The Limca Book of Records is an annual reference book published in India documenting world records held by Indians. The records are further categorized into education, literature, agriculture, medical science, business, sports, nature, adventure, radio and cinema. [2] [ non-primary source needed ]

The Limca Book of Records is published in English and is a promotional tool of Limca, a soft drink brand, owned by the Coca Cola Company, it is a localised equivalent of the Guinness World Records . [3] [ non-primary source needed ]

History

The Limca Book of Records was first published in 1990, when the Limca soft drink brand was owned by Parle Bisleri. It was started originally by Ramesh Chauhan, who sold it to The Coca-Cola Company in 1993. [4] The book continued to be published by Coca-Cola. The Limca Book of Records is now published with the patronage of Coca-Cola India which manufactures Limca.

Editions

Its year 2006 edition was launched in New Delhi by Atul Singh, CEO of Coca-Cola India. [5]

On 25 September 2007, a special edition was released by Coca-Cola to commemorate 60 years of India's independence.

The 20th edition of this book was released by Amitabh Bachchan in March 2009. [6] Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief G. Madhavan Nair also participated in this event. [7]

The 21st text edition of the book was launched on 29 March 2011. As the sports achievers special edition, it pays special tribute to the Indian athletes in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

The 25th edition marking the Silver Jubilee of the book's publication was launched on International Women’s Day in 2014. [8] [9]

The 26th edition of Limca Book of Records was launched at the Jaipur Literature Festival in January 2015. [10] [11]

The 27th edition of Limca Book of Records is The Specially Abled Edition in 2016. [12]

People of the Year

Since 1992, Limca Book of Records has featured 'People of the Year'. A panel of judges (including the editorial team) selects people who have consistently contributed to 'Indian excellence'. [13]

Other media

Coca-colaindia.com published an online Limca book of records archive [14] featuring several landmark records set in India.

In 1996, the Indian national television channel Doordarshan broadcast 19 episodes of Limca Book Of Records Ki Anokhi Duniya which were hosted by Siddharth Kak and featured events from the book.

In 2008, Star TV News Channel aired Limca Book of Records Wah India Show on Saturdays and Sundays from April to December. [15]

Siddarth Kak made the film Triumph of the Spirit about the Limca Book of Records. [16] The film was broadcast by the National Geographic group Fox History and Entertainment channel in 2010.

Citra was a clear lemon- and lime-flavoured soda sold in India in the 1980s and early 1990s. Citra was owned by Parle Bisleri. Along with other Parle brands, Thums Up, Limca, Gold Spot and Maaza, Citra was sold to Coca-Cola in 1993 in a deal that was reportedly worth $40 million. At the time of sale, the Parle brands together had a 60% market share in the aerated water industry. The brand was strong in South India. Citra was phased out by the year 2000 to make way for Coke's international brand, Sprite.

Yeh Dil Maange More! is an advertising slogan coined for Pepsi at JWT by Anuja Chauhan in 1998. It combines Hindi and English, literally meaning This Heart Desires More, which later became a popular slogan. The slogan and its derivatives have been used in multiple contexts in India. The worldwide Pepsi commercial featuring the song, Ask for More, written by Janet Jackson was released in November 2007, later released a single in January 2008.

Surabhi ("Fragrance") was an Indian cultural magazine show hosted by Renuka Shahane and Siddharth Kak, which ran from 1990 to 2001 with a year's break in 1991. It was initially telecast on the state-run television channel Doordarshan, and later moved to Star Plus in the Sunday morning slot. Surabhi was produced by Kak's Mumbai-based production house Cinema Vision India. Its theme was Indian culture. The show is India's longest-running cultural series and features in the Limca Book of Records for receiving the largest measured audience response ever in the history of Indian television.

Netball Federation of India (NFI) is the national governing body of Netball in India. NFI is a non-profit, government funded organisation affiliated with the International Netball Federation (INF), the Asian Federation of Netball Association (AFNA) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. NFI was established in 1978 to standardise rules and regulations and to promote and develop the growth of netball in India. RimZim is a brand of masala soda currently owned and marketed by Coca-Cola in India. The brand was originally part of Parle Bisleri since its launch in the 1980s and was sold to Coca-Cola along with Thums Up, Limca, Citra and Gold Spot to Coca-Cola in 1993. Apart from Thums Up and Limca, the rest of the Parle brands were withdrawn from the market by its new owners. In 2012, Coca-Cola announced that it was reviving RimZim for the North India market where it had a strong base when withdrawn.
