Break Point is an Indian documentary series from ZEE5 directed by Nitesh Tiwari and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, produced by Earthsky Pictures. [3] [4] The series is inspired by the successful Indian tennis doubles duo Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes. [5]

Plot

The story follows the professional and personal relationship between former Indian tennis doubles players Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes leading to and following their Wimbledon win in 1999. [6]

Production

Nitesh Tiwari interviews the Indian tennis doubles duo Paes and Bhupathi and their family members. Tiwari also interviews other Indian tennis players and the duo's international partners. Archive footage and short interviews with Sania Mirza and Amitabh Bachchan are used. [7] [8]

ZEE5 released the trailer for Break Point on 17 September 2021 [9] and the series launched on 1 October 2021. [10] [11] The web series was presented at the 52nd International Film Festival of India in November 2021. [12]

Reception

Vivek M V of the Deccan Herald gave the show 4/5 stars, stating that it was a compelling and shocking confession with the determination in their love, indifference, and hatred towards each other makes Break Point bingeworthy. He praises the interviews with the duo's friends and family, but criticises the lack of focus during the Davis Cup. [13]

Subhash K Jha of IWMBuzz.com rated it 3/5. Jha noted that Bhupathi's description of their difficulties were more superficial, but Paes expressed more emotions when recounting their split. [14]

LatestLY rated the documentary 3/5 stars, writing that it is a perfectly balanced love story with a dramatised breakup that was fantastically executed. The reviewers remarked that the pacing mirrors a love story. The site found the series was slightly too dramatic and lacked explanations for some sequences. Overall, they praised it as a remarkable attempt to answer what went awry between Paes and Bhupathi. [15]

Leander Adrian Paes is an Indian former professional tennis player. He is regarded as one of the greatest doubles tennis players of all-time and holds the record for the most doubles wins in the Davis Cup. Paes won eight men's doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. He made a total of 34 Grand Slam finals across men's and mixed doubles in his career which is the joint 2nd highest of all-time among men. He holds a career Grand Slam in men's doubles and mixed doubles making him one of only three men in the Open era to achieve this distinction and won the rare men's/mixed double at the 1999 Wimbledon Championships. Paes was also the 1st pair in Open era history together with Mahesh Bhupathi to reach the men's doubles finals of all 4 Grand Slams in the same calendar year(1999).

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is an Indian filmmaker and writer. After working in advertising for several years, she made her debut by directing the comedy-drama Nil Battey Sannata (2016). The film garnered great reviews and Tiwari went on to direct its Tamil remake entitled Amma Kanakku. She had previously served as the Executive Creative Director at Leo Burnett before she moved on to pursue a filmmaking career. Tiwari won the Filmfare Award for Best Director for the romantic comedy-drama Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017).

Earthsky Pictures, founded in March 2018, is an Indian production company owned by filmmakers and writers, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari.
