Lakshmikutty (born 1943) is a tribal woman from Kallar forest area at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India who received the India's fourth highest civilian honour Padma Shri for her breakthrough in practicing traditional medicine. [1]

Early life

Lakshmikutty is a famous poison healer practicing traditional medicine. She also received Kerala Government's Naattu Vaidya Ratna award in 1995. She is practicing traditional medicine for over 50 years. [2]

She belongs to Kaani tribe and can remember more than 500 varieties of medicine. [3] She has attained the education of 3rd forum and knows Sanskrit. [4] She also writes poems, dramas and is a teacher in Kerala Folklore Academy. [2]

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about Lakshmikutty's contributions in his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio programme. People fondly refer to her as ‘Vanamuthassi’ (Grandmother of the jungle in Malayalam) and she gives lectures on natural medicine at various institutions across the southern states. [5]

He is reported to have the largest collection of renal stones in India, exceeding one million in number, which has earned him a mention in the Limca Book of Records. He is a recipient of several honours including the fourth highest Indian civilian award of the Padma Shri.

Meenakshi Amma Gurukkal is an Indian martial artist known as a practitioner and teacher of Kalaripayattu, the traditional martial arts form of Kerala, India. In 2017, she received Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award.

Sulagitti Narasamma was an Indian midwife from Pavagada town, Tumakuru district of Karnataka state. She performed more than 20,000 traditional deliveries free of charge over a 70-year period of service in deprived regions of Karnataka with no medical facilities. Her work was honored with the National Citizen's award of India in 2012 and the country's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2018.

Dr. Krishna Mohan Pathi is an Indian orthopedic surgeon from Odisha, India, who is known for his work in Odisha's tribal areas. He treats the poor for free of cost. He is the founder of Bharadwaj Gurukul Ashram, a charitable organization that helps the poor and needy with medical treatment for the last three decades, as of 2021. On January 26, 2021, the Government of India conferred him India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri.

Devarapalli Prakash Rao was an Indian social worker from Odisha. Shanti Devi was an Indian social worker born in 1934 in Balasore district of Indian state of Odisha. She was awarded the Padma Shri award on 9 November 2021 by the President, Ram Nath Kovind at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-IV, at Rashtrapati Bhavan for her social works and efforts to bring peace in the Maoist-affected Rayagada region of Odisha. Devi received the Radhanath Rath Peace Award and was awarded the Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 1994.

Sakini Ramachandraih was an Indian vocal folk singer and Dhol player from the Bhadradri town in the Telangana State in India. He was known for his expertise in "Kanchumelam-Kanchuthalam" an art form particularly identified with the Koya tribal community in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This art form is almost on the verge of extinction and Ramachandraih was the only surviving practitioner of the art who could narrate the history of the sacred festival "Sammakka Sarakka Jathara" in both the Telugu and Koya languages in its totality. In the year 2022, the Government of India honoured Ramachandraiah by conferring the Padma Shri award for his contributions to art.

Smriti Rekha Chakma is an Indian artisan and loin-loom weaver from the Chakma community in Tripura known for her work with eco-friendly, vegetable-dyed cotton threads in traditional designs. She is the founder of Ujeia Jadha, an organization that trains rural and tribal women in weaving techniques.

Hirabai Ibrahim Lobi is an Indian tribal leader and social worker from Gujarat, is known for her tireless efforts to uplift the Siddi tribal community. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2023, one of India's highest civilian honors, for her contributions to social work.
