Biography

He joined the Madras Medical College and completed his MBBS in 1962. In 1963, he joined the Army Medical Corps and served in the Indo-Pakistani War. For his service, he was awarded the Samar Seva Star and the Sainya Seva Medal. [2] [3]

Following his military service, he joined the Stanley Medical College and obtained an MD. He was appointed an assistant professor in the Madras Medical College. He started the Department of Diabetology in 1978. [4]

He was also involved with establishing the Pregnancy and Diabetes division at the Government Hospital for Women and Children in Chennai. [5] He has been the Founder and patron of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group India(DIPSI) since 2004. [6]

National GDM Awareness Day The government of India (MOHFW) started in 2019, recognizing the significant impact of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus on women's health, and has taken a crucial step. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare declared Prof. Seshah's birthday on March 10″ as India GDM Awareness Day. [7]

Senior diabetologists advocate the use of Metformin by the 8th week of pregnancy to prevent gestational diabetes. [8] When fetal insulin secretion begins, changes happen in maternal metabolism, says Dr. Seshiah. Hyperglycaemia causes non-communicable diseases in later life, so gestational diabetes is the mother of NCDs and transgenerational transmission of diabetes should be avoided. [9]

President of India, Mr Kovind, presented the Padma Shri to Dr. Veeraswamy Seshiah for Medicine in 2022, a distinguished professor of Tamilnadu's Dr. MGR Medical University, for a lifetime. [10]

The glucose tolerance test is a medical test in which glucose is given and blood samples taken afterward to determine how quickly it is cleared from the blood. It is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome. It is sometimes used as an off-label adjunct to lessen the risk of metabolic syndrome in people who take antipsychotics. Metformin is not associated with weight gain and is taken by mouth.

Gestational diabetes is a condition in which a person without diabetes develops high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes generally results in few symptoms; however, it increases the risk of pre-eclampsia, depression, and of needing a Caesarean section. Babies born to individuals with poorly treated gestational diabetes are at increased risk of macrosomia, of having hypoglycemia after birth, and of jaundice. If untreated, diabetes can also result in stillbirth. Long term, children are at higher risk of being overweight and of developing type 2 diabetes.

Large for gestational age (LGA) is a term used to describe infants that are born with an abnormally high weight, specifically in the 90th percentile or above, compared to other babies of the same developmental age. Padma Shri Piyong Temjen Jamir was a noted Hindi scholar and littérateur from Longsa village under Mokokchung district in Nagaland state of India. He was conferred the Padma Sri honour by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, in 2018 for the promotion of Hindi language and social work.

Shanti Devi was an Indian social worker born in 1934 in Balasore district of Indian state of Odisha. She was awarded the Padma Shri award on 9 November 2021 by the President, Ram Nath Kovind at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-IV, at Rashtrapati Bhavan for her social works and efforts to bring peace in the Maoist-affected Rayagada region of Odisha. Devi received the Radhanath Rath Peace Award and was awarded the Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 1994.
