Ganesh Kumar Mani is an Indian cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, reported to have performed over 20,500 Coronary artery bypass surgeries. [1] [2] [3] He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education. Biography

Saving the life of my friend Dr. E Sreedharan. He had developed multiple blockages and was unconscious at the air port. I was confused about my strategy to save him. Finally, I prepared for his arrival at Apollo Hospital, temporary pace makers were in place and he was operated upon the next day. I feel happy and proud when my memory takes me back that eventful life saving day, says Dr. Mani. [2]

Ganesh Kumar Mani hails from Delhi and did schooling at MEAHS School in the city to pass the higher secondary examination in 1964. [5] Choosing medicine as his career, Mani graduated from the Maulana Azad Medical College, MBBS, in 1969 and secured the post graduate degree of MS in general surgery from the same institution in 1975. [3] Subsequently, he joined the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, [3] passed MCh in cardiothoracic surgery in 1979 and the next year, in 1980, passed MNAMS in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery from the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Mani is reported to have performed 500 consecutive bypass surgeries with zero mortality rate, [1] [5] [6] with an overall reduction in the morbidity rate of the hospital he worked for, down to one percent from the earlier 20 percent. [6] He is considered as a pioneer of a technique known as Beating Heart Coronary Artery Bypass with autologous blood with minimal to nil usage of homologous blood transfusion, [1] [7] [6] and is rated by many as one of the safest cardiac surgeons in India. Ganesh Mani is married to Manju, the marriage solemnized on 7 July 1973 and the couple has two children. The family, together, looks after the management of Mani Heart Care. [8] He lives in Greater Kailesh I and is also involved in social activities and community programmes there. [3]

Positions

Mani started his career as a faculty member at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore [6] and moved as the Specialist Surgeon to the Indian Railways Southern Railway HQ Hospital in Perambur in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, [6] in 1984. He worked there till 1989 when he returned to Delhi as the Chief Cardiac Surgeon and Director of Cardiac Surgery at the Batra Hospital and Medical Research Centre, [6] a position he held till 1995. [5] The next move was as the Senior Cardiothoracic Consultant of the Apollo Hospital, Indraprastha, a 700 bedded tertiary care hospital in the Indian capital, [9] [6] [7] working there from 1996 to 2003. [5] He has also worked as the visiting consultant at hospitals such as Saroj Hospital, [6] Delhi (2001-2003), Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal (2003), Delhi Heart and Lung Institute (2003-2009), Golden Heart Institute of the Jaipur Golden Hospital (2005-2009), the Mool Chand Hospital, Delhi (2008-2009) and as the Director of the Pushpanjali Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Crosslay Remedies. In 2013, Mani moved to Saket City Hospital, Delhi and is the Chairman, Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, there. [1] He is also the Managing Director of Mani Heart Care, a facility he founded in 1990. [8] [5]

Ganesh Mani is a former member of the executive council of the Delhi Medical Council (1998-2004), a former member of the Medical Advisory Board Chronic Care Foundation (2003-2010) [6] and is the President of the Health Education And Research Trust, Delhi and a National Committee member of the Indian Healthcare Federation. Awards and recognitions

Mani has been honoured by many institutions and organizations. He was a member of the 9th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica, in 1989-90. [5] [6] The Government of India, in 2013, conferred the civilian award of Padma Shri on Dr. Mani for his services to the field of medicine. Panangipalli Venugopal is an Indian Cardiovascular surgeon and hospital administrator from Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India who is widely regarded as a pioneer in cardiac surgery. The Government of India honored him, in 1998, with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his services to the field of Medicine.

Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

Stanley John was an Indian cardiothoracic surgeon, a former professor at the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is reported to have performed the first surgical repairs of Ebstein's anomaly, Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva (RSOV) and Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV) in India. He assisted in performing the first open heart surgery in India while working at CMCH. During his tenure of 25 years at the institution, he mentored several known surgeons such as V.V. Bashi, A. G. K. Gokhale, J. S. N. Murthy and Ganesh Kumar Mani. Later, John joined Yellamma Dasappa Hospital, Bengaluru at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1975. He served as the 13th President of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) between 1982 and 1983.

Prem Chandra Dhanda was an Indian physician and a medical academic. He was the principal of the Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and the director of G. B. Pant Hospital, New Delhi. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1962, for his contributions to medicine.

Gopi Chand Mannam is an Indian cardiothoracic surgeon and the chief cardiothoracic surgeon at Star Hospitals in Hyderabad, known for the performance of over 3,000 pediatric heart surgeries. After graduating from Guntur Medical College in 1981, he worked in Jamaica for two years at Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston and Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital in Westmoreland, before moving to the UK where he secured a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1986, followed by another fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow in 1987. He worked in the UK for five years, at the end of which he secured the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of London before returning to India in 1994 to join the Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad as a senior consultant in cardiothoracic surgery.
