Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. [1] He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures [2] and the highest number of urology robotics (URobotic) surgeries in India. [3] He is a former head of the department of urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. [4] He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. [5] The government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine. [6]

Gupta graduated in medicine from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, when the institution was known as the Government Medical College, in 1970 and continued his higher education there to secure a master's degree in surgery (MS) in 1974. [3] He started his career as a senior resident at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi (AIIMS) in 1975 and continued at AIIMS until 1978. [7] During this period, he pursued his studies, too, and obtained the degree of MCh in 1977. [2]

Moving to Iran in 1978, he worked as a consultant urologist at Shah Ismail Hospital at Ardabil for a year and returned to India and to AIIMS to join the institution as a member of faculty in 1979. He served the institution in various positions such as assistant professor (1984–1985), associate professor (1986–1989), additional professor (1989–1996) and professor (1996–1998) and retired from AIIMS service as the Head of the Department of Urology in March 2010. In between, he was a visiting urologist at Katharinenhospital Stuttgart  [ de ] from April to June in 1986. After his superannuation, he joined Medanta the Medicity and is the incumbent chair at the Academics and Research Division, Urology of the medical institution. [7]

Gupta is reported to have performed over 10,000 urological surgical procedures, including urobotic procedures, and is known to have performed the highest number of such procedures by a urologist in India. [3] He has been engaged in research in the discipline and has published over 300 articles [8] and six text books, [4] [9] including Robotic Radical Prostatectomy, All About Prostate Gland, Prostate Cancer Patient's Perspective and Challenging and Rare Cases in Urology, a practical guide for aspiring urological surgeons. [10] He has also contributed chapters to nine medical reference books [11] and has been a contributor towards the making of 18 educational videos. [4] He is a former president of the Urological Society of India (2006–07) where he is a life member and was involved with Societé Internationale d'Urologie, as a national delegate and member. [2] He is a life member of such organizations as Urolithiasis Society of India, Association of Surgeons of India, Geriatric Society of India, Indian Medical Association, Indian Society of Organ Transplantation, Indian Society of Oncology and Indian Endoscopy Society, an international member of the American Urological Association, and a member of the Society of Endourology and SWL. [3] Around 110 MCh students have been reported to have received training under Gupta. [2]

Awards and honours

The National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) elected Gupta as a fellow in 1998. [12] He has delivered several award lectures including the D. K. Roy Chowdhary Oration Award of the Indian Medical Association (1990), Dr. Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao Endowment Lecture Award and the Dr. Himadari Sarkar Memorial Oration (2008–2009) of the Urological Society of India (1998), Col. Sangham Lal Memorial Oration of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (2002), Dr. S. K. Sen Memorial Oration and the Golden Jubilee Oration (2007) of the Delhi chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (2002) and Dr. B. N. Oration of the Society of Surgeons of Nepal (2006). [7] He also received the Certificate of Commendation for Excellence of the Urological Society of India in 1987 and the International Scholarship from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio in 1998. [7]

Gupta received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad, in 2000 and the President's Gold Medal of the Urological Society of India in 2003. [7] The Medical Council of India awarded him the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award, in 2005, and he received the fellowship of the UICC ICCRT, the same year. [3] The government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, in 2007, the same year as he received the Eminent Men for Distinguished Achievement of Highest Order from the Indian Medical Association. [7] He received the Urology Gold Medal from the Urological Society of India and the Ranbaxy Research Award in 2009. [3] [13] Rani Durgavati University honoured him with the degree of Doctor of Science ( honoris causa ) in 2009 [3] and the Urological Society of India awarded him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. Mani Menon, born 9 July 1948 in Trichur, India, is an American surgeon whose work has helped to lay the foundation for modern Robotic Cancer Surgery. He is the founding director and the Raj and Padma Vattikuti Distinguished Chair of the Vattikuti Urology Institute at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, where he established the first cancer-oriented robotics program in the world. Menon is widely regarded for his role in the development of robotic surgery techniques for the treatment of patients with prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers, as well as for the development of robotic kidney transplantation.
Menon is the recipient of the Gold Cystoscope award, Hugh Hampton Young award, the Keyes Medal, the prestigious B.C. Roy award.

Ashutosh K. Tewari is the chairman of urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He is a board certified American urologist, oncologist, and principal investigator. Before moving to the Icahn School of Medicine in 2013, he was the founding director of both the Center for Prostate Cancer at Weill Cornell Medical College and the LeFrak Center for Robotic Surgery at NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Tewari was the Ronald P. Lynch endowed Chair of Urologic Oncology and the hospital's Director of Robotic Prostatectomy, treating patients with prostate, urinary bladder and other urological cancers. He is the current President of the Society for Urologic Robotic Surgeons (SURS) and the Committee Chair of the Prostate Program. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College (NSCB Medical College) is the third oldest medical college in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It was founded in 1955 as Government Medical College, Jabalpur. Admission is through a pre-medical entrance exam and the current class size is 250 students per year. It has a full service medical hospital on campus which is the main teaching hospital. It is also accredited for Post graduate and subspeciality medical education.

The Bidhan Chandra Roy Award was instituted in 1962 in memory of Dr. B. C. Roy by the Medical Council of India. It is presented by the President of India in New Delhi every year on July 1, National Doctors' Day. It is also the highest honour that can be achieved by a doctor in India.

Professor A. Ranganadha Rao M.B.B.S., M.S., M.Ch., D.Sc. was an Indian urologist. He is the first Urologist from Andhra Pradesh and the first person to perform a kidney transplantation in Andhra Pradesh.

He was the first surgeon to utilize ultrasound probe in robotic kidney surgery. On February 9, 2009, he performed the first twittered live robotic surgery.

Panangipalli Venugopal is an Indian Cardiovascular surgeon and hospital administrator from Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India who is widely regarded as a pioneer in cardiac surgery. The Government of India honored him, in 1998, with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his services to the field of Medicine.

Ashok Kumar Hemal is a urologist and medical academic, known as the first surgeon to perform robotic surgery in India. He is a former professor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi and is credited with efforts in establishing the department of robotic surgery at AIIMS where he has performed over 100 surgeries for cancer on kidney, prostate glands and urinary bladder. He has also served at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, as a professor and was a member of the team which developed teaching modules for the Centre for Medical Education Technology of AIIMS and Indira Gandhi National Open University. He has been involved in with many medical conferences and has published several medical articles; PubMed, an online repository of medical articles has listed 320 of them. Besides, he has authored a medical text book, Robotics in Urological Surgery, published by Springer Verlag. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Social Scientist Award of the University Grants Commission. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to medical science.

Arjunan Rajasekaran is an Indian urologist and one of the pioneers of male infertility therapy in India. He is a former Professor and Head of the Department of Urology at the Madras Medical College, the founder of Madras Andrology and Assisted Reproduction Research Centre, a Chennai-based male infertility clinic, and a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. He heads the National Board of Examinations as its president, the highest academic position in the medical sector in India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medical science.

Anthony James Costello, FRACS, FRCSI, is an Australian urologist. He served as head of the department of urology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia. He established the first robotic prostate cancer surgery programme in Australia and published the first series of men who had laser surgery for benign prostate enlargements.

Nitin Shrivastava is an Indian urologist and academic. Srivastava received training from Maulana Azad Medical College and completed his superspecialisation at AIIMS. Dr Nitin was a fellow at Department of Urology at Oxford University. His work revolves around use of robotics for renal oncology.
