Harsh Kumar is ophthalmologist, [1] who is reported to have described nine laser surgical procedures for glaucoma and anterior segment of which one procedure is cited by Shields Text Book of Glaucoma, [2] a known reference book on glaucoma management. [3] He is the director of Glaucoma Services at Centre for Sight, New Delhi [4] and also serves at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi. [5] He was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. [6]

Biography

Harsh Kumar graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, secured his master's degree (MD) in ophthalmology from Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, both with gold medals [5] and did senior residency at R. P. Centre to pass out with the best senior resident award. [3] He joined his alma mater as a member of faculty and served the institution as an additional professor of the glaucoma unit. [3] [5] He works at Centre for Sight, Delhi as the director of Glaucoma unit [3] and at the Apollo Hospital, Indraprastha, as a consultant surgeon. [7]

Kumar is a former president of the Glaucoma Society of India. [3] [5] He is known to have done extensive research on glaucoma and has published three books and 66 papers, besides contributing chapters to several textbooks on the subject. [3] [5] He is reported to have described nine laser surgical procedures for glaucoma and one of the procedures has been included in the Shields Text Book of Glaucoma, [3] a widely referred reference book on the disease. He is also involved in continuous medical education by conducting classes and workshops on the subject [8] [9] [10] and has mentored twenty five students in their doctoral researches. [3]

Kumar, a recipient of ICMR fellowship, has received several awards such as Bodh Raj Sabharwal Medal (1985), A. C. Aggarwal Trophy (1988), P. N. Taneja Award (1994), D. B. Chandra oration Award (2007), Pratap Narain Memorial Lecture Award (2008) and A. N. Pandeya Oration Award (2010). [3] The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2015. Bhalla was awarded the Padma Shri in 2010 for his contribution to the medical field science. The Padma Shri award is the fourth highest civilian honor in Republic of India. Dr. Bhalla also has served as a secretary of The Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India (PDSI) and he still holds the position of Chairperson of Industrial Liaison committee.

Noshir Minoo Shroff is an Indian ophthalmologist, known as a pioneer of intraocular lens implantation surgery in India and a medical director of the Shroff Eye Centre. The Government of India honoured him in 2010, with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his services in the field of medicine.

Narendra Kumar Pandey is an Indian surgeon, hospital administrator, and founder of the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, known for his expertise in Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). He was honoured by the Government of India in 2014, and was bestowed the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of medicine.

Pramod Kumar Julka, is an Indian cancer specialist (oncologist), medical educationist and writer, known for performing the first peripheral blood stem cell transplant following high dose chemotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer in India. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has awarded him by bestowing on him the honorary membership.

Ganesh Kumar Mani is an Indian cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, reported to have performed over 20,500 Coronary artery bypass surgeries. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education.

Vijay Kumar Dada is an Indian ophthalmologist and a consultant at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. An alumnus and a former chief of the Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he has written several articles on eye diseases such as cataract and glaucoma. Dada, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Mahipal S. Sachdev is an Indian ophthalmologist and the Chairman of Centre for Sight, a chain of Eye Hospitals in India. He is known as one of the pioneers of Phacoemulsification procedure in India. He is the co-author of A Practical Guide to Phacoemulsification, the first Indian book on the topic. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine. He is the Chairman Scientific Committee of the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India, IIRSI.

Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the Chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of URobotic surgeries in India. He is a former head of department of Urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Arvind Lal is an Indian billionaire, pathologist, medical administrator and the chairman and managing director of Dr Lal PathLabs, a medical diagnostic centre in Delhi. A medical graduate and a medical academic, he is reported to have modernized Indian medical diagnostics and initiated the first Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the field of laboratory testing in India. He holds the rank of a Brigadier in the Indian Armed Forces, an honorary rank conferred by the Army. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Medicine.

Yash Gulati is an Indian orthopedic surgeon and the senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He specializes in joint replacement and spine surgeries and is a visiting consultant at RAK Hospital, Ras al-Khaimah. He is the youngest orthopedic surgeon to win the civilian honour of the Padma Shri.

Dinesh K. Bhargava is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. He is one of the pioneers of gastrointestinal endoscopy in India for which the Medical Council of India awarded him Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, in 1989. He is also a recipient of the civilian honor of the Padma Shri.

Anil Kumar Mandal is an Indian ophthalmologist and a consultant at L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Known for his research on glaucoma, Mandal is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 2003.
