C. U. Velmurugendran is an Indian neurologist, medical writer and the chairman and head of the Department of Neurology at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. [1] [2] He is an honorary professor at the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati and has contributed chapters to books including Diseases of the Spinal Cord, published in 2012. [3] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medicine. [4]
Born to DR C.S. Uthamaroyan in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Velmurugendran graduated in medicine (MBBS) from University of Madras and followed it up with the degrees of MD and DM from the same institution,{.Prof & Head, Neurology Dept: Inst of Neurology, Madras Medical College & Govt Gen Hospital, Chennai 1985-98, Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Inst, Chennai 1999-2016; Prof Emeritus, Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical Univ, Chennai 1999-; Hon Prof, Sri Venkateswara Inst of Medical Scs, Tirupati 2002-; [5] Moving to the World Health Organization (WHO) and after working for one year during 1974–75, he joined the faculty of Neurosciences at the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in 1975. He continued there till 1999 to superannuate as the Professor Emeritus and joined the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute.[ citation needed ] In between, he also served as the Faculty Selection Committee of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, (1994) and Banares Hindu University (1996–1998). A recipient of the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) from the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, he is the founder of a sheltered workshop for chronic epileptic patients in Chennai[ citation needed ] and has organized several medical conferences, including the International Congress of Child Neurology 2016 at Chennai. [6] He was elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in 2006, [7] and was awarded the civilian honour of the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2008. Ramamurthi Balasubramaniam was an Indian neurosurgeon, author, editor, a pioneer in neurosurgery in India and often recognized as the Father of Neurosurgery of India. He set up the Department of Neurosurgery at the Government General Hospital, Chennai in 1950, the Department of Neurosurgery at the Madras Medical College and founded the Institute of Neurology, Madras in the 1970s. Voluntary Health Services, popularly known as the VHS Hospital, is a multispecialty tertiary care referral hospital in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, reportedly serving the economically weaker sections of the society. Mohan Kameswaran is an Indian otorhinolaryngologist, medical academic and the founder of MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing, a Chennai-based institution providing advanced training in audiology and speech-language pathology. He is one of the pioneers of cochlear implant surgery in India and a visiting professor at Rajah Muthiah Medical College of the Annamalai University and Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. He has many firsts to his credit such as the performance of the first auditory brain stem implantation surgery in South and South East Asia, the first pediatric brain stem implantation surgery in Asia, the first totally implantable hearing device surgery in Asia Pacific region, and the first to introduce KTP/532 laser-assisted ENT surgery in India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian medicine.
Thanikachalam Sadagopan is an Indian cardiologist, medical academic, and former Vice-Chancellor at the Sri Ramachandra University. He is the chairman and director of the Cardiac Care Centre at Sri Ramachandra University and an adjunct professor at the Biomedical Engineering Group of the Department of Applied Mechanics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. He is known for research on preventive cardiology and has published several articles on the subject. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Medicine.
Kallipatti Ramasamy Palaniswamy is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. He is a former president (2004–05) of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and a patron its Tamil Nadu chapter. After graduating in medicine from JJM Medical College, Davangere in 1972, he continued his studies to secure an MD in general medicine in 1977 and a DM in gastroenterology in 1981, simultaneously working as a member of faculty. In 1986, while working as an assistant professor, he was deputed to Stanley Medical College, Chennai as a professor where he established the department of gastroenterology.
Arjunan Rajasekaran is an Indian urologist and one of the pioneers of male infertility therapy in India. He is a former Professor and Head of the Department of Urology at the Madras Medical College, the founder of Madras Andrology and Assisted Reproduction Research Centre, a Chennai-based male infertility clinic, and a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. He heads the National Board of Examinations as its president, the highest academic position in the medical sector in India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medical science.
Subramanian Kalyanaraman is an Indian neurosurgeon and a former head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. He was known for his pioneering techniques in stereotactic surgery and is an elected fellow of a number of science and medical academies including the National Academy of Medical Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 1969.
