Dinesh K. Bhargava is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. [1] [2] He is one of the pioneers of gastrointestinal endoscopy in India for which the Medical Council of India awarded him Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, in 1989. [3] [4] He is also a recipient of the civilian honor of the Padma Shri. [5]

Biography

A former professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi, Bhargava has published over 150 medical papers in peer-reviewed international journals [6] and has served as an investigator in many clinical studies of the Indian Council of Medical Research. [7] He is a member of the scientific advisory committee of the Centre for Liver and Biliary Surgery (CLBS) [8] and a fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association (AGAF) and American College of Gastroenterology (FACG). He is a member and a former president of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology. The honors he has received include Dr. B. C. Roy Award, Hari Om Ashram award (1985) and Amrut Mody Unichem Prize (1989) of the Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr. R. M. Kasliwal Award of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (1989), and Olympus Mitra Award (1984) and Searle Award (1989) of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (1989). [3] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medical science. [5]

Jitendra Nath Pande or J. N. Pande was an Indian Pulmonologist and Professor and Head of Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Studies (AIIMS). He was working as Senior Consultant (Medicine) at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science & Research, New Delhi. He died on 23 May 2020 during sleep when he was home quarantined due to COVID-19 positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic in India, in New Delhi.

Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

He is a former member of the faculty at the Cambridge University, London University and Harvard University, and is the founder editor of the National Medical Journal of India and Tropical Gastroenterology. Ranjit Roy Chaudhury, was an Indian clinical pharmacologist, medical academic and health planner, who headed the National Committee for formulating the policy and guidelines on drugs and clinical trials in India. He was the chairman of the joint programme of World Health Organization and Government of India on Rational Use of Drugs in India. He was the founder president of the Delhi Medical Council and the president of the Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs.

Surinder Kumar Sama is an Indian gastroenterologist, known for his expertise in endocrinology and diabetology. He is considered by many as the Father of Gastroenterology in India. The discovery of Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease is attributed to him, which he described in a 1962 medical paper, co-authored with Ramalingaswami and Wig. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2004 for his pioneering research on liver diseases including Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and Hepatitis B. Sama also received the highest Indian medical honour of Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2004.

Mahipal S. Sachdev is an Indian ophthalmologist and the Chairman of Centre for Sight, a chain of Eye Hospitals in India. He is known as one of the pioneers of the phacoemulsification procedure in India. He is the co-author of A Practical Guide to Phacoemulsification, the first Indian book on the topic. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine. He is the Chairman Scientific Committee of the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India, IIRSI.

Randhir Sud, an Indian gastroenterologist and the Chairman of the Medanta Institute of Digestive and Hepatobiliary Sciences, is known to be one of the pioneers of Gastro Intestinal oncology in India. He is a former co-chairman of the department of gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.

Yash Gulati is an Indian orthopedic surgeon and the senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He specializes in joint replacement and spine surgeries and is a visiting consultant at RAK Hospital, Ras al-Khaimah. He is the youngest orthopedic surgeon to win the civilian honour of the Padma Shri.

Badri Nath Tandon was an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, medical researcher and academic, and the Chairman and Senior Consultant of Gastroenterology, at Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. He is a former Professor and Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition Unit at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) and a former Director and Senior Consultant of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute for Liver, Renal and Digestive Diseases, New Delhi. He is a recipient of several awards including Sasakawa WHO Health Prize and Jubilee Medal of the RAMS. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1986, for his contributions to medicine.

Harbhajan Singh Rissam (1951–2013) was an Indian interventional cardiologist, philanthropist and writer, known for his medical service and his novel based on medical profession. He was the director of cardiac clinical services at Max Healthcare, Delhi and his maiden novel, The Scalpel - Game Beneath, the first book of a proposed trilogy published in 2010, is a medical thriller on the medicine mafia. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to medical science.

Kallipatti Ramasamy Palaniswamy is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. He is a former president (2004–05) of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and a patron its Tamil Nadu chapter. After graduating in medicine from JJM Medical College, Davangere in 1972, he continued his studies to secure an MD in general medicine in 1977 and a DM in gastroenterology in 1981, simultaneously working as a member of faculty. In 1986, while working as an assistant professor, he was deputed to Stanley Medical College, Chennai as a professor where he established the department of gastroenterology.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Giriraj Singh Bora</span> Indian surgeon

Giriraj Singh Bora is an Indian liver transplant surgeon. He is the founder member of the Liver Transplant Society of India. Bora was the first surgeon to successfully transplant a liver in Rajasthan. He carried out the first deceased donor and the first living donor liver transplants in Rajasthan and has been instrumental in starting a liver transplant program in the region. He currently serves as the joint director of Liver Transplantation and senior consultant of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Artemis Hospital.
