Bowlus is an American luxury travel trailer with a front door, aerodynamic shape [1] and polished aluminum body. [2]

Hawley Bowlus designed and built the travel trailer using his knowledge of aircraft construction. [3] Aspects of the design were used on the first aluminum-body Airstream [4] trailers, the Airstream Clipper. Bowlus stopped producing the trailers in 1936.

Production of a modernized, enlarged travel trailer resumed in 2013 in Oxnard, California. [5]

History

Founding and early years

The first Bowlus was designed and built by Hawley Bowlus in 1934. [6] Bowlus was a designer, aerospace engineer and the builder of the Spirit of St. Louis aircraft. [7] From 1934 to 1936, over eighty Bowlus were built at Bowlus’ family ranch in San Fernando, California.

In 1936, Wally Byam [8] who founded Airstream [9] adapted the design for the Airstream Clipper after selling Bowlus trailers. [10] [11] [12]

In November 1936, Bowlus stopped building travel trailers and did not transfer assets to another party. [13] [ failed verification ]

Approximately half of the original Bowlus travel trailers have survived. [14] In a Scottsdale Gooding & Company auction, a vintage Bowlus Road Chief sold for $187,000. [11]

Modern Era

Bowlus was revived by Geneva Long and her family in 2014. [15] The modern travel trailers are longer, wider and taller than the originals and are lightweight. The new Endless Highways model is described as being the most advanced travel trailer in the world. [16]

The modern-era company is headquartered in Oxnard, California. Each travel trailer is made with birch wood, [17] 2024 T3 aluminum [18] and stainless steel countertops. [1] The company manufactures several versions of the trailer, including the Endless Highways, Endless Highways Performance Edition and the Terra Firma

Technology

The Endless Highway was the first travel trailer to use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. [19] Endless Highways travel trailers can run for up to two weeks without hookups.

Appearances

A Bowlus Road Chief appeared in the 1935 Hollywood movie Red Salute. [20]

In 2016, Bowlus partnered with Bentley [21] for the launch of the Bentley Bentayga during Monterey Car Week.

In 2017, a Bowlus Endless Highways appeared in a Squarespace commercial that was part of a Super Bowl Advertising Campaign with Keanu Reeves. [22]

This body shape dates back to the 1930s and is based on the Bowlus Road Chief, an earlier all-aluminum travel trailer designed and built by Hawley Bowlus, the same designer and engineer who also oversaw the construction of the Spirit of St. Louis.

Wallace Merle "Wally" Byam, (1896-1962) was an American inventor, engineer, developer and entrepreneur most famous as one of the pioneer manufacturers of the travel trailer. He founded the company, Airstream Inc. From the 1930s until his death in 1962, Byam was a leader in developing both a romance and enthusiasm associated with the automobile and recreational vehicle culture, as well as product features as the United States became increasingly focused on highways and automobile travel.

Aluminium–lithium alloys are a set of alloys of aluminium and lithium, often also including copper and zirconium. Since lithium is the least dense elemental metal, these alloys are significantly less dense than aluminium. Commercial Al–Li alloys contain up to 2.45% lithium by mass.

Aluminium–air batteries produce electricity from the reaction of oxygen in the air with aluminium. They have one of the highest energy densities of all batteries, but they are not widely used because of problems with high anode cost and byproduct removal when using traditional electrolytes. This has restricted their use to mainly military applications. However, an electric vehicle with aluminium batteries has the potential for up to eight times the range of a lithium-ion battery with a significantly lower total weight.

The Ford Airstream is a concept car built by Ford that made its debut at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The Ford Airstream is a retro-futuristic crossover utility vehicle that was inspired by the classic Airstream recreational vehicle trailers built since the 1930s. The modern Ford Airstream concept includes a plug-in hybrid hydrogen fuel cell drive system, called HySeries Drive, that operates exclusively on electrical power. Ford calls the Ford Airstream Concept "a futuristic look at crossovers" as "modern touring vehicle(s)" for recreational travelers. The concept vehicle was designed in cooperation with Airstream, a division of Thor Industries. Design and name was possibly influenced by the Ford Aerostar.

William Hawley Bowlus was an American designer, engineer and builder of aircraft and recreational vehicles in the 1930s and 1940s. Today he is most widely known for his creation of the world's first aluminum travel trailer, the Bowlus Road Chief, which Airstream imitated in 1936 to create the Clipper. This followed his prior famed work as the Superintendent of Construction on Charles Lindbergh's aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis. He also designed and constructed the innovative but unsuccessful XCG-16A experimental military glider ordered by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, appearing as XCG-16 in the list of Vincent Burnelli airplanes. In popular culture he is usually referred to as Hawley Bowlus.

The Volkswagen Group MLB platform is the company's platform strategy, announced in 2012, for shared modular construction of its longitudinal, front-engined automobiles.

As a result of these incidents, the United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a study in 2017 to establish whether lithium-ion batteries in plug-electric vehicles pose an exceptional fire hazard. The research looked at whether the high-voltage batteries can cause fires when they are being charged, and when the vehicles are involved in an accident.

Regarding the risk of electrochemical failure, [this] report concludes that the propensity and severity of fires and explosions from the accidental ignition of flammable electrolytic solvents used in Li-ion battery systems are anticipated to be somewhat comparable to or perhaps slightly less than those for gasoline or diesel vehicular fuels. The overall consequences for Li-ion batteries are expected to be less because of the much smaller amounts of flammable solvent released and burning in a catastrophic failure situation.

The 2015 Oxnard train derailment occurred on February 24, 2015, at 5:44 a.m. local time when a Metrolink passenger train collided with a truck that a driver had mistakenly turned from Rice Avenue onto the tracks and became stuck. After impact, the train derailed at Oxnard, California, United States. As a result of the crash, the train engineer died from his injuries a week later and 32 passengers and crew members were injured. The truck driver exited his vehicle and ran from the scene prior to the crash; he sustained minor injuries that were unrelated to the crash sequence.

SangYup Lee is a Korean automobile designer employed by Hyundai Motor Company as its Vice President of Design since June 2016. Prior to Hyundai, Lee worked for General Motors (2000–09) and Volkswagen AG (2010–16), where his notable designs included the Chevrolet Camaro (2010), Bentley Continental GT, and Bentley Flying Spur.
