The Borregos Salvajes Toluca (English: Toluca Wild Rams), or simply Borregos Toluca, team represented the Toluca campus of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) in college football from 1995 to 2021. The Borregos Toluca last competed in the Jacinto Licea Conference, ONEFA's top division.
Borregos Toluca has won one National Championships in 2017 and two Conferencia Premier titles (2017 and 2018).
The team played in the Estadio La Congeladora, the only college stadium in Mexico with blue turf. [2]
American football at the ITESM Toluca started with the youth program in 1990. In 1995, the school created the Liga Mayor program and participated in the Conferencia Nacional for the first time under head coach Santiago Caballero, finishing with a 1–7 record. The next season the team improved to a 3–5 record. In 1997, now led by coach Rafael Garnica, Borregos Toluca finished 7–1 and won the Conferencia Nacional title after defeating the Guerreros Aztecas UNAM 35–22 in the championship game. By winning the Conferencia Nacional, Borregos Toluca was promoted to the Conferencia de los 10 Grandes, the top level of college football in Mexico at the time. [3]
In 2000, Diego García Miravete, who won nine National Championships with Cóndores UNAM as head coach, was appointed as Borregos Toluca new head coach. Led by García Miravete the team became one of the top teams of the league, but failed to win any championship, always reaching semifinals from 2001 to 2005, but unable to qualify to the championship game. Miravete left the team in 2006 and was replaced by Adolfo Jamal. [3]
For the 2007 season, Borregos Toluca was penalized by ONEFA for using an ineligible player and were barred from the playoffs. [4]
Adolfo Jamal left the team at the end of the 2008 season and was replaced by Juan Carlos Maya. For the 2009 season, all the ITESM teams left the ONEFA and created their own league, the Campeonato Universitario Borregos. [5] In 2010, Borregos Toluca joined as a charter team to the newly created Conferencia Premier CONADEIP. [3]
In 2012 Horacio García was appointed head coach of the team. [6]
In 2014, Borregos Toluca reached a championship game for the first time in its history, but lost against the Aztecas UDLAP 14–17. [7]
2017 was the team's best season. After finishing the regular season 7–2, Borregos Toluca reached the Conferencia Premier championship game and defeated Aztecas UDKAO 31–28, winning the Conferencia Premier title. Later, in the National Championship, Borregos Toluca defeated the ONEFA champions Pumas CU 16–15, being crowned National Champions for the first time. [8]
In 2018, Toluca repeated as champions of the Conferencia Premier, defeating rivals Borregos Salvajes Monterrey 28–21 in Monterrey. Since ONEFA and CONADEIP did not reach an agreement for the season, no National Championship was played. [9]
In 2019, after eight seasons with the team, Horacio García left ITESM Toluca to coach Pumas Acatlán. [10]
In June 2019, ITESM Toluca appointed former offensive coordinator Gustavo Tella as the team's new head coach. Tella previously played in Borregos Toluca as wide receiver and placekicker during his college career and played professionally from 2005 to 2007 for the Rhein Fire and Berlin Thunder of the NFL Europa. [11]
On 2 February 2022, authorities of ITESM Campus Toluca announced that the school's American football program for Liga Mayor would be disbanded. [12]

The National Student Organization of American Football is the major college football league in Mexico.
Pumas CU UNAM, also known as "Pumas Dorados", "Pumas", or "Universidad" is the varsity American football team representing the National Autonomous University of Mexico. It is one of the oldest and most important teams in Mexico. They maintain a fierce rivalry with teams from the National Polytechnic Institute particularly with its Miguel Hidalgo-based team from Santo Tomás, Águilas Blancas.
Águilas Blancas, also known as Politécnico when representing the entirety of National Polytechnic Institute, founded as Águilas Blancas de la ESCA-ESIQIE, is a Mexican college football team based in the Casco de Santo Tomas neighborhood of Mexico City, Mexico. Águilas Blancas participate in the Green Conference as part of the National Student Organization of American Football (ONEFA). It is one of the most successful college football teams in Mexico having won five national championships throughout their history. They maintain a fierce rivalry with teams from the National Autonomous University of Mexico particularly with its Coyoacán based team from Ciudad Universitaria, Pumas Dorados de la UNAM.

Estadio Borregos, also referred to as Estadio Banorte for sponsorship reasons, is a multi-purpose stadium in Monterrey, Mexico. It is the home stadium for the college football team Borregos Salvajes Monterrey of the ONEFA and the professional American football team Fundidores de Monterrey from the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional. The stadium was inaugurated in April 2019 and seats 10,057 spectators.
The 2020 LFA season was the fifth season of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA), the top American football league in Mexico. The regular season began on February 8 and was to conclude on April 26, with the playoffs beginning on May 1 and ending with the Tazón México V on May 17. Nevertheless, after week 5, on March 16, the LFA announced the suspension of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and on 29 March 2020 the league confirmed that the season was cancelled.

The Borregos Salvajes CEM, or simply Borregos CEM, was an American football team representing the State of Mexico campus of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM). The Borregos Salvajes competed in the ONEFA and later in the Conferencia Premier CONADEIP. In 2016, ITESM authorities decided to merge its three Greater Mexico City college football programs into one new team named Borregos Salvajes México, thus, ending the Borregos CEM program.
The Cóndores UNAM, was one of the three American football teams that represented the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) from 1970 to 1997. The Cóndores competed in the ONEFA and won 10 National Championships, including four in a row from 1983 to 1986.
The 2021 ONEFA season was the forty-second season of the Organización Nacional Estudiantil de Fútbol Americano (ONEFA). The season is scheduled began on 22 October 2021. No champion was crowned in the top-tier 14 Grandes Conference while the Lobos UAdeC of the Autonomous University of Coahuila won the second-tier Conferencia Nacional after defeating the Borregos Salvajes Querétaro 13–9 in the final.
Héctor Andrés Zepeda Hernández is a Mexican gridiron football offensive lineman who played college football at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), where he won two national championships. He was selected to participate in the National Football League (NFL)'s International Player Pathway Program (IPPP) in 2022 and 2023. Zepeda was also drafted by the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in the first round of the 2022 CFL Global Draft.
Enrique Gerardo Yenny Romero is a Mexican professional gridiron football kicker for the Reyes de Jalisco of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA). He played college football with ITESM Toluca, winning a national championship in 2017.
Hugo Israel Lira Hernández is a Mexican gridiron football coach and former wide receiver who is the current head coach of the Borregos Salvajes CCM. He played college football with the Aztecas UDLAP before playing in NFL Europe for three seasons with the Frankfurt Galaxy and the Berlin Thunder, winning World Bowl XI with the former. He also participated in the Carolina Panthers training camp in 2005.
Rodrigo Pérez Ojeda is a Mexican gridiron football coach and former quarterback who is the current head coach of the Linces UVM. Nicknamed "Goofy", he played college football with the Aztecas UDLAP, earning back-to-back ONEFA Most Valuable Player awards in 2005 and 2006. He is considered one of the best quarterbacks in Mexican history.
Rafael Duk Delgado is a Mexican gridiron football coach and former player who is the current head coach of the Burros Blancos IPN. He played college football with the Pieles Rojas IPN, winning an ONEFA national championship in 1989. As a head coach, Duk won the 2000 ONEFA national championship with the Borregos Salvajes CEM before leading the Mexicas CDMX to a win in Tazón México III in 2018.
