Manu Parekh is an Indian painter, known for his several paintings on the city of Varanasi. Reported to be influenced by Rabindranath Tagore and Ram Kinker Baij, Parekh is a recipient of the 1982 Lalit Kala Akademi Award. [1] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, in 1991. [2]
Parekh was born in 1939 in Ahmedabad, in the Indian state of Gujarat [1] and graduated in Arts from the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art, Mumbai in 1962 [3] where he had the opportunity to train under Mukund Shroff. [4] Later he also had a short stint at the National School of Drama. [5] Starting his career in the theatre, he worked as an actor and stage designer for one year and joined Weavers' Service Centre, Mumbai of Pupul Jayakar as art designer in 1963 where he stayed for two years. He shifted his base to Kolkata in 1965 and, in 1974, moved to New Delhi, joining Handicrafts and Handlooms Export Corporation of India as a Design Consultant. He left the corporation later to pursue his career as a freelance artist. [4]
Parekh has had several group exhibitions and the Modern Painting exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art in 1982, Hirschhom Muse exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC the same year and the travelling exhibition, Seven Artists are some of the notable ones. [6] Apart from the solo shows at Bose Pacia Modern in New York and at ARKS Gallery in London, Small Drawings at Sophia Duchesne Art Gallery, Mumbai in 1991, Ritual Oblations at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi in 1999, Portraits of Flower and Landscapes of River at Jehangir Art Gallery and Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2003, Banaras at Vadehra Art Gallery, in 2004 and Banaras – Eternity Watches Time at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2007 were the notable among his solo exhibitions. [1] He has participated in two Triennales in India in 1975 and 1978 and HelpAge India has utilised his works for mobilising funds by presenting them at auctions at Sotheby's, Bombay in 1989 and Andasprey (U.K.) in 1991. Parekh has served as the Exhibition Commissioner for Madhubani Painting show in Italy and Denmark and Contemporary Indian Painting at the Festival of India at Stockholm in 1987. [7] After the Birla Academy of Art and Culture award of 1971, he received the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS) award and the Silver Plaque of the President of India in 1972. [8] AIFACS award came his way once more in 1974 and in 1982, he received the National Art Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi. [4] Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Calcutta honoured him again in 1991 [8] and the Government of India included him in the Republic Day Honours list, the same year, for the civilian honour of the Padma Shri. Parekh is married to well known contemporary artist Madhvi. The couple has been living in New Delhi ever since1974. [4]
Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh is a painter, poet and art critic from Gujarat, India. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1983 and Padmabhushan in 2014 for his contribution in field of art.
Sayed Haider Raza was an Indian painter who lived and worked in France for most of his career. Born on 22 February 1922 in Kakkaiya, Central Provinces, British India, Raza moved to France in 1950, marrying the French artist Janine Mongillat in 1959. Following her death from cancer in 2002, Raza returned to India in 2010, where he would live until his death on 28 July 2016.

Ratnadeep Gopal Adivrerkar is a contemporary artist from India. He has had several important solo exhibitions including one at NUS Museum, Singapore, Galerie Sylvia Bernhardt, Germany and Pavillon du Centanarie/Arcelor Mittal, Luxembourg. In 2013, Ratnadeep exhibited at the prestigious Deutsche Oper Berlin a series of works titled 'The Golden Ear- A Tribute to Wagner', based on German Composer Richard Wagner and mainly his epic opera "Der Ring des Nibelungen". The work revolves around Ratnadeep's philosophical interpretation with connection to especially to Indo-Global mythological context with contemporary times. He has received a number of awards and scholarships. Ratnadeep lives and works in Mumbai, India and Berlin, Germany.
Akbar Padamsee was an Indian artist and painter, considered one of the pioneers in modern Indian painting along with S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza and M.F. Husain. Over the years he also worked with various mediums from oil painting, plastic emulsion, water colour, sculpture, printmaking, to computer graphics, and photography. In addition, he worked as a film maker, sculptor, photographer, engraver, and lithographer. Today his paintings are among the most valued by modern Indian artists. His painting Reclining Nude was sold for US$1,426,500 at Sotheby's in New York on 25 March 2011.
Prayag Jha Chillar, also known as Prayag Jha, is a contemporary Indian artist, who specialized in etching. Her works are kept in collections all over India, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in the capital, Delhi. Jha's work was showcased in solo exhibitions from 1971 to 2012 across Jehangir Art Gallery, Taj Art Gallery, Bajaj Art Gallery, and Art Heritage New Delhi. Vinayak Pandurang Karmarkar (1891–1967), popularly known as Nanasaheb Karmarkar was an Indian artist, famous for his sculptures. He is best known for his statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Karmarkar Museum of Sculpture has been set up at his house in Sasawane village near Alibag. Located 18 kms from on Alibaug-Rewas Road, Maharashtra, India, is a museum where sculptors made by Late Mr. Nanasaheb Karmarkar are displayed in his own bungalow. There about 150 beautifully carved sculptures displayed here.
Biman Bihari Das is an Indian sculptor and former Principal of the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the field of Fine Arts.
Gurcharan Singh is an Indian painter, known for his figurative paintings. He was born in 1949 at Patiala, in the Indian state of Punjab and studied at Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chandigarh. He has had several and group exhibitions in India and abroad and his works were exhibited at the International Biennale in Tokyo in 1984, at the Contemporary Art Show in Seoul in 1986 and the Festival of Contemporary Art in London in 1988. The Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and India House, Paris have his on display at their premises. His signature paintings are based on the people from financially compromised classes; The Red Light in Black and White and Les Miserables are two of his notable works.
Ranbir Singh Bisht (1928–1998) was an Indian painter and the Principal of the College of Fine Arts, Lucknow University. Born in 1928 at Landsdowne in Garhwal, in the present day Indian state of Uttarakhand, he secured Drawing Teacher's Training Certificate and Diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art and Craft, Lucknow. He conducted many solo shows in a number of Indian cities besides a show in New York and participated in group shows in Frankfurt and Tokyo. He was also a participant of the 4th Triennale at New Delhi in 1972.
Biren De (1926–2011) was an Indian painter of modern art, known for his paintings with tantric influences. His paintings were characterized by symmetrical patterns of geometry and the presence of tantric symbols such as mandala, phallus and vagina, reportedly representing masculine and feminine energies of the universe. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 1992.
