Philip Augustine, an Indian gastroenterologist, specialist in gastrointestinal endoscopy and a hospital administrator from Ernakulam, Kerala. [1] He founded the Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre in 2003. [2] In 2010, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, for his services to the fields of medicine. [3]

Biography

Philip Augustine was born in Kaduthuruthy, Kerala. [4] Choosing medical profession, he secured his MD from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in 1975, with a Gold Medal[ citation needed ].

Augustine started his professional career at a clinic in the town of Koothattukulam. [4] Later, he specialised in Gastroenterology and had training in ultrasonography and endoscopy at various institutions.

In 1996, Augustine launched the work on the Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre. The hospital was opened in 2003. [5]

Augustine is married, has four children and presently lives in Palarivattom, Kochi, Kerala. [6]

The primary contribution of Augustine is the hospital he found in 1996, along with a bunch of doctors and businessmen, the Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre, which became operational in 2003. The hospital, has, over the years, grown to become one of the leading multi speciality health care centres in Kerala [5] and is stated to have several firsts to its credit. [1] [7] The hospital is certified by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers. [4]

Besides, Augustine is credited as the first to report on Crohn's disease in the country in 1995, which he submitted at the national conference of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology. he also led a team of doctors who first reported Recurrent Pyogenic Cholangites or Oriental Cholangiopathy in India. [4]

Augustine has published a book on bowel diseases which serves as a reference book on the subject. He has also published several scientific journals and has contributed chapters on pancreasis in medical text books. [1]

The Mar Augustine Kandathil Memorial Lisie Hospital is a hospital near Kaloor, in Kochi, India. It was founded in memory of Mar Augustine Kandathil, shortly after his demise, according to his original vision and plans, in 1957, as a token of his devotion to St. Thérèse de Lisieux. It is managed by the Archdiocese of Ernakulam. Lisie Hospital is a tertiary referral hospital and one of the largest in Cochin. The Lisie Heart Institute is a major interventional Cardiology and Cardiothoracic centre. It performed nearly 4000 interventional cardiac procedures and cardiac surgeries in 2006. Their team of doctors was reconstituted in 2008 with the joining of Jose Chacko Periappuram as the Head of Cardiac Surgery and Jacob Abraham as the head of Cardiac Anaesthesia. The present team was instrumental in performing the first total arterial bypass surgery on a beating heart and heart transplantation under Dr. Jose Chacko in the state of Kerala.

Jose Chacko Periappuram is an Indian cardiac surgeon and medical writer who performed the first successful heart transplant in the state of Kerala, India, as well as the first successful heart retransplant in the country. Periappuram is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of London. Vijay Prakash Singh, also known as Vijay Prakash, is an Indian gastroenterologist and the Head of Department of Gastroenterology at Patna Medical College, Bihar. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award, and only the 7th doctor in Bihar state to receive the award.

Samiran Nundy is an Indian gastrointestinal surgeon, medical academic, writer and the President of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh. He is a former member of the faculty at the Cambridge University, London University and Harvard University, and is the founder editor of the National Medical Journal of India and Tropical Gastroenterology. The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1985.

Sheikh Sama is an Indian gastroenterologist, known for his expertise in endocrinology and diabetology. He is considered by many as the Father of Gastroenterology in India. The discovery of Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease is attributed to him, which he described in a 1962 medical paper, co-authored with Ramalingaswami and Wig. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2004 for his pioneering research on liver diseases including Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and Hepatitis B. Sama also received the highest Indian medical honour of Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2004.

D. S. Rana is an Indian nephrologist and the Chairman of the Department of Nephrology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, known for his proficiency in renal transplant procedures. Born in Dasmal, Hamirpur in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, he graduated in medicine from the Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla and did his advanced training in clinical nephrology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He is an international scholar of the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio and is a member of the Board of Management of the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Parvati Education and Health Society, an organization founded by Rana operates a small 5-bedded hospital in his native village of Dasmal for the rural poor. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2009, for his contributions to Medicine. He is the first Himachal Pradesh resident awarded Padma Shri.

Thoguluva Shesadri Chandrasekar is an Indian gastroenterologist and the founder chairman of Medindia Hospitals, a healthcare facility based in Chennai. He is credited with the performance of over 23,000 endoscopy procedures and is known for the Braille chart on personal hygiene he prepared in 2015 for the visually impaired people. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medicine.

Kallipatti Ramasamy Palaniswamy is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. He is a former president (2004–05) of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and a patron its Tamil Nadu chapter. After graduating in medicine from JJM Medical College, Davangere in 1972, he continued his studies to secure an MD in general medicine in 1977 and a DM in gastroenterology in 1981, simultaneously working as a member of faculty. In 1986, while working as an assistant professor, he was deputed to Stanley Medical College, Chennai as a professor where he established the department of gastroenterology.

Dinesh K. Bhargava is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. He is one of the pioneers of gastrointestinal endoscopy in India for which the Medical Council of India awarded him Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, in 1989. He is also a recipient of the civilian honor of the Padma Shri.
