The 7 Sisters North East International Film Festival which previously called Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) is a film festival hosted in Guwahati, Assam, India annually since the year 2013.
A short film contest [1] [2] is organised as a part of this film festival. This is essentially to promote talent and stories from the region. [3] The winners of this contest not only get recognition but also a chance to win prize money and opportunities to intern with the premier film production houses of the country.
The inaugural edition of the festival was organized in the year 2013 [4] on 11 & 12 January at Anuradha Cineplex, Guwahati. Renowned filmmakers Dibakar banerjee, Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti [5] and Anusha Rizvi graced the festival with their presence. Critically acclaimed Bollywood movies like Shanghai, Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara, Taalash, Peepli live were screened at the festival. A short film contest was also organized along with the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival. Romi Meitei's Kanngkhada Lin was awarded winner of the contest. Dominic Sangma's Karyukai inc. and Tarunabh Dutta's I am Not Crazy were adjusted as 1st and 2nd runner up short films respectively.
The second edition of the festival was held on 19th,20 and 21 April 2014 at Pragjyoti, ITA Machkhowa, Guwahati. Nationally internationally acclaimed film personalities Farhan Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Shoojit Sircar, Rahul Bose and Adil Hussain were special guests of the film festival. Some of the movies screened at the festival in 2014 were Positive, Konikar Ramdhenu, Everybody says I'm Fine, Echoes, Keibu Keioiba, Ka Lad, Madras Cafe, Kaafiron ki Namaaz, Yarwang, and Shorts among others. Steven Ao's Bamboo Shoots won the short film contest, whereas Romi Meitei's Karfew and Tribeny Rai's Rogi Sankhya 666 Ani Aru Haru were adjusted as 1st and 2nd runner up respectively. A lifetime achievement award was also introduced since 2014 to honour and acknowledge works of film personalities from Northeast India for their exceptional contribution to the cinema in Northeast. In 2014, the award was conferred to Shri Aribam Syam Sharma is a celebrated filmmaker from Manipur, India.
The third edition of the festival was organized in the year 2015 on 24, 25 and 26 April at Pragjyoti ITA Centre, Machkhowa, Guwahati. Some of the important renowned film personalities such as Rajkumar Hirani, Kunal Kapoor, Rajkumar Rao, Shimit Amin, Patralekha Paul and Amit Roy participated at the film festival apart from the filmmakers and film enthusiasts from all across Northeast. Khawnglung Run, Riders of the Mists, Crossing Bridges, Ri- Homeland of Uncertainty, Raag and Othelo were some of the highly acclaimed films from the northeast were screened at the festival. Jivitesh Mazumdar's Lotkon was the winner of Brahmaputra Valley Short Film contest 2015. Kamal Paran's Mirrage and Porag Gogoi's A River Island Tale won the 1st and 2nd runner up titles respectively. Renowned and legendary Assamese filmmaker Shri Abdul Majid was Awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2015. [4]
The fourth edition of the festival 2016 was held on 22, 23 and 24 July at Pragjyoti ITA Centre, Guwahati. [6] [7] [8] The three day festival was filled with various events in the presence of the eminent film personalities like Imtiaz Ali, Prakash Jha, [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] Ritesh Shah, Vandana Kataria and Amrit Pritam. Apart from the top 15 films from the short film contest, various films from different states of Northeast India such as Kima's Lode Beyond The Class, Out of the Blue, Eibusu Yaohanbiyu, Tezpur 1962 My Country Land, One Last Question , The Head Hunter, Doronir Nirola Poja were screened as the festival. Yesteryears Assamese actor Smt. Jnanada kakoti was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in this year. [14] The short film contest winner for the year was Romi Meitei from Manipur for his film Colour of Water. Meghalaya's Badeimon Kharshiing & Badeap K. Lyngdoh won the 1st runner up for their film U thlen and Assam's Manas Sagra won the 2nd runner up for his film Little Hearts. [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20]
The Brahmaputra is a trans-boundary river which flows through Tibet, northeast India, and Bangladesh. It is also known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibetan, the Siang/Dihang River in Arunachali, Luit in Assamese, and Jamuna River in Bangla. It is the 9th largest river in the world by discharge, and the 15th longest.
Assam is a state in northeastern India, south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. Assam covers an area of 78,438 km2 (30,285 sq mi). The state is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north; Nagaland and Manipur to the east; Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west via the Siliguri Corridor, a 22 kilometres (14 mi) wide strip of land that connects the state to the rest of India. Assamese and Boro are the official languages of Assam, while Bengali is an additional official language in the Barak Valley.
Northeast India (officially the North Eastern Region(NER)) is the easternmost region of India representing both a geographic and political administrative division of the country. It comprises eight states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura (togetherly known as "Seven Sister States") and one brother state Sikkim.
The Meitei people, also known as the Manipuri people, is the predominant ethnic group of Manipur in Northeast India. They speak Meitei language, one of the 22 official languages of the Indian Republic and the sole official language of Manipur. The Meiteis primarily settled in the Imphal Valley region in modern-day Manipur, though a sizable population has settled in the other Indian states of Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. There is also a notable presence of Meitei in the neighboring countries of Myanmar and Bangladesh. The Meitei ethnic group represents about 53% of Manipur's population.
Guwahati is the biggest city of the Indian state of Assam and also the largest metropolis in northeastern India. Dispur, the capital of Assam, is in the circuit city region located within Guwahati and is the seat of the Government of Assam. A major riverine port city along with hills, and one of the fastest growing cities in India, Guwahati is situated on the south bank of the Brahmaputra. It is called the ''Gateway to North East India''.
Bhupen Hazarika BR was an Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet, actor, filmmaker and politician from Assam, widely known as Sudha Kontho. His songs were written and sung mainly in the Assamese language by himself, are marked by humanity and universal brotherhood and have been translated and sung in many languages, most notably in Bengali and Hindi.
Assamese cinema, also known as Jollywood, is an Indian film industry of Assamese-language motion pictures. It is based in Assam, India. The industry was born in 1935 when Jyoti Prasad Agarwala released his movie Joymoti. Since then the Assamese cinema has developed a slow-paced, sensitive style, especially with the movies of Bhabendra Nath Saikia and Jahnu Barua. The industry is called Jollywood, named for Agarwala's Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio.
Assam is the main and oldest state in the North-East Region of India and as the gateway to the rest of the Seven Sister States. The land of red river and blue hills, Assam comprises three main geographical areas: the Brahmaputra Valley which stretching along the length of the Brahmaputra river, the Barak Valley extending like a tail, and the intervening Karbi Plateau and North Cachar Hills. Assam shares its border with Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and West Bengal; and there are National Highways leading to their capital cities. It also shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh and is very close to Myanmar. In ancient times Assam was known as Pragjyotisha or Pragjyotishpura, and Kamarupa.
Literature from North East India refers to literature in the languages of North East India and the body of work by English-language writers from this region. North East India is an under-represented region in many ways. The troubled political climate, the beautiful landscape and the confluence of various ethnic groups perhaps have given rise to a body of writing that is completely different from Indian English literature. North-East India was a colonial construct and continues to be one by virtue of having a historically difficult relationship with the Indian nation state.
Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Xhipare is a 2012 Assamese language socio-political thriller film, with some dialogue in Hindi, starring Sanjay Suri and Bidita Bag in the lead roles. It was directed by Bidyut Kotoky and produced by National Film Development Corporation of India. The film was simultaneously made in Hindi as As the river flows.
Northeast India consists of the eight states Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. Tourism in this area is based around the unique Himalayan landscape and culture distinct from the rest of India.
The Cinema of Manipur is the film industry based in Manipur, India. It includes not only Meitei language movies but all the films made in different languages of the different communities in Manipur. The Manipuri film industry was born when Matamgi Manipur was released on 9 April 1972. Before this, there were many attempts to make a film in the state, the most significant being Mainu Pemcha in 1948 which was left incomplete due to various problems.
Rewati Chetri is an Indian model and beauty pageant titleholder. She participated in Femina Miss India 2015 where she was a finalist. She has been crowned Miss Asia at the World Miss University 2016 pageant, held in Beijing. In 2016 she participated in the Senorita India pageant, and won the title of Miss International India 2016. She represented India at Miss International 2016 held in Tokyo, Japan
Utpal Borpujari is a double National Film Award winner; one, as a film critic, and the other, as a filmmaker. In 2003, he won the Swarna Kamal for Best Film Critic at the 50th National Film Awards of India. In 2018, he won the National Film Award, and 5 Assam State Film Awards for his debut feature film Ishu
Maj Rati Keteki is a 2017 Indian Assamese drama film written and directed by Santwana Bardoloi. The film stars Adil Hussain in the lead role. Hussain wins National Film Award – Special Mention at 64th National Film Awards for acting in this film.
Gold: The Dream That United Our Nation, or simply Gold, is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language period sports film written and directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. The film stars an ensemble cast of Akshay Kumar, Mouni Roy, Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Kumar Singh, Sunny Kaushal and Nikita Dutta.
Guwahati Theatre Festival is an annual theatre festival held in Guwahati city of Assam state, India. The festival is organized by G Plus, an English-language weekly tabloid newspaper in Guwahati. The festival aims to provide a platform to performing groups to showcase their productions before a new audience in the Guwahati city and North East region.
Romi Meitei is an Indian film director and lyricist who works in Manipuri films. He is a recipient of several awards at several film festivals organised in India and abroad and has directed movies for around two decades. Thoiba Thoibi, Inga Nonglakta, Manithoiba, Natephamda Tero, Chumthang Makhong, Mikithi and Dharmagi Mingda Imagidamak are some of the well-known movies he directed.
Nine Hills One Valley is a 2021 bilingual Manipuri film conceptualized and directed by Haobam Paban Kumar. It is produced by Warepam Jhansirani and Haobam Paban Kumar for Oli Pictures. The movie was among 19 feature films selected for Film Bazaar Recommends (FBR) section of the Film Bazaar 2020. It was premiered at the 16th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival 2021, Indonesia.
