Pramod Kumar Julka, is an Indian cancer specialist (oncologist), medical educationist and writer, known for performing the first peripheral blood stem cell transplant following high dose chemotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer in India. [1] He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education. [2] The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has awarded him by bestowing on him the honorary membership.

Biography

About 70% of cancer cases reach hospitals in Stage Three or Four and only 30% come in Stage One or Two. It obviously affects the cure rate. In our cancer centre, we get 15,000 new cancer cases every year, says Dr. Pramod Kumar Julka. [3]

Pramod Kumar Julka, a Delhiite, graduated in medicine and did MD in Radiotherapy from the Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, in 1979. [1] [4] He has also had higher training at the M. D. Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas, under World Health Organization fellowship and thereafter at the Long Beach Memorial Cancer Centre, Long Beach, California. [1] He joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in the year 1984 and has served there as Dean-Academics and Professor of the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology till the year 2016. [1] [4] He is presently working as Director-Oncology Daycare Centre at Max Healthcare. He has done extensive research in clinical oncology, radiation biology and chemotherapy. [1]

With more than three decades of experience in cancer treatment and research and credited with major breakthroughs, he has treated cancer patients from all segments of the society without any discrimination. Hundreds of patients- throng through the congested corridors of the hospital, to find Dr. Julka welcoming them and patiently treating them of this dreadful disease. The only thing as relentless as cancer is his commitment and dedication to fight it which he instills into all his patients.

Julka has a fond attachment to academics. He has taught graduate, postgraduate and doctoral students at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He works closely with Govt. of India and has been appointed by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to inspect cancer centers across the country under the National Cancer Control Programme. He served as a member of Specialty Board (National Board of Examination) to form curriculum for DNB-RT in the country. He has also served as a member of Doctoral Committee for Ph.D (Radiotherapy) and an expert for the selection of Professors, Readers and Lecturers at various cancer hospitals across the country. He is the Nominated member for the Academic Council of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU, Delhi) and Chairman (imaging and radiotherapy) for Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

An active participant in TV and Radio programs on cancer, Julka has conducted a series of talks on “Early Detection of Cancer and its Management” on National Network of Doordarshan since 1980. He has answered public’s and patient’s queries in various Phone-in-Programmes at All India Radio and DD News such as “Cancer in Females”, “Smoking and Cancer”, “Cell Phones and Cancer” etc. As a true Samaritan, he is always more than willing to lend his services in communicating the message to the viewers. Revered by a large number of media houses and publications, he educates the public through apt use of mass media such as newspapers and magazines.

Julka has published many articles, over 250 of them, [5] in national and international peer reviewed journals that has benefited eminent researchers across the globe; [1] [6] [7] ResearchGate listing 184 articles by him. [8] He has also authored a book under the name, Becoming A Successful Clinical Trial Investigator. [9]

Julka is credited with the first peripheral blood stem cell transplant following high dose chemotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer in India which he performed on 9 May 1995. This feat was included by the Limca Book of World Records, in 1998. [1] [10] He was invited as the Expert Oncologist by the Indian Federation of United Nations Associations in 1983. [1] He has been a member of the Indian Council of Medical Research Task Force for setting up cancer research projects across the country and is the oncology expert on the ICMR project review committee, since 1996. [1] He is also a member of the Society of Cancer Research [11] and the national advisory committee of Global Cancer Summit - 2015. [12] The other positions held by Dr. Julka are: Former President - Association of Radiation Oncologists of India [1] Former Chairperson - Indian College of Radiation Oncology (2000-2009) [1]

Awards and recognitions

Pramod Kumar Julka has won many awards and honours, besides the Padma Shri award (the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India) from the Government of India which he won in 2013 for his significant contribution to the field of medicine. [2]

M. Krishnan Nair was an Indian oncologist. He was the founding director of the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, a director of the S.U.T. Institute of Oncology, and Trivandrum Cancer Center(TCC), part of SUT Royal Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and a professor at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research in Kochi. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, in 2001 for his contributions in the cancer care field.

European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer

The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) is a unique pan-European non-profit clinical cancer research organisation established in 1962 operating as an international association under Belgium law. It develops, conducts, coordinates and stimulates high-quality translational and clinical trial research to improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients. This is achieved through the development of new drugs and other innovative approaches, and the testing of more effective therapeutic strategies, using currently approved drugs, surgery and/or radiotherapy in clinical trials conducted under the auspices of a vast network of clinical cancer researchers supported by 220 staff members based in Brussels. The EORTC has the expertise to conduct large and complex trials especially specific populations such as the older patient and rare tumours.

Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram Medical research centre in India

The Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) at Thiruvananthapuram is a cancer care hospital and research centre. RCC was established in 1981 by the Government of Kerala and the Government of India. It is located in the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College campus in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the state of Kerala. It was established as an expansion of the Radiation Therapy / Radiotherapy department of Medical College Trivandrum. It is a tertiary care center for the managements of all types of cancers. Ketayun Ardeshir Dinshaw Indian physician

Suresh H. Advani Oncologist who pioneered hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in India

Suresh Hariram Advani is an oncologist who pioneered hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in India. Struck by poliomyelitis at the age of 8 years, the wheelchair-using doctor studied at Grant Medical College, Mumbai, following which he worked at Tata Memorial Centre for several years as a medical oncologist. Now he consults at Raheja Hospital. He gained experience in the field of bone marrow transplantation from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Kodaganur S. Gopinath, MS, FAMS, FRCS (Edin) is an Indian surgical oncologist, known for his pioneering work on oncological research. He is a recipient of many awards including Dr. B. C. Roy Award, considered to be the premier medical honour in the country. The President of India recognised his services to the field of oncology, by awarding him the fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri, in 2010.

Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy is an Indian oncologist known for his contributions to the field of cancer. He serves as the director and senior consultant oncologist at Apollo Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad. He also served as the President of Association of Radiation Oncologists of India & Chairman of Indian College of Radiation Oncology.

Luis Jose De Souza is an Indian surgical oncologist and the founder of Shanti Avedna Ashram, a charitable trust which runs a network of hospices in Mumbai and Goa. He has also contributed to the establishment of Indian Cancer Cell, an educational program co-sponsored by Tata Memorial Centre, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and Indian Cancer Society, for creating cancer awareness in schools. The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 1992.

Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the Chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of URobotic surgeries in India. He is a former head of department of Urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. M. C. Pant

Mohan Chandra Pant (1956–2015) was an Indian radiation oncologist, institution builder and the founder vice chancellor of the H. N. B. Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun. He served as the Director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, and was the Dean and head of the Radiotherapy Department at the King George's Medical University at the time of his death. He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medicine.

Ashok K. Vaid is an Indian medical oncologist, known for his pioneering efforts in bone marrow transplantation in India. He is credited with the performance of the first 25 bone marrow transplantations in the private sector in North India. He heads the Cancer Institute- Division of Medical Oncology and Haemotology at Medanta The Medicity.

Prafulla B. Ragubhai Desai is an Indian surgical oncologist and a former chairman of the Research Advisory Committee on Oncology of the Indian Council of Medical Research. He is credited with the first bone marrow transplantation in India, which he performed with his team in 1983. He is a former director and superintendent at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai (1973–1995) and continues his association with the institution as their professor emeritus. He is one of the founders of the Rural Cancer Centre established by Tata Memorial Centre at Barshi, Mumbai and serves Breach Candy Hospital as a surgical oncologist and the Indo-Global Summit on Head and Neck Oncology (IGSHNO) as a member of their national faculty.

Ravi Kannan R Indian medical person and Padma Shri awardee

Ravi Kannan R is an Indian Surgical oncologist based in Assam, India. He is the Director of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC), a nonprofit hospital that treats cancer patients, and the former Head of Department of surgical oncology at Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai. He is the recipient of Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour.
