International Film Festival of India

The 52nd International Film Festival of India opened on 20 November 2021 with The King of All the World (El Rey de Todo El Mundo) by Carlos Saura in Goa. Like 51st edition this edition was also held in hybrid format, that combined online and face-to-face participation. [1] [2] BRICS Film Festival is being held alongside main festival, in which films from BRICS nations, namely Brazil, Russia, South Africa, China and India are showcased. These five countries are 'country of focus' in the 52nd edition of the festival. [3]

Contents

In 2021 festival, on the occasion of the birth centenary of Satyajit Ray, the Directorate of Film Festivals is paying tribute to him through a 'Special Retrospective' in which his 11 specially curated films are screened. Lifetime Achievement award, in recognition of the auteur’s legacy, has been named as ‘Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award’ from this year. [4] In this edition for the first time, streaming video platforms Netflix, Amazon Prime, Zee5, Voot and Sony Liv are participating in series of physical and virtual events. [5]

The opening ceremony on 20 November 2021, hosted by Karan Johar and Manish Paul was aired live. [6] It was also streamed live on YouTube. [7] [8] The festival closed on 28 November with Asghar Farhadi's film A Hero and the closing ceremony was streamed live on YouTube. [9]

The retrospective section featured Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, Russian filmmaker and stage director Andrei Konchalovsky and Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Rajinikanth.

Creative minds of the future

75 creative minds selected in first round by a selection jury and in final round by a grand jury attended the 52nd International Film Festival. These '75 Creative Minds of Tomorrow' in the age group of 35 years and below interacted with industry stalwarts and attended the masterclasses. [11] [12]

Indian Panorama

In Indian Panorama feature and non-feature films of cinematic, thematic, and aesthetic excellence are selected for the promotion of film art through the non-profit screening of these films under different categories. [14] [26]

Feature films

India's entry for the 2022 Academy Awards, Tamil film Koozhangal, will be screened in the Indian Panorama feature film segment. 24 Feature films reflecting the vibrancy and diversity of the Indian film Industry have been selected out of 221 contemporary films for screening. [27] [28]

S. V. Rajendra Singh Babu is an Indian filmmaker and occasional actor who works primarily in Kannada cinema. He was born and brought up in Mysore. His father Shankar Singh produced many films under the banner Mahatma Pictures (Mysore). Babu has written directed movies of different genres in Kannada and in Hindi that include love stories, war, suspense thrillers and comedy movies. Many of his films have been adapted from novels or short stories. Babu has won numerous awards for his films. His sister is producer and actress Vijayalakshmi Singh, and brother-in-law, actor Jai Jagadish.

The 48th International Film Festival of India was held on 20 to 28 November 2017 in Goa. "Celebrating the Future of Cinema" was set as the festival's theme and registrations were opened in early October 2017.

The 47th International Film Festival of India was held on 20 to 28 November 2016 in Goa. Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor, who was appointed Chairman of the Indian panorama section, and Sameer Arya as the Member head of the panel.

The 46th International Film Festival of India was held on 20 to 30 November 2015 in Goa. The International Jury was headed by the chairperson, Shekhar Kapur along with UK based director, Micheal Radford, Palestinian based Israel director, Ms. Suha Arraf, German Actress, Julia Jentsch and South Korean filmmaker Jeon Kyu-Hwan. The 13-member Feature Jury was headed by Chairperson, Aribam Syam Sharma, while the 7-member Non-Feature jury was led by Chairperson, Rajendra Janglay.

The 42nd International Film Festival of India was held on 23 to 30 November 2011 in Goa. The International competition (Feature) was chaired by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and Short film competition was chaired by Basu Bhattacharya. For the first time the 42d IFFI had launched its own poster with a depiction of fest motif "Peacock", made as a "dancing peacock" by veteran film design and art consultant Thotta Tharani. The IFFI signature film was conceptualized by veteran film maker Shaji Karun. New sections such as “Kaleidoscope”, 3 D, Animation, European discoveries, Master Classes and Russian Classics were included, along with the inaugural Best Director Award. Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan was the chief guest for the festival.

The 41st International Film Festival of India was held from 22 November – 2 December 2010 in Goa. Veteran director Yash Chopra was the chief guest for this edition. The "Cannes Kaleidoscope 2010" was the highlight of the 41st edition. The "Best Actress" and "Best Actor" awards were re-instituted from this edition. The 41st edition paid homage to veteran French filmmaker Eric Rohmer. Six of his feature films were part of the festival. The platinum jubilee of Oriya Cinema was Commemorated and 26 Feature Films were screened. The edition also marked the commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of the Film & Television Institute of India.

Earlier the award was presented on various occasions at the 3rd IFFI for ensemble cast in "Nirjan Saikate", and Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres at 11th IFFI.

The 51st International Film Festival of India was held from 16 to 24 January 2021 in Goa. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the festival went hybrid, there was physical and virtual screening of 50 films out of 224 films across various categories. Bangladesh was country of focus in the festival with four films of the country included in 'country of focus' section.

Makhonmani Mongsaba is an Indian author, actor, producer and director from Imphal, Manipur. He got his doctorate degree in Manipuri from Manipur University. In 2013, he won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his book Chinglon Amadagi Amada, a travelogue. He published the book Matamgi Manipur:The First Manipuri Feature Film by Bobby Wahengbam under the name Angomningthou Preservation and Documentation. It won the Best Book on Cinema at the 65th National Film Awards 2018 and both the writer and the publisher received the Swarna Kamal award.

<i>Ring Wandering</i> 2021 Japanese fantasy drama film

Ring Wandering is a 2021 Japanese fantasy drama film, written and directed by Masakazu Kaneko. Starring Sho Kasamatsu, Junko Abe, Reiko Kataoka and Ken Yasuda, the film revolves around a young manga artist who is planning to write a manga about Japanese wolves. It had its premiere at 37th Warsaw Film Festival on October 8, 2021, now it was theatrically released in Japan on 19 February 2022. The film won Golden Peacock at the 52nd International Film Festival of India in November 2021.

The 53rd International Film Festival of India was an event held from 20 to 28 November 2022 with Alma & Oskar by Dieter Berner as the opening feature film, and Perfect Number by Krzysztof Zanussi as the closing feature film. France was the country of focus in the festival with eight films of the country included in the 'country of focus' section.

The IFFI Special Jury Award and Special Mention are the two honors presented annually at the International Film Festival of India for excellency in Film Art in World cinema. It was first presented during the 4th IFFI 1969. The award was later re-instated since 29th IFFI 1998. On the occasion of 100 years of Indian cinema, Centenary Awards were conferred during 2012, 2013, and 2014. The Special Mention being awarded since the 46th IFFI 2015.

<i>No Ground Beneath the Feet</i> 2021 Bangladeshi drama film

No Ground Beneath the Feet is a 2021 Bangladeshi drama film directed by Mohammad Rabby Mridha with a screenplay by Mohammad Rabby Mridha and Nahar Mridha from a story by Fazla Rabby. Starring Mostafa Monwar, the film depicts the life of Saiful, an impoverished ambulance driver in Dhaka. The film premiered at the 26th Busan International Film Festival in 'out of competition section' on 7 October 2021, and competed for Golden Peacock Award at the 52nd International Film Festival of India in November 2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">54th International Film Festival of India</span> 2023 Indian film festival

The 54th International Film Festival of India opened on 20 November 2023 with Catching Dust by Stuart Gatt in Goa. Shekhar Kapur an Indian filmmaker served as chairperson of the international jury. This year a new award category Best Web Series Award was introduced in the festival. 32 entries in 10 languages from 15 Over-the-top media service platforms were selected to compete for this award.
