Govindan Vijayaraghavan is a cardiologist from India, credited with establishing the first 2D Echocardiography laboratory in India. He is the vice-chairman and Founder Director of the Kimshealthcare Trivandrum and the President of the Society for Continuing Medical Education and Research, Trivandrum, Kerala. He was honoured by Government of India in 2009 for his services in the field of medical sciences by awarding him Padmashri. [1] He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Indian Academy of Echocardiography, Indian College of Cardiology, and Cardiological Society of India.
Vijayaraghavan was born at Perumpuzha, Kollam, Kerala on 18 September 1942 as the son of Sahithya Siromany M. K. Govindan, a Sanskrit scholar. He did his early schooling in Trivandrum Model School and graduated in Medicine from Trivandrum Medical College in 1964 and passed MD in General Medicine in 1969. He continued his studies at Christian Medical College, Vellore, obtained his Doctorate in Cardiology (DM) in 1973 and started his career there as associate professor. [2] He moved back to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1976 and continued his research on Endomyocardial Fibrosis, a variety of heart disease found common in Kerala, in association with Post-graduate Medical School and Brompton Hospital, London.
Vijayaraghavan's research findings on endomyocardial fibrosis are widely considered to be path breaking. His research on Cerebra Odollum poisoning (a suicidal plant poison used by poor people of South India) helped to introduce innovative treatment modalities, which is reported to be still in use. In 1983 he was invited to work at the University of California, Los Angeles, and became one of the pioneer research workers in Doppler echocardiography and co-authored the first book on this subject from USA (1985).
Vijayaraghavan is a well-known teacher in cardiology in India and abroad. His effort in the 1980s in conducting continuing medical education programme all over India resulted in establishment of 2-D echocardiography as the most popular cardiology investigation in this country. As Professor and Head of Cardiology, Vijayaraghavan established one of the most modern cardiology departments in this country at the Trivandrum Medical College. With help from the World Health Organization and Government of India he demonstrated that heart attacks and its risk factors are very highly prevalent among the poor people of Kerala. He was the current editor-in-chief of the Indian Journal of Clinical Cardiology (IJCC) [3]
He received honorary fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP London), from the American College of Cardiology, the Premier Golden Heart Fellowship the American Heart Association, the Indian College of Cardiology, Indian Academy of Echocardiography, International Medical Sciences Academy and the Cardiological Society of India. He was elected as the chief patron of Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists during the annual scientific session IACCCON 2010 at Thiruvananthapuram. [4] [5]
He is a member of the editorial board of the Indian editions of Circulation and Hypertension and is the Chairman of the Echocardiology Council of the Cardiological Society of India. He is also a University Guide for PhD in Cardiology, Kerala University from 1984. [6]
Vijayaraghavan has published papers, articles and journals in India and abroad and has review articles and abstracts to his credit. [7]

M. Krishnan Nair was an Indian oncologist. He was the founding director of the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, a director of the S.U.T. Institute of Oncology, and Trivandrum Cancer Center(TCC), part of SUT Royal Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and a professor at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research in Kochi. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2001 for his contributions in the cancer care field.

Tejas M. Patel is a cardiologist from Ahmedabad, India and chairman and chief interventional cardiologist at Apex Heart Institute, Ahmedabad. Patel, who has received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award, was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest Indian civilian award. In 2024, he was further recognized with the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, for his outstanding contributions to cardiology.
Susil Chandra Munshi is an Indian interventional cardiologist and the Director of the department of Cardiac Research and Education at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Indian College of Cardiology, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Indian College of Physicians, Cardiological Society of India and the Indian Society of Electrocardiology. He served as the president of the Cardiological Society of India from 1989 to 1990, a member of its panel of national advisors and national faculty and is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the society in 2012. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, in 1991.
Gurumukh Sajanmal Sainani is an Indian general physician, medical researcher, medical writer and an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Ashwin Balachand Mehta is an Indian cardiologist and one of the pioneers of interventional cardiology in India. He is the director of Cardiology department at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai and also serves Breach Candy Hospital, as a consultant. He is reported to have performed the first Cardiac catheterization and Angiography in newborn babies in India, in 1973, the year when he introduced Bundle Electrography in the country. Upendra Kaul is an Indian cardiologist and one of the pioneers of interventional cardiology in India. He is the Chairman and Dean Academics and Research at the Batra Hospital and Medical Research Center. He is known for his expertise in procedures such as Percutaneous Cardiopulmonary bypass, Rotational and Directional Atherectomy, Coronary stenting and Percutaneous Laser Myocardial Revascularization. He graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the Maulana Azad Medical College and continued his studies at the same institution to secure MD in 1975 and, DM in cardiology in 1978. Later, he obtained advanced training in interventional cardiology from Australia during 1983 to 84. He has served the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as a professor of cardiology and has been a member of the faculty of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, G. B. Pant Hospital, Batra Hospital and Fortis Health Care, NCR. and Executive Director and Dean at Fortis Health Care, New Delhi.

Kewal Kishan Talwar is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic and writer, and a former chairman of the Medical Council of India. He is a former director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and is reported to have performed the first implantation of Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in South Asia. He is also credited with the introduction of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in India. He is a recipient of several honours including B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2006, for his contributions to medicine. Suvro Banerjee is a consultant interventional cardiologist, practicing in Kolkata. He has worked at various hospitals in the United Kingdom, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London as well as Edinburgh. His procedural skills, among others, include coronary and peripheral angioplasty, pacemaker, ICD and CRT implantation. He is the first doctor in Kolkata to successfully use the ICD which is the Implantable Carvioverter Defibrillatorto to treat a patient's abnormal heart rhythm.
Sujoy Bhushan Roy was an Indian cardiologist and the founder Head of the department of the Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. He was the president of the Cardiological Society of India in 1972. He was known for medical research in cardiology and was reported to have coined the name, Juvenile Rheumatic Stenosis. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medical science.
Daljeet Singh Gambhir is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic, researcher and inventor and the Group Director of Cardiology at Kailash Group of Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. He is the inventor of Infinnium Paclitaxel-Eluting Stent, a reportedly cheaper drug-eluting stent which he first presented at the EuroPCR meeting held in Paris in 2003. A fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and an honorary fellow of the Indian College of Cardiology, he is reported to have performed over 10,000 coronary interventions. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medicine.

The IACC, a non-profit organisation for non invasive cardiologists, was founded in 2008 by Dr. Rajesh Rajan, 4 Padma Shri doctors, Mohammed Shafiq and five other colleagues from Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences. Based in Kerala, this association works towards the prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) and the reduction of cardiovascular mortality in rural India.
Ayodele Olajide Falase is a Nigerian cardiologist and academic. He is a former vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan. He served as a WHO Expert committee member on cardiopathies and on a WHO expert panel on cardiovascular disease. Professor Ayodele Falase got the Honorary fellowship award at the University of Ibadan 71st founder’s day held in 2019.
Partho P. Sengupta is an Indian-American cardiologist. He is the Henry Rutgers Professor of Cardiology and Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease & Hypertension at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) and the Chief of Cardiology, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) since July 1, 2021. Between 2019 and 2021, Dr. Sengupta was the Abnash C. Jain Chair & Professor of Cardiology at West Virginia University School of Medicine and the Chief of Division of Cardiology, Chair of Cardiovascular Innovation and Director of Cardiac Imaging at West Virginia University Heart and Vascular Institute.
