Kailash Kher (born 7 July 1973) is an Indian playback singer, live performer, and composer. His music draws on Indian folk and Sufi traditions, blended with pop rock and spiritual influences. His musical influences include Kumar Gandharva, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Bhimsen Joshi, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. [1]
Kher received the Padma Shri in 2017 from the Government of India. [2] He has also received two Filmfare Awards: Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer (Hindi) for Fanaa (2006), and Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer – Telugu for Mirchi (2013). [3] Since 2014, he has been involved in promoting Indian folk culture through initiatives such as the Kailash Kher Academy for Learning Arts (KKALA) and the reality series Bharat Ka Amrit Kalash, which highlights traditional music from India’s states and union territories. [4]
Kher was born on 7 July 1973 in Mayur Vihar, New Delhi, to a Kashmiri family. [5] [6] His father, Mehar Singh Kher, was a traditional folk singer. [7]
Kher’s interest in music began in his childhood. [8] At the age of 14, he left his home in search of a guru or an institution to pursue musical training and began studying classical and folk music. He later recalled: “I left because I wanted to pursue my passion for music. It required me to stay in isolation.” [9]
To support himself, he taught students for a rate of ₹150 (~$1.7) per session, covering lodging, food, and education and music expenses. [10] Unable to find a suitable guru or school, Kher continued learning by listening to the likes of Gokulotsavji Maharaj, Kumar Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi, and later Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Lata Mangeshkar. [11]
He then worked in a family friend’s Indian handicraft export business until 1999. [12] After the business collapsed, he became depressed and attempted suicide in early 1999. He subsequently spent six months in Singapore and Thailand. [13]
After returning to New Delhi with his family, he graduated from Delhi University via a correspondence programme. [14] [15]
In 2001, Kher left Delhi for Mumbai – the centre of India’s highly competitive music industry – aiming to become a professional singer. He lived in cheap hostels and took on whatever music-related work he could find to make his ends meet. [16]
He moved to Mumbai in 2001, where he began working in the advertising music industry. [17]
Soon after arriving in Mumbai, friends in the film industry recommended him to Ram Sampath, who was seeking a new voice for a Nakshatra diamonds jingle; Kher later recalled that the work did not bring instant recognition but paid him ₹5,000 (~$57), which helped him “just to survive.” [18]
He went on to record jingles for television and radio commercials; it was then he started getting noticed for his distinctive singing style, and ended up working for Coca-Cola, Citibank, Pepsi, the IPL and Honda Motorcycles. [19]
Kher faced early struggles breaking into Bollywood and first drew attention with “Rabba Ishq Na Hove” from Andaaz (2003). [20] [21] “Allah Ke Bande” from Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II (2003) further boosted his popularity. [22]
He sang multiple tracks in Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005), in which he also had a cameo appearance, and recorded “O Sikander” for Corporate (2006). [23] With his band Kailasa, the album track “Teri Deewani” became a breakout hit, and “Ya Rabba” from Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love (2007) was widely popular. [24] He later recorded “Jay‑Jaykara” and “Jal Rahi Hai Chita” for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). [25]
Kher's voice has been described as raw, soulful, fresh, high-pitched, and sharp.[ citation needed ] He mainly sings Ghazal, Sufi, Qawwali, folk, and other devotional songs. He has been greatly influenced by the classical singers including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Lata Mangeshkar, Kumar Gandharva, Bal Gandharva, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, and Bhimsen Joshi.
