Shashank R. Joshi is an Indian endocrinologist, diabetologist and medical researcher, considered by many as one of the prominent practitioners of the trade in India.[ citation needed ] He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the field of medicine.[ citation needed ] He is a part of the COVID-19 Task Force for the state of Maharashtra, India. Biography

Born in Mumbai, the capital of the western Indian state of Maharashtra, Shashank R Joshi had a noteworthy academic career, topping all the medical examinations he sat for with first rank and gold medal. [3] [4] Joshi secured his graduate degree in medicine, MBBS, from the Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals, Mumbai which was followed with MD in internal medicine and senior residency from the Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital.[ citation needed ] He continued his higher education at the Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals and subsequently got DM in endocrinology. [4] He is also a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology(USA), Fellow of the American College of Physicians (USA), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) and the Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh). [4] He has a Diploma of Growth from Sweden, too. [3] [5] [6]

Joshi started his career by joining the faculty of the Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital at their endocrinology department. [5] Later, he moved to the Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals as a faculty member. He is now working at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai, as the Consultant Endocrine and Metabolic Physician[ citation needed ] and has private practice at Joshi Clinic in the city. [3] [7] He also works as consultant endocrinologist at Bhatia Hospital, [8] Mumbai and serves as visiting faculty at various Indian and international universities. [5]

Shashank R Joshi is married to Shilpa, who is a dietician and diabetics educator and the couple has two daughters, Samika and Spandana [3]

Positions

Joshi is the President of two important organizations, the Indian Academy of Diabetes [9] and the Association of Physicians of India [10] (API). [4] [5] He was also a former President of the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India [11] (RSSDI) and the All India Association of Advancing Research in Obesity. [3] [4] [6] [7] He is the former Vice President of the Association of Physicians of India [3] [5] [6] [7] and is now its advisory board member.[ citation needed ]

Joshi is involved with the activities of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) [12] and is serving as the Chairperson of its India Chapter. [4] [5] [6] Some of the past positions he held include:

Research and publications

Shashank Joshi is involved in evidence based research on Endocrinology with special emphasis on Diabetes, Obesity, Thyroid, Osteoporosis and Growth. [4] [5] His studies on the Asian Indian phenotype (thin-fat Indian), co-morbidities in hypothyroidism and the impact of vitamin D deficiency on bone health in Asian Indians are notable. [3] He has also worked as the principal investigator in many teams engaged in multinational clinical trials[ citation needed ] and has covered two epidemics of diabetes and hypertension in India and Adult Growth Hormone deficiency. Joshi is a prolific writer of articles on Diabetology and Endocrinology and has published 18 books and monograms [3] and over 600 research publications on topics such as Diabetes, Obesity, Thyroid disorders, Osteoporosis, and Growth. [4] [5] He is also the Editor of Practical Medicine, a popular undergraduate Indian text book.[ citation needed ] He is also the Editor Emeritus of the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India [4] [5] [13] and has been the Editor of three prominent Indian journals namely Indian Journal of Obesity, Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism [14] and Indian Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. [4] [15] Dr. Joshi founded the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine and was its Executive Editor.[ citation needed ]

Awards and recognitions

Shashank R Joshi was honoured by the Government of India by awarding him the Padma Shri, in 2014, in recognition of his efforts to the cause of medicine. [16] He is also a recipient of the International Clinician Award, received at the 21st American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress, Philadelphia. This is an annual award given to practicing endocrinologists, outside the US. [4] [7] [17] Pharma Leaders in the year 2013 conferred "Medical Expert of the Decade" at 6th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit founded by Satya Brahma. [18] Indian Affairs India Leadership Conclave 2014 edition declared Dr. Shashank Joshi as "Healthcare Visionary of the Year" . [19]

Anoop Misra is an Indian endocrinologist and a former honorary physician to the Prime Minister of India. He is the chairman of Fortis Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol (C-DOC) and heads, National Diabetes Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation (NDOC). A former Fellow of the World Health Organization at the Royal Free Hospital, UK, Misra is a recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Shantilal Jamnadas Mehta (1905–1997) was an Indian surgeon, institution builder and medical academic, who established the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai. His contributions were also reported in the establishment of Tata Memorial Centre and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. In 1971, the Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to medicine.

Shantilal Chhaganlal Sheth (1912–1990) was an Indian pediatrician and the president of several medical institutions including the Medical Council of India, the apex body for matters related to medical administration and education in India. An honorary surgeon commander at the Indian Navy, he served as the honorary physician to the President of India. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medicine.

Endocrine Practice is a bimonthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering endocrinology. It was established in 1995, and is the official journal of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American College of Endocrinology (ACE). It is published by AACECOR, Inc., a subsidiary of the AACE and ACE, and the editor-in-chief is Derek LeRoith. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2017 impact factor of 3.805.

Paul Michael Stewart FMedSci FRCP is Dean of Medicine and Health at the University of Leeds and an Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is also currently Vice President of the Academy of Medical Sciences and the editor-in-chief of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Rexford Sefah Ahima is a Professor of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing; Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Diabetes at the Johns Hopkins Medical School; and the Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Ahima's research focuses on central and peripheral actions of adipocyte hormones in energy homeostasis, and glucose and lipid metabolism.

Lesley Veronica Campbell is an Australian endocrinologist and Professor of Medicine with a special interest in clinical diabetes, appetite and metabolism. She is a principal research fellow at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia.

Sanjay Kalra is an Indian endocrinologist working at Bharti Hospital, Karnal, Haryana. Kalra is the Immediate Past President of Endocrine Society of India and Vice President of South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies. He also serves on the executive council of the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India. He has over 1000 PubMed indexed articles to his name, and has fostered bilateral and multilateral links between various Afro Asian countries in the field of endocrinology. He has developed the terms Glucocrinology and Lipocrinology. and the Gluco Coper tool to assess coping mechanisms. Winner of the DAWN Award (2009). He has also published the concepts of diabetes fatigue syndrome, euthymia in diabetes, quaternary prevention in endocrinology, and quinary prevention.

Vijay Viswanathan is a diabetologist from India who is the chief diabetologist at M.V. Hospital for Diabetes based in Chennai. He is also the President of Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre and the first Asian President of D-Foot International, a non-profit organization based in Belgium. Viswanathan has published over 543 research papers, in publications including the National Library of Medicine, on topics such as primary prevention and management of diabetes, diabetic foot and prevention of amputation, diabetic nephropathy, socio-economics of diabetes care and Pulmonary TB and diabetes.
