T. V. Devarajan, is an Indian medical doctor and general physician. The Government of India honoured him, in 2013, by awarding him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of medicine. [1]
Devarajan was born in Thrissur, in the south Indian state of Kerala. He graduated in medicine and went on to take the degrees of MD and DSc in general medicine. [2] He was also awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow in 2007. [3] [4]
He started his career by joining the faculty of the Madras Medical College, where he taught without drawing a salary [3] for 29 years. [5] Later, he moved to the Aarupadai Veedu Medical College, Kirumambakkam, as a professor, where he still teaches general medicine.[ citation needed ] He has also been a senior consultant physician at the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, since 1986. He is the author of four books, Aids to Clinical Medicine, [6] Medicine in a Nutshell [7] Clinical Medicine Made Easy [8] and Medical Advice for Healthy Life. [9]
Devarajan is also credited with 28 articles [4] such as A Challenging Case of Intra-abdominal Sepsis with Multiorgan Failure: An Emerging Role of Intravenous Immunoglobulin in Sepsis, [10] published in various journals. He also assists students in their research activities. [11] He was awarded gold medal for surgery, gynaecology and prize in medicine and ophthalmology as a medical student. He delivered student memorial oration in Madras Medical College and he served as an inspector for national board of examination.
Devarajan, an examiner for a few universities, [4] lives in Chetpet, Chennai, in Tamil Nadu. [12] His daughter, Sangeetha Devarajan, has followed her father's footsteps and is a UK-based gynaecologist and a member of the Royal College of Gynaecologists. [3]
Devarajan is also a member of professional bodies such as the Cardiological Society of India [13] and the Chennai chapter of the Association of Physicians of India. [14] He is also the editor in chief in preparation of a textbook of medicine. He is a jury member for selection of Oscar awards in medicine by BMJ. He is an examiner for MBBS, MD and PhD for many universities.
Devarajan was honoured with Dr. B. C. Roy Award, recognizing him as an eminent teacher, in 2003. [3] [4] [5] [13] In 2013, the Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri. [1] [5]
Diwan Bahadur Sir Arcot Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, FRCOG, FACS was an Indian educationist and physician. He was the identical younger twin brother of Sir Arcot Ramasamy Mudaliar. Initial education was in Kurnool and they moved to Chennai in 1903.
Mary Puthisseril Verghese (1925–1986) was a physician in India who was among the earliest pioneers of Physical medicine and rehabilitation in the country. Mary Verghese was instilled in a home where love and respect were two main factors in their close knit family. She was caring of others and wanted to give back to her community in any way that she could. In 1963, she took charge of what was the first department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with an inpatient facility in India at the Christian Medical College, Vellore. She was instrumental in expanding the services of the department with the establishment of the first inpatient rehabilitation institute of the country in 1966. In recognition of her contributions to the field of medicine, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1972.
Govindan Vijayaraghavan is a cardiologist from India, credited with establishing the first 2D Echocardiography laboratory in India. He is the vice-chairman & Founder Director of the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences and the President of the Society for Continuing Medical Education and Research, Trivandrum, Kerala. He was honoured by Government of India in 2009 for his services in the field of medical sciences by awarding him Padmashri.
M. Subhadra Nair is an Indian gynaecologist, medical teacher and social worker, reportedly credited to have assisted over 50,000 child births. The Government of India honoured her, in 2014, with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her services to the field of medicine, the first gynaecologist to receive the Padma award.
Ramachandra Dattatraya Lele is a physician from India. He established the department of Nuclear Medicine at Jaslok Hospital. Over the years he has worked in medical education, practice, research and hospital administration. He held the roles of Professor and Department Head at Mumbai's Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals. His autobiography, 'Pursuit of Excellence' was published in 2017.
Shashank R. Joshi is an Indian endocrinologist, diabetologist and medical researcher, considered by many as one of the prominent practitioners of the trade in India. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the field of medicine. He is a part of the COVID-19 Task Force for the state of Maharashtra, India.
Hakim Syed Khaleefathullah is an Indian physician and the founder of Niamath Science Academy, known for his scholarship and expertise in the alternative medicine system of Unani. Randeep Guleria is an Indian pulmonologist and the current director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, credited with the establishment of India's first centre for pulmonary medicines and sleep disorders at AIIMS. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. He is a part of India's COVID-19 response effort.

Yog Raj Sharma is an Indian ophthalmologist and ex-Chief of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, the apex body of the National Programme for the Control of Blindness, a Government of India initiative to reduce the prevalence of blindness in India. He is the Chairman of the Task Force on Prevention and Control of Diabetic Retinopathy Group and the Co-Chairman of the National Task Force on Prevention of Blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. An advisor to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India, Sharma was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. Yog Raj Sharma's published article on " Pars plana VITRECTOMY Vs scleral BUCKLING Inrhegmatogenous retinal detachment" in 2005 in Acta OPHTHALMOLOGICA SCANDINAVICA was cited in top 100 publications on retinal detachment management in the last ~121 years in the lead article in journal of American society of retina SPECIALISTS in November issue in 2021. Yog Raj Sharma was the first author and primary surgeon in study patients. Coauthors in the study included Dr Dr Sathiyan, Rajvardhan Azad, Deependra V Singh, Rajpal Vohra, Nikhi Pal, Parijat Cahandra . Dr Sharma called it 'the singular biggest achievement of his career" in an article published in Daily Excelsior,jammu in December, 2021. Of these top hundred publications on RETINAL detachment management, only nineteen countries contributed of 196 countries, three of the CONTRIBUTing countries were Asian and from India this study was the sole contribution. Pakkiam Vaikundam Arulanandam Mohandas is an Indian orthopedic surgeon from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is the founder and the managing director of Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, known as MIOT Hospital. He is a former assistant professor of Orthopedics at Stanley Medical College and former professor at Madras Medical College and Kilpauk Medical College, three of the known medical institutions in Chennai. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 1992. He is married to Mallika who is the chairman of the MIOT Hospitals.
Kurudamannil Abraham Abraham was an Indian interventional cardiologist and a medical writer. He was a Chief Cardiologist at the Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital, Chennai, and Chief Medical Director of the Southern Railways, where he worked for 25 years. He graduated from the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore and started his career by joining the Indian Army, serving the Forces during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Resuming his studies after the war, he received a degree in internal medicine and returned to Christian Medical College and Hospital in 1973. In 1978, he moved to Perambur to join the Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital, Chennai where he worked till his superannuation from government service in 2002. During his tenure, the hospital is reported to have grown to become a referral hospital which carries out over 1000 open heart surgeries every year.
Gurumukh Sajanmal Sainani is an Indian general physician, medical researcher, medical writer and an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He is a former director of the All India Heart Foundation and the incumbent director of Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. He is a recipient of the highest Indian award in the medical category, Dr. B. C. Roy Award, from the Medical Council of India and the rank of Honorary Brigadier from the President of India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2000.
Jagdev Singh Guleria is an Indian general physician, cardiologist and a former Dean and Professor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Balswarup Chaubey was an Indian nephrologist and medical academic. A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, Chaubey was the retired dean of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur and had served as the secretary of the Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association.

C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. He heads the National Board of Examinations as its president, the highest academic position in the medical sector in India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medical science.
