Narayana Panicker Kochupillai, popularly known as N. P. Kochupillai, is an Indian clinical endocrinologist, Professor Emeritus of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a former head of the department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, [1] known to have contributed to the understanding of endemically prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorders. [2] A winner of 2002 Dr. B. C. Roy Award, he was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. [3]
Narayana Panicker Kochupillai was born in the South Indian state of Kerala on 10 February 1939. [4] He graduated in science (BSc) from the University of Kerala and secured his graduate (MBBS) and masters (MD) medical degrees from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. [2] [4] His advanced residency on Immunoassay technology was completed at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York under Dr. Rosalyn S. Yalow. [2] His career started at AIIMS as a member of faculty and as a consultant endocrinologist where he rose to become the head of the department of endocrinology and metabolism. [1] An Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Kochupillai is a former president of the Endocrine Society of India and is the Director of Medical Research at M. S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru. [2]
Kochupillai is reported to have over 35 years of research and teaching experience. [2] He is considered by many as a tertiary care specialist and his researches on internal medicine and clinical endocrinology are known to have assisted the medical fraternity to have a better understanding of the endemically prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorders. [2] His researches have been documented by way of over 145 medical research papers published in peer reviewed journals and he has mentored many masters and doctoral students in their studies. [2] [5] He has also conducted several medical conferences and has delivered keynote addresses. [6]
Kochupillai, a Solomon A. Berson International Fellow, is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (FNA), Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc) and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS). [2] [4] He received the Ranbaxy International Award in 1999 followed by Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, in 2002. [2] The Government of India honoured him again in 2003 with the civilian award of Padma Shri. [3] He is a recipient of Andhra Pradesh Diabetes Association Medal in 2004, Endocrine Society of India Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, FESTA Award of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in 2005 and Shree Dhanwantari Prize of Indian National Science Academy in 2009. [2] He has also delivered many award lectures such as Endocrine Society of India Annual Oration, Nutrition Society of India Srikantia Memorial Oration, ISCA Platinum Jubilee Lecture, ISCA Guha Memorial Oration and Uttar Pradesh Diabetes Association Sircar Oration. Vulimiri Ramalingaswami was an Indian medical scientist, pathologist and medical writer. His pioneering research on nutrition got him elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Society of London.

Veer Singh Mehta, is a notable Indian neurosurgeon. He received his education and training at SMS Medical College Jaipur and later at AIIMS. The Government of India awarded him Padma Shri in 2005. Noted neurosurgeon B. K. Misra was his junior at AIIMS Delhi.
The Bidhan Chandra Roy Award was instituted in 1962 in memory of Dr. B. C. Roy by the Medical Council of India. It is presented by the President of India in New Delhi every year on July 1, National Doctors' Day. It is also the highest honour that can be achieved by a doctor in India.

Jitendra Nath Pande or J. N. Pande was an Indian Pulmonologist and Professor and Head of Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Studies (AIIMS). He was working as Senior Consultant (Medicine) at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science & Research, New Delhi. He died on 23 May 2020 during sleep when he was home quarantined due to COVID-19 positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic in India, in New Delhi.
Ambrish Mithal is an Indian endocrinologist and the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Max Healthcare- Pan-Max, Saket, New Delhi, where he started working in December 2019. He secured the master's degree (DM) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and subsequently worked at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow and, later, at Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi before joining Medanta the Medicity as Chairman, Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes where he worked from 2009 to 2019. Mithal was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award, for his outstanding contribution to the field of medicine. In September 2020 Dr Mithal became the first Indian to be chosen for the Laureate Award for International Excellence in Endocrinology (2021) by the Endocrine Society (US).
Alka Kriplani is an Indian gynecologist,medical writer and academic, known for her contributions to the fields of Reproductive Endocrinology and Gynaecological Endoscopy. She was professor and the Head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. A recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2007, she was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
Nikhil Tandon is an Indian endocrinologist, medical academic and the head of the department of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He is a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 2005 and was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

He is the founder president of the Indian Association of Cancer Research and one of the founders of the Moving Academy of Medicine and Biomedicine. He is a recipient of the Om Prakash Bhasin Award. Jagdev Singh Guleria is an Indian general physician, cardiologist and a former Dean and Professor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He is the senior consultant of General Medicine at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research and an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2003.
Sheikh Sama is an Indian gastroenterologist, known for his expertise in endocrinology and diabetology. He is considered by many as the Father of Gastroenterology in India. The discovery of Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease is attributed to him, which he described in a 1962 medical paper, co-authored with Ramalingaswami and Wig. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2004 for his pioneering research on liver diseases including Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and Hepatitis B. Sama also received the highest Indian medical honour of Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2004.
Anoop Misra is an Indian endocrinologist and a former honorary physician to the Prime Minister of India. He is the chairman of Fortis Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol (C-DOC) and heads, National Diabetes Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation (NDOC). A former Fellow of the World Health Organization at the Royal Free Hospital, UK, Misra is a recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.
Badri Nath Tandon is an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, medical researcher and academic, and the Chairman and Senior Consultant of Gastroenterology, at Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. He is a former Professor and Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition Unit at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) and a former Director and Senior Consultant of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute for Liver, Renal and Digestive Diseases, New Delhi. He is a recipient of several awards including Sasakawa WHO Health Prize and Jubilee Medal of the RAMS. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1986, for his contributions to medicine.
Kewal Kishan Talwar is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic and writer, and a former chairman of the Medical Council of India. He is a former director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and is reported to have performed the first implantation of Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in South Asia. He is also credited with the introduction of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in India. He is a recipient of several honours including B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2006, for his contributions to medicine. Presently Dr. Talwar is working in PSRI Hospital Sheikh Sarai, New Delhi as the chairman of Cardiac Sciences
Ravinder Goswami is an Indian endocrinologist and professor at the department of endocrinology and metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. Known for his research on vitamin D deficiency, Goswami is an elected fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 2008.
Sanjay Kalra is an Indian endocrinologist working at Bharti Hospital, Karnal, Haryana. Kalra is the Immediate Past President of Endocrine Society of India and Vice President of South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies. He also serves on the executive council of the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India. He has over 1000 PubMed indexed articles to his name, and has fostered bilateral and multilateral links between various Afro Asian countries in the field of endocrinology. He has developed the terms Glucocrinology and Lipocrinology. and the Gluco Coper tool to assess coping mechanisms. Winner of the DAWN Award (2009). He has also published the concepts of diabetes fatigue syndrome, euthymia in diabetes, quaternary prevention in endocrinology, and quinary prevention.
Dr. Chandrakant S. Pandav is an Indian doctor who works on combating the iodine deficiency disorders. He is one of the founding members and regional coordinators for South Asia of International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). He played a crucial role in the iodisation of salt in India, which has earned him the title of "The Iodine Man of India".
