Narendra Kumar Pandey was born on 1 January 1951, in the remote village of Bishnupura, in Saran district of Bihar, India. [5] He was the eldest of three children born to Jagat Pandey, a village head master, and Vidya Pandey. [2] For his early education, he studied in the local village school where one of his uncles was a teacher. However, he had to complete his school education at different locations when his father joined the central government service and was posted at various locations across northern India. Pandey chose a medical career, inspired by one of his uncles who was a medical practitioner, and joined Patna Medical College where he acquired his medical degree of MBBS, in 1974, and completed his residency there. Pandey started his career at the Danapore Block Hospital, a suburb near Patna city, and continued there for one year.[ citation needed ] While working at the Block hospital, he married Padma, a student of Patna Science College, in 1975. Disillusioned with the work at Block hospital, which consisted of mainly vasectomies, Pandey moved to London in 1976, where he got an opportunity to study further in the city. The move to London opened up new avenues for Pandey and he redid his internship at the Ashford Hospital, London, in surgery, and at the Aberystwyth District General Hospital and North Devon District Hospital, in orthopedics. [1] He also worked at the District Hospital, in Barnstable. He did his FACS at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, in 1982, and continued in the UK, working at various hospitals like Hammersmith Hospital, Kings College, Charing Cross Hospital, and Middle Sex Hospital. His stay in UK also gave him opportunities to work and study under many renowned surgeons like Sir Alfred Patrick M. Forrest, Professor Mansel, Professor Blumgart and Professor Russell, and gain experience in liver and pancreatic surgery and minimal access surgery. [2]

Pandey returned to India in 1984 and joined Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, in the capacity of a consultant and worked there till 2007 when he moved out as the executive director of the Hospital. He also served as a director board member of the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Delhi, during that time. [2] By this time, his mind was set on building a medical centre of his own and he founded the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences in 2010.

Narendra Kumar Pandey lives in Faridabad with the families of his four children, Anupam, Neha, Prashant, and Smriti, and together they look after the running of the hospital. [2]

Achievements and legacy

Besides his services as one of the leading thoracic surgeons in India, Pandey is credited with pioneering work in Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. [6] He has also conducted various seminars, workshops and training programmes in general surgery. [2] However, the legacy Pandey has left is the medical institution he has founded, Asian Institute of Medical Sciences. [7]

Asian Institute of Medical Sciences

Narendra Kumar Pandey founded the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences on 1 February 2010. [6] [8] The institute is a super specialty tertiary care medical institution, in Faridabad. [9] and is reported to have facilities to accommodate 350 in-patients at a time. The institute is claimed to provide the patients with preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, palliative and support services. Pandey is the chairman and managing director of the institution [1] and his sons and daughters and their families assist Pandey in running the institution. The hospital is accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) and National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). [2]

Pandey holds many positions:

Pandey was an official examiner for MRCS and FRCS examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh till 2000, and the National Board of Examinations (NBE) India. [1] [2] He is also a member of the National committee on Health of the Confederation of Indian Industry, [2] Senate of the Teerthanker Mahaveer University [2] and the Governing Council of the College of Surgeons of India. [10] he also serves as the director of Lakhani India Ltd, Blue Sapphire Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., Escorts Employees Welfare Ltd., Turquoise House of Design and Trading Pvt. Ltd.

Awards and recognitions

The Government of India, in 2014, honoured Narendra Kumar Pandey, by awarding him the civilian honour of Padma Shri. [3] The Government had earlier conferred on him the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, in 2008. [4] He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. [2] He has attended many national and international conferences and has delivered keynote addresses. He was a Guest of Honour at the third World Congress of the Laparoscopic Surgeons, organized by the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, [11] on 14-15 February 2012, in Gurgaon.

The Delhi Doctors' Association, in 1997, conferred the Distinguished Service Award on Pandey. He also received Betadine Achievement Award from the Association of Surgeons of India in 2010. The Teerthanker Mahaveer University, 2013, awarded him the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). [2] [8]

The Bidhan Chandra Roy Award was instituted in 1962 in memory of Dr. B. C. Roy by the Medical Council of India. It is presented by the President of India in New Delhi every year on July 1, National Doctors' Day. It is also the highest honour that can be achieved by a doctor in India.

The Government of India honored him, in 1998, with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his services to the field of Medicine.

Ashok Rajgopal is an Indian orthopaedic surgeon, credited with close to 20,000 Arthroscopic and over 35,000 Total Knee Arthroplasty surgeries and reported to be one of the most experienced in his field in India. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padmashri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of orthopaedic surgery. He has also been awarded the Dr. BC Roy award by the Medical Council of India to "Recognize the Best Talents in Encouraging the Development of Specialties in Different Branches in Medicine" for 2014.

Saroj Chooramani Gopal, is an Indian medical doctor, medical educationist and considered as the first woman M.ch paediatric surgeon from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in the country. She is currently the President, National Academy of Medical Sciences (India). She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education.

Ganesh Kumar Mani is an Indian cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, reported to have performed over 20,500 Coronary artery bypass surgeries. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education.

Vijay Kumar Dada is an Indian ophthalmologist and a consultant at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. An alumnus and a former chief of the Dr. R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he has written several articles on eye diseases such as cataract and glaucoma. Dada, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Pakkiam Vaikundam Arulanandam Mohandas is an Indian orthopedic surgeon from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is the founder and Mentor of Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, known as MIOT Hospital. He is a former assistant professor of Orthopedics at Stanley Medical College and former professor at Madras Medical College and Kilpauk Medical College, three of the known medical institutions in Chennai. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 1992. He is married to Mallika who is the chairman of the MIOT Hospitals.

Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of urology robotics (URobotic) surgeries in India. He is a former head of the department of urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Dr Malvika Sabharwal is an Indian gynecologist, laparoscopic surgeon andobstetrician at the Nova Specialty Hospitals of the Apollo Healthcare Group and at Jeewan Mala Hospital, New Delhi. The team led by her has been credited with the successful performance of the removal of the largest recorded fibroid through laparoscopic surgery. She leads the Gynae Endoscopy, a team of 140 doctors, involved in endoscopic surgical practices related to gynecology.
