Resul Pookutty (born 30 May 1971) [2] is an Indian film sound designer, sound editor and audio mixer. [3] [4] He won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing, along with Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp, for Slumdog Millionaire . [5] Pookutty has worked in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, [6] [7] Marathi [8] and Malayalam languages in addition to British films. And now he is a member of the Executive committee of Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (Oscar Committee), Motion Picture Sound Editors Guild (MPSE) and CAS (Cinema Audio Society) of America. Recently Mr. Pookutty was awarded the title Distinguished Engineer by Rocheston, New York. (Distinguished Engineer is an honor awarded to Engineers of repute, selected from across the world in recognition of caliber, technical excellence and accomplishments that are an inspiration to people. [9] In 2010, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to cinema. [9] [10] In the same year, he was also conferred an honorary Doctorate by the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, located in Kerala, India.

Early life

Born into a family in Vilakkupara, near Anchal about 40 km from Kollam, Kerala, India. He was the youngest of eight children. His father was a private bus ticket checker. Pookutty had to walk 6 km to the nearest school and study in the light of a kerosene lamp as his village had no electricity. [11] [12]

He did his bachelor's degree in physics from Milad-E-Sherief Memorial College, Kayamkulam during 1987–1990. [13] He joined Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram for studying Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, however, he was unable to complete it. In 1995, he graduated from Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. He wrote the remaining LLB exam papers and enrolled as an advocate in 2012. Pookutty said that it was his father's desire to make him an advocate. [14]

Career

Pookutty moved to Mumbai after his graduation. He termed it as "a natural immigration as a graduate of the institute." He pointed out that "Ninety-five per cent of the technicians of the Mumbai film industry are alumni of FTII, Pune." [4] Pookutty made his debut in sound design with the 1997 film Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One, directed by Rajat Kapoor. He got his big break with the critically acclaimed 2005 film Black, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He subsequently engineered sound for major productions like Musafir (2004), Zinda (2006), Traffic Signal (2007), Gandhi, My Father (2007), Saawariya (2007), Dus Kahaniyaan, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2009) and Enthiran (2010). Pookutty is married to Shadia. They have two children. [15]

Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja is a 2009 Indian Malayalam-language epic period drama film based on the life of Pazhassi Raja, a king who fought against the East India Company in the 18th century. The film was directed by Hariharan, written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair and produced by Gokulam Gopalan. It stars Mammootty in lead role with an ensemble supporting cast. The music score and soundtrack were created by Ilaiyaraaja, while its sound design is by Resul Pookutty.

Richard Pryke is a British sound engineer. He won an Academy Award for Best Sound for the film Slumdog Millionaire. He has worked on over 80 films since 1993.

<i>Shutter</i> (2012 film) 2012 Indian film

Shutter is a 2012 Indian Malayalam thriller film written and directed by theater actor and playwright Joy Mathew in his directorial debut. The film set and filmed in Kozhikode, stars Lal, Sreenivasan, Vinay Forrt, Sajitha Madathil and Riya Saira. Renganaath Ravee does the sound design, and Hari Nair is the cinematographer. Vishnu Govind is an Indian re-recording mixer, sound designer and sound editor. He has worked in over 150 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. He won the National Film Award for Best Audiography(Re-recordist of the final mixed track) for the Malayalam film Malik (2020). Govind is also a recipient of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Sound Design along with Sree Sankar, for the films Unda (2018) and Ishq (2019).

Lukka Chuppi is a 2015 Indian Malayalam-language drama film co-produced and directed by Bash Mohammed and written by Gafoor Arackkal from a story by Mohammed. The film features an ensemble cast led by Jayasurya, Murali Gopy, Joju George, Ramya Nambeeshan, Chinnu Kuruvila, Muthumani, Dinesh Prabhakar, and Asmita Sood. Pathemari (transl. Dhow) is a 2015 Indian Malayalam-language period drama film written and directed by Salim Ahamed and starring Mammootty in the lead role, with a supporting cast that includes Jewel Mary, Siddique, Sreenivasan, Salim Kumar, Shaheen Siddique, Viji Chandrasekhar, and Joy Mathew. The plot follows the life of Pallikkal Narayanan (Mammootty) who migrated to the Middle-East in the early 1960s when the Kerala Gulf boom was just beginning.

<i>The Sound Story</i> 2019 Indian film

The Sound Story is a 2019 Indian Malayalam-language film written and directed by Prasad Prabhakar, starring sound designer Resul Pookutty in the lead role, marking his acting debut. The films narrates the story of a sound designer who strives hard to realize his dream of recording all the sounds of the Thrissur Pooram. The film was released on 5 April 2019. The film also contains Tamil, English and Urdu dialogues/lyrics. The film was dubbed and released in Hindi under the same title and in Tamil as Oru Kadhai Sollattuma.

Sanal George is an Indian sound designer and production sound mixer who is based in Mumbai. He is the recipient of the 65th National Film Award of India for Best Sound Design for the feature film Walking with the Wind. He was also awarded the Asian Film Academy fellowship in 2013 as part of the Busan International Film Festival, Busan, South Korea. Sanal was awarded the Kerala State Television Award 2016 for the Malayalam short film Chaver.
