Vaidya Balendu Prakash is an Indian Ayurveda practitioner. [1] He is a former physician to the President of India and the founder of Paadav, a specialty Ayurvedic hospital in Dehradun. [2] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 1999. [3]


Biography

Balendu Prakash was born on 14 March 1959, at Meerut, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, to Vaidya Chandra Prakash, an Ayurveda practitioner. [2] He did his early schooling at Meerut and graduated in Science with Honours (BSc Hons.) after which he secured the Ayurvedic Medicine degree of BAMS (Ayurvedacharya) from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak. It is reported that he learnt Rasa Shastra, a traditional Indian therapeutic protocol, where metal, in powder and paste forms, are used alongside herbs, for the treatment, from his father. [4] In 1989, he moved his base to Dehradun and founded Vaidya Chandra Prakash Cancer Research Foundation (SIROs) for ayurvedic research. [2]

His treatment protocols have been subjected to studies in International Journal of Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies in 2014. [5] He has published several articles in alternative medicine research journals about his findings, covering the treatment of cancer [6] [7] and other diseases. [8] [9] In 2000, when he set up a research unit at the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, he found it difficult to get patient referrals from medical doctors of the Centre. [10] It is also reported that a team of British medical doctors scrutinised Prakash's treatment and his patients in 1990, only to report negatively about the therapeutic efficacy of the treatment. [4]

Prakash is a former member of the scientific advisory committee of Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS) and served as the Honorary Physician to the President of India from 1997 to 2000. [11] He has sat in the Central Council of Indian Medicine and headed the Clinical Research Units of Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram and Shri Dhanvantri Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Chandigarh during the late 1990s and early 2000s. [2] He is a member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Herbal Research Development Institute, Gopeshwar ( a Government of Uttarakhand undertaking) and the Advisory Committee of the National Cancer Control Programme of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He is also a member of the Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani Drugs Technical Advisory Board of the Ministry of AYUSH and International Headache Society, UK and a life member of the Indian Co-operative Oncology Network (ICON). [11]

Prakash is a recipient of several awards and honours such as Uttrakhand Gaurav, Doon Ratan, Ayurveda Chandrodaya, Paranacharya, Vaidya Ratanam, National Citizen Award and Pride of Doon. [11] The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 1999. [3]

The Government of India, in 2012, honoured him with Padma Shri for his services to the cause of Ayurveda.

S. K. M. Maeilanandhan, is an Indian industrialist and founder of S. K. M. Group of companies. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of social service.

Krishna Chandra Chunekar was an Indian ayurvedic practitioner and writer, known for the books he published, especially the translation of Vedic literature on herbal pharmacopeia. The Government of India awarded him, in 2013, the Padma Shri in medicine, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions.

Devendra Triguna is an Indian Ayurveda practitioner, known for his expertise in Pulse diagnosis. He is a former honorary physician to the President of India and the incumbent president of the Association of Manufacturers of Ayurvedic Medicine (AMAM) and the All India Ayurvedic Congress (AIAC). The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 1999, and followed it up, a decade later, with the third-highest honour of the Padma Bhushan in 2009.

Paneenazhikath Narayana Vasudeva Kurup was an Indian Ayurvedic practitioner, researcher, writer and the founder director of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRIMH). He is a former vice chancellor of the Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar and a former advisor of the Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He has published several articles and a book, A Handbook on Indian Medicinal Plants, on the traditional Indian medicine system, The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2005, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

P. R. Krishna Kumar was an Indian Ayurveda expert and managing director of The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Ltd. He founded the AVP Research Foundation, a non-profit organisation promoting research in the Ayurveda. He was the chancellor of the Avinashilingam University, and the chairman of CARe Keralam, a resource centre involved in efforts to standardise Ayurvedic medicines. The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Ayurveda.

Ram Harsh Singh is an Indian practitioner of the Ayurveda system of alternative medicine and the founder vice chancellor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Rajasthan Ayurved University. An Emeritus Professor of Banaras Hindu University and a National Professor of the Ministry of AYUSH of the Government of India, he was conferred with the fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri, in 2016.

M.D.(Doctor of Medicine in Ayurveda) or Ayurveda Vachaspati is the three-year master's course in the Indian medical system of Ayurveda. MD/MS (Ayurveda) is offered in many medical colleges in India and Sri Lanka. The selection to the MD/MS (Ayurveda) course is generally done by a competitive National level written entrance examination which is called AIAPGET - All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test, which is open to candidates with BAMS.
