Daya Kishore Hazra is an Indian medical doctor, known for his expertise in nuclear medicine and endocrinology. [1] [2] The Government of India honoured him, in 2014, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine. [3]

Biography

Daya Kishore Hazra was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India to Dr. J.N. Hazra, the eminent Homeopath who later became the Guru of the Radha Soami Sect [4] [5] and completed his primary studies from St. Peter's College, Agra it is ranked one of the oldest and best ICSE schools in India.He graduated in medicine from Sarojini Naidu Medical College, Agra. Later, he went to London for higher studies in endocrinology and nuclear medicine, returned to his alma mater, in 1970, to work there till 2000. [6] This was followed by his stint with the Indian College of Physicians, where he worked as the Dean. [7] [8] His present profile is as the Head of Nuclear Medicine at the Boston Medical Centre, Agra. [2] [9] On his retirement from Sarojini Naidu Medical College, he was conferred the title of Professor Emeritus. [6] [7] [9] [10]

Hazra, considered by many as a pioneer of nuclear medicine in India, [11] is best known for his contributions to radioimmunoassays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. He is credited with pioneering contributions in the monitoring of hypothyroidism and in the analysis of triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroid-stimulating hormone TSH hormones. [1] He is reported to have developed T3 and TSH hormone tests [7] [8] and the technique to contain cancerous cells using isotopes, deploying a therapeutic protocol called radio-bioconjugate therapy. [11] Reports confirm that these achievements assisted him to be shortlisted for the Nobel Prize for Physiology in 1977. [7] [11]

Hazra's studies on obesity and the effect of iodized salt are well documented. He asserted that iodized salt, contrary to popular belief, has an adverse effect on human physiology, especially in the care of women. [1] One of the early Indian medical scientists in the area of evidence based endocrinology, Dr. Hazra pioneered the studies on small intestines functions in diabetes mellitus. [1] [11] He is a frequent speaker at various national and international seminars, [2] [12] and has published over 100 research papers in peer reviewed journals of repute. Sarojini Naidu Medical College (SNMC), is one of the oldest medical schools of India. It is located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh state. It is named after the first lady Governess of Uttar Pradesh, poet and freedom fighter, Bharat Kokila Smt. Sarojini Naidu. The college has the hospital attached to it named Sarojini Naidu Hospital.

Saroj Chooramani Gopal, is an Indian medical doctor, medical educationist and considered as the first woman M.ch paediatric surgeon from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in the country. She is currently the President, National Academy of Medical Sciences (India). She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education.

Thakur Vijay Pal Singh is an Indian scientist associated with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and is known for his contributions to the science of rice breeding. A post graduate and a doctoral degree (PhD) holder in Agriculture Botany from Agra University, he started his career as a research assistant at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and is a professor at the ICAR sponsored Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Agronomy. Singh is credited with a book, Responses of Irrigation Scheduling and I.N.M. on Scented Rice and several articles published in peer reviewed journals. He was honored by the Government of India, in 2012, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Anoop Misra is an Indian endocrinologist and a former honorary physician to the Prime Minister of India. He is the chairman of Fortis Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol (C-DOC) and heads, National Diabetes Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation (NDOC). A former Fellow of the World Health Organization at the Royal Free Hospital, UK, Misra is a recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Ravinder Goswami is an Indian endocrinologist and professor at the department of endocrinology and metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. Known for his research on vitamin D deficiency, Goswami is an elected fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 2008.

Naval Kishore Vikram is an Indian physician, diabetologist and a professor at the department of medicine of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. He is known for his studies in the field of metabolic disorders with special emphasis on insulin resistance and obesity and his work assisted in profiling the Indian population with regard to imbalanced dietary practices and cardiovascular risk factors. He was a member of the group which proposed guidelines for obesity management, metabolic syndrome, and dietary controls for Asian Indians. His studies have been documented by way of a number of articles and ResearchGate, an online repository of scientific articles has listed 125 of them.
