Associazione Calcio Milan had a poor season in 2000–01, finishing 6th in Serie A with 49 points, and only the scoring touch of Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko saved them from complete humiliation.

Parma Associazione Calcio once again troubled the top teams in both Italy and Europe, but had to settle for just the curtain-raising UEFA Super Cup as silverware in its ambitious ascent towards the top of Italian football. It almost repeated the victory in the 1992–93 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup by reaching another final, but lost out to Arsenal.

In the 1995-96 S.S.C. Napoli season, the club finished in the lower midfield of the table, once again missing out on the international competitions. Goalscoring was at a premium, but the tight defence led by Latin Americans Roberto Ayala and André Cruz, ensured that Napoli did not go close to relegation. Goalkeeper Giuseppe Taglialatela also strengthened his reputation with a solid season.

Parma Associazione Calcio played its sixth consecutive Serie A season, which was the last under legendary coach Nevio Scala, who stepped down at the end of the season. Defensive stalwarts Alberto Di Chiara and Lorenzo Minotti also left the club following the season's conclusion. Despite being only one point behind third-placed Lazio, Parma finished 6th in the standings. In contrast to the previous four seasons, Parma did not win any cups either. Unione Calcio Sampdoria finished ninth in Serie A, despite the absence of club stalwart Roberto Mancini, who had followed coach Sven-Göran Eriksson to Lazio. Former Argentine World Cup-winning coach César Luis Menotti took charge, but failed to match the results of Eriksson, and was replaced by the 1991 championship winning coach Vujadin Boškov, who guided the team to a safe mid-table slot.
