Ashok Seth (born 12 October 1954) is an Indian interventional cardiologist, [1] credited with the performance of over 50,000 angiograms and 20,000 angioplasties, which has been included in the Limca Book of Records, a book for achievements and records from an Indian perspective. [2] [3] [4] He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Ireland [5] and serves as the chief cardiologist, holding the chairs of the department of cardiovascular sciences and cardiology council at the Fortis Healthcare. [6] Seth, a recipient of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, was honored by the Government of India with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri, in 2003, [7] followed by Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award, in 2015. Biography

Ashok Seth graduated in Medicine (MBBS) from the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University in 1978. [2] [9] [10] Later, moving to UK for higher education, he served as a cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital of Birmingham University till 1988. [10] During this period, he did advanced training to secure memberships of the Royal College of Physicians of London (MRCP) in 1984 and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCP) in 1986. [3] [9] He returned to India in 1988 and joined the Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi, present day Fortis Healthcare, [2] [5] [10] as its Chief of Invasive and Interventional Cardiology and established the Invasive Cardiology programme at the institution. He stayed with Fortis Healthcare till 2004 to move to Max Healthcare, erstwhile Max Heart and Vascular Institute. [2] [3] He has also been serving as an honorary professor of cardiology at several other institutions such as Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal (since 2000), Raipur Medical College (since 2001), Bilaspur Medical College, (since 2001), D. Y. Patil University [11] (since 2008) and Bangladesh Medical College, Dhaka (since 1998). [2] [3] After four years of stay at Max, he returned to Fortis Healthcare [4] to resume his duties there as the chief cardiologist and the chairman of its Cardiac Sciences Division. [9] [12] [13]

Professional associations

Ashok Seth is a member of Asian Pacific Society of interventional Cardiology (APSIC) Board of Trustees [5] and SCAI Nominating Committee and sits on the advisory boards of ACC India, SCAI Interventional Fellows Institute (IFI), International Andreas Gruentzig Society (IAGS), E-Cypher, USA, Asia-Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology (Singapore) [14] and ERA Educational Trust and Medical College, Lucknow. [2] He holds the chair of the Indian chapter of the Organization of International Medical Video Interventional Program (IMVIP) and is the co-chairman of SCAI International Committee. [2] He is a voting selector of SCAI (MSCAI) Nominating Committee, Zonal vice president of Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology, associate director of TCT Scientific Sessions and the president of the Delhi branch of the Cardiological Society of India. [2] He is a founding member of Endovascular Intervention Society of India, [3] Academy of TCT, [3] New York and the SAARC Cardiac Society for Research, Training and Exchange of Expertise in Prevention and Treatment of Heart Disease in Asia. [2] [3] [5] He is a trustee of Indo-French Cardiovascular Foundation for Research, Education and Training in the field of Angioplasty and a former trustee of Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, USA. [2] [3] [5] He has also served as the vice president of the Cardiological Society of India [3] and as the chairman of the New Delhi branch of Indian Medical Association. [2]

On 18 July 2019, Ashok Seth appointed as President of Asia Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology. [15]

Legacy

Ashok Seth is credited with pioneering many cardiological techniques in the Asia Pacific region. [10] He is the first cardiologist in the region to perform an angioscopy and directional atherectomy. [2] [3] [10] He is reported to be the first to use Impella heart support device [16] and Drug-eluting stents, Bioresorbable stents and thrombectomy devices in India. [2] [3] [5] [9] [10] He is known to have contributed to the development of Bioresorbable Scaffold (BRS) Stent as a member of the Advisory Group. [2] The youngest person to receive a doctoral degree (Honoris Causa) from the Banares Hindu University, [3] Seth's tally of angioplasty and angiogram performances is noted by the Limca Book of Records as one of the highest in the world. [2] [5] He is known to perform Percutaneous Myocardial Laser Revascularization, [5] [17] reported to be among the few cardiologists in the World to perform the procedure. [3] [9] [10]

Seth, who is reported to have contributed to reaching the treatment to the poor, [18] is known to have involved in many research activities. His researches are documented by way of over 250 medical papers [19] [20] [21] published in peer reviewed national and international journals. [2] [3] [10] He has contributed chapters to 10 text books and has edited two text books on cardiology. [2] He has also trained over 350 cardiologists in India and abroad and has performed demonstrations on advanced angioplasty techniques at over 400 international conferences and seminars in Singapore, Malaysia, Paris, China, Australia, Korea and Sri Lanka. [2] His live demonstrations have been transmitted via satellite during the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference [5] in 2003 and 2007 and at the EuroPCR in 2003 and 2006. [2] [3]

Ashok Seth is involved with many scientific journals. He is a former Associate Editor of International Journal of Cardiology [5] and sits on the editorial boards of Journal American College of Cardiology, [22] Catheterization and Cardiovascular Intervention [23] and Euro Intervention [24] journals. [2] [5] Seth is the first Asian to be elected to the Board of Governors of Society of the Cardiac Angiographies and Intervention [25] (USA). [2] He has been a member of the expert committee set up by the society for formulating the guidelines laid down by its position statement, Percutaneous Coronary Interventions Without On-Site Surgical Backup. [2] He is a member of the expert committee of the Directorate General of Health Services under its Central Drugs Standard Control Organization. [2] He also serves as the chief coordinator of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research initiative, the NTMLI project for the indigenous manufacture of low cost drug-eluting stents within the country. Ashok Seth is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians of London. [2] [3] [5] [9] Institutions such as the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention, the Cardiological Society of India [27] and the International Medical Sciences Academy have also selected him as their Fellow. [2] [3] [9] He has received the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc — Honoris Causa) from Banaras Hindu University, [5] Teerthanker Mahaveer University and Amity University, Noida and the degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt — Honoris Causa) from Jamia Millia Islamia University. [2] [6] [9]

Seth, a Dudley Visiting Professor of the University of Birmingham, received the Distinguished Service Award from the IMA Academy of Medical Specialties in 1994. [2] Two years later, he received the Shresth Shree Award of the Delhi Citizens' Forum For Civil Rights and the National Award for Outstanding Contribution to Society from the All India Khatri Mahasabha [2] and in 1998, he received the Andreas Gruentzig Award. [2] [10] The year 1999 saw him getting two awards, the 20th Century Award for Achievement of International Biographical Centre, Cambridge and the Professional Excellence Award from the National Interventional Council of the Cardiological Society of India. [2] The All India Conference of Intellectuals honoured him with Delhi Ratna Award in 2000, and he received the Indian Medical Association Distinguished Interventional Cardiologist Award, the Rotary Vocational Excellence Award and the IJCP Interventional Cardiologist of the Year Award in 2002. The Government of India, in 2003, awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Shri [3] and in 2005, he received IMA NDB Life Time Achievement Award [10] and the DMA Medical Teachers' Award. He was also felicitated by the World Heart Federation, the same year. [2] Delhi Medical Association awarded him again in 2006 with the DMA Legend in Interventional Cardiology Award and at the World Congress on Clinical and Preventive Cardiology (WCCPC2006), he was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award. [2] The Geriatric Society of India also extended a Lifetime Achievement Award to him, in 2006. [2]

In the year 2007, he received a citation from the Cardiological Society of India, IMA-NDB Distinguished Service Award, IMA Doctor's Day Award, IMA Magnanimous Award and the World Congress on Clinical and Preventive Cardiology 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award. [2] [3] He received the WCCPGC-2008 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 12th Annual MIDI Management Excellence Award in 2008. [2] [3] He was awarded the Sunday Indian and IIPM Mega Excellence Award, WCCPGC-2009 Lifetime Achievement Award and IMA Dr. K. Sharan Cardiology Excellence Award in 2009. [2] [3] The Government of Spain included him in the National Day Honours for the Order of Isabella the Catholic (Crus De Oficial Con Insignia Orden De Isabel La Catolica) in 2010, [3] the same year as he received the Mason Sones Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, USA and the Atma Jyoti Award from the World Academy of Spiritual Science. The American Association of Cardiologists of Indian Origin (AACIO) recognised Seth's services with their Special Award in 2011 and he received three more awards the same year, Golden Pioneer of Interventional Cardiology Award from the Asian Interventional Cardiovascular Therapeutics, Lifetime Achievement Award by Rotary Club of Delhi, and the Vishisht Bihari Samman from the Bihar Shatabdi Utsav Aayojan Samiti. [2] Delhi Medical association awarded him the title, Vishisht Chikitsa Ratan and the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh selected him as the Most Glorious Alumni in 2012. [2] He received three awards in 2014, Doc N Doc-Gammex Saviour Award, DMA Centenary Award and Hero Lifetime Achievement Award. The Government of India selected him again for Republic Day Honours for the award of Padma Bhushan in 2015. [8] [9]

Ashok Seth has delivered several Oration Award lectures and Mohan Lal Oration, Dr. Amalendu Das Oration, Hindustan Ciba Geigy Oration, IMA-NDB K. L. Chopra Oration, R. L. Sharma and Padmabhushan R. L. Joshi Memorial Oration, Prof. Raymond Wegmann Oration, Professor G. S. Sainani Oration and S. B. Khurana Memorial Oration are some of them. [2] [3]

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure used to treat narrowing of the coronary arteries of the heart found in coronary artery disease. The procedure is used to place and deploy coronary stents, a permanent wire-meshed tube, to open narrowed coronary arteries. PCI is considered 'non-surgical' as it uses a small hole in a peripheral artery (leg/arm) to gain access to the arterial system, an equivalent surgical procedure would involve the opening of the chest wall to gain access to the heart area. The term 'coronary angioplasty with stent' is synonymous with PCI. The procedure visualises the blood vessels via fluoroscopic imaging and contrast dyes. Lourdes Heart Institute and Neuro Centre (LHINC) is a new block set up in Lourdes Hospital, Cochin, Kerala, India, to cater to tertiary level care for the entire spectrum of cardiovascular and neurological disease. It was inaugurated on 16 March 2007, by Mr. A. K. Antony, the Defence Minister of India. This institute was started to meet a long-felt need to provide cardiac and neurological interventional facilities, and especially to provide interventional neurological facilities for the treatment of strokes, including selective thrombolysis and primary angioplasty for stroke which was hitherto unavailable in this part of India.

Dr. Praveen Chandra is an Indian cardiologist and chairman of interventional cardiology at Medanta - The Medicity, Gurgaon, India. He is recognised as one of the leaders in angioplasty in the country and is proficient in a lot of new devices and technologies. He has been awarded for his contribution and services in the field of coronary angioplasty in India in 1998.

Purshotam Lal is an Indian cardiologist and chairman and director of Interventional Cardiology of the Metro Group of Hospitals. He has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan (2009), Padma Bhushan (2003),Dr. B. C. Roy Award (2004), and Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Medicine) (2022), He specializes in non-surgical closure of heart holes (ASD/VSD), non-surgical replacement of valves, and treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Govindan Vijayaraghavan is a cardiologist from India, credited with establishing the first 2D Echocardiography laboratory in India. He is the vice-chairman & Founder Director of the Kimshealthcare Trivandrum and the President of the Society for Continuing Medical Education and Research, Trivandrum, Kerala. He was honoured by Government of India in 2009 for his services in the field of medical sciences by awarding him Padmashri.

Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Indian College of Cardiology, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Indian College of Physicians, Cardiological Society of India and the Indian Society of Electrocardiology. He served as the president of the Cardiological Society of India from 1989 to 1990, a member of its panel of national advisors and national faculty and is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the society in 2012. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, in 1991.

Ashwin Balachand Mehta is an Indian cardiologist and one of the pioneers of interventional cardiology in India. He is the director of Cardiology department at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai and also serves Breach Candy Hospital, as a consultant. He is reported to have performed the first Cardiac catheterization and Angiography in newborn babies in India, in 1973, the year when he introduced Bundle Electrography in the country. He is also credited with the performance or supervision of over 35,000+ angioplasties and over 75,000+ angiographies.

Upendra Kaul is an Indian cardiologist and one of the pioneers of interventional cardiology in India. He is the Chairman and Dean Academics and Research at the Batra Hospital and Medical Research Center. He is known for his expertise in procedures such as Percutaneous Cardiopulmonary bypass, Rotational and Directional Atherectomy, Coronary stenting and Percutaneous Laser Myocardial Revascularization. He graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the Maulana Azad Medical College and continued his studies at the same institution to secure MD in 1975 and, DM in cardiology in 1978. Tarlochan Singh Kler is an Indian interventional cardiologist, medical administrator, writer, Chairman at Fortis Heart and Vascular Institute, and. Born in Amargarh in the Indian state of Punjab, he graduated in medicine from Punjabi University in 1976, secured his MD in general medicine from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in 1980 and followed it up with the degree of DM in cardiology from the same institution in 1983. He succeeded Naresh Trehan as the executive director of Fortis Heart Institute and Research Centre before becoming its director. He has written several articles on interventional cardiology; Persistent left superior vena cava opening directly into right atrium and mistaken for coronary sinus during biventricular pacemaker implantation, Mammary coronary artery anastomosis without cardiopulmonary bypass through minithoracotomy: one year clinical experience, and Ventricular Fibrillation in the EP Lab. Kewal Kishan Talwar is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic and writer, and a former chairman of the Medical Council of India. He is a former director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and is reported to have performed the first implantation of Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in South Asia. He is also credited with the introduction of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in India. He is a recipient of several honours including B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2006, for his contributions to medicine. Presently Dr. Talwar is working in PSRI Hospital Sheikh Sarai, New Delhi as the chairman of Cardiac Sciences

Sujoy Bhushan Roy was an Indian cardiologist and the founder Head of the department of the Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. He was the president of the Cardiological Society of India in 1972. He was known for medical research in cardiology and was reported to have coined the name, Juvenile Rheumatic Stenosis. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medical science.

Daljeet Singh Gambhir is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic, researcher and inventor and the Group Director of Cardiology at Kailash Group of Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. He is the inventor of Infinnium Paclitaxel-Eluting Stent, a reportedly cheaper drug-eluting stent which he first presented at the EuroPCR meeting held in Paris in 2003. A fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and an honorary fellow of the Indian College of Cardiology, he is reported to have performed over 10,000 coronary interventions. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medicine.

Harbhajan Singh Rissam (1951–2013) was an Indian interventional cardiologist, philanthropist and writer, known for his medical service and his novel based on medical profession. He was the director of cardiac clinical services at Max Healthcare, Delhi and his maiden novel, The Scalpel - Game Beneath, the first book of a proposed trilogy published in 2010, is a medical thriller on the medicine mafia. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to medical science.

The IACC, a non-profit organisation for non invasive cardiologists, was founded in 2008 by Dr. Rajesh Rajan, 4 Padma Shri doctors, Mohammed Shafiq and five other colleagues from Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences. Based in Kerala, this association works towards the prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) and the reduction of cardiovascular mortality in rural India.
