Bratin Sengupta (13 August 1963 in Calcutta,West Bengal) is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was a Member of Parliament,representing West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha as a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). [1] [2] [3] [4]
The Rajya Sabha,constitutionally the Council of States,is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of India. As of 2022,it has a maximum membership of 245,of which 233 are elected by the legislatures of the states and union territories using single transferable votes through open ballots,while the president can appoint 12 members for their contributions to art,literature,science,and social services. The potential seating capacity of the Rajya Sabha is 245,according to article 80 of the Indian Constitution. Members sit for staggered terms lasting six years,with about a third of the 238 designates up for election every two years,in even-numbered years. Unlike the Lok Sabha,the Rajya Sabha is a continuing chamber and hence not subject to dissolution. However,the Rajya Sabha,like the Lok Sabha,can be prorogued by the president.

The All India Trinamool Congress,colloquially the Trinamool Congress is an Indian political party which is predominantly active in West Bengal. The party is led by Mamata Banerjee,the current Chief Minister of West Bengal,who has led the state since 2011. It is currently the third largest party in Parliament with 23 members in Lok Sabha and 13 members in Rajya Sabha and 230 MLAs in State legislative assemblies of India,just after BJP and INC. In 2016 the Election Commission recognised TMC as a national political party.

The mechanism is the single transferable vote (STV) among legislators,meaning nominations may be unopposed contests. The open ballot is used rather than secret ballot,allowing public scrutiny.

He runs an NGO called Grameen Sanchar Society (GRASSO) which started a Mobile PCO scheme in West Bengal with state and BSNL support. Basu got into controversy after bank loans taken by the GRASSO were not repaid.
