October 2024,a series of arson incidents targeted ballot drop boxes across the United States during the 2024 presidential election. Fires set in ballot drop boxes have occurred in Washington,Oregon,and Arizona,resulting in damage to hundreds of ballots.
