Sivapatham Vittal is an Indian surgical endocrinologist, considered by many as the Father of Surgical Endocrinology in India. [1] [2] [3] [4] The Government of India honored Vittal in 2011, with the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri. [5] [6]

Biography

Sivapatham Vittal was born on 30 August 1941 and graduated in medicine from Madras Medical College from where he also obtained his post graduate degree. [2] Joining his alma mater as a faculty member, he is reported to have been instrumental in establishing the Department of Endocrinology at Madras Medical College in 1987, known to be the first such department in India [1] and was its first head of the department, a post he held till 1999. Vittal, the founder president of the Indian Association of Endocrine Surgeons, is a former president of the Association of Surgeons of India and the International College of Surgeons, India chapter. [2] [1] [3] He has served as the surgical tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has held the chair of its India chapter. [2] [1] [3] He is also a member of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons [2] [1] [3] and the International Medical Sciences Academy. [3] He is credited with a book and articles on Endocrinology [8] and has been a member of the editorial boards of journals such as Indian Journal of Surgery, Thyroid Surgery, International Surgery. [1] He has also delivered key note addresses at several conferences and seminars and has served as the visiting professor at many universities. [3]

An emeritus professor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, [4] Sivapatham Vittal, post his retirement from Madras Medical College, is associated with the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai as an endocrine surgeon. [4] [3] He is also one of the founders of Sree Sai Krishna Hospital, Chennai. [3] He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the International College of Surgeons, the International Medical Sciences Academy. [4]

He is a member of the board of trustees of the Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai.

Awards and recognitions

Sivapatham Vittal is a recipient of the 1995 Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. [2] [4] [3] [1] Two years later, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh honored him with the Silver Medallion and the next year, in 1998, the Government of Tamil Nadu awarded him the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award. [2] [4] [3] In 2001, he received the Human Excellence Award from the Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence. [4] [3]

The Association of Surgeons of India conferred Dr B M Sundaravadanam Best Teacher Award on Vittal in 2005, [2] and the same year he received the Overseas Gold medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. [2] [4] [3] [1] The Teachers' Teacher Award reached him in 2007 [2] and Madras Medical College awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Madras Medical College in 2010. The Bidhan Chandra Roy Award was instituted in 1962 in memory of Dr. B. C. Roy by the Medical Council of India. It is presented by the President of India in New Delhi every year on July 1, National Doctors' Day. It is also the highest honour that can be achieved by a doctor in India.

Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath is the Indian founder and chairman emeritus of Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, one of India's largest charitable eye hospitals. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He received the Padma Bhushan, third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India in 1996. He also received many other awards, including Padma Shri and Dr. B. C. Roy Award.

Dr. Kodaganur S. Gopinath, MS, FAMS, FRCS (Edin) is an Indian surgical oncologist, known for his pioneering work on oncological research. He is a recipient of many awards including Dr. B. C. Roy Award, considered to be the premier medical honour in the country. The President of India recognised his services to the field of oncology, by awarding him the fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri, in 2010.

Thayil John Cherian, popularly known as TJC, was a Malayali cardio-thoracic surgeon, from Kerala, India, known for his social commitment and compassionate approach. The Government of India honoured him twice, first by awarding him the Padma Shri, in 1972 and, later in 1992, with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his services to the field of Medicine.

M. Subhadra Nair is an Indian gynaecologist, medical teacher and social worker, reportedly credited to have assisted over 50,000 child births. The Government of India honoured her, in 2014, with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her services to the field of medicine, the first gynaecologist to receive the Padma award.

Shashank R. Joshi is an Indian endocrinologist, diabetologist and medical researcher, considered by many as one of the prominent practitioners of the trade in India. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the field of medicine. He is a part of the COVID-19 Task Force for the state of Maharashtra, India.

Madanur Ahmed Ali, is an Indian surgical gastroenterologist from Chennai. An alumnus of Madras Medical College, he is credited with several publications in peer reviewed journals. The Government of India honored Ali in 2011, with the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri.

Mohan Kameswaran is an Indian otorhinolaryngologist, medical academic and the founder of MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing, a Chennai-based institution providing advanced training in audiology and speech-language pathology. He is one of the pioneers of cochlear implant surgery in India and a visiting professor at Rajah Muthiah Medical College of the Annamalai University and Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. C. U. Velmurugendran is an Indian neurologist, medical writer and the chairman and head of the Department of Neurology at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. He is an honorary professor at the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati and has contributed chapters to books including Diseases of the Spinal Cord, published in 2012. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medicine.

Natesan Rangabashyam (1936–2013), popularly known NR, was an Indian surgical gastroenterologist and medical academic, known for his pioneering efforts in the fields of surgical gastroenterology and proctology in India. He was known to have established the department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Madras Medical College and introduced the first MCh course in Surgical Gastroenterology in India. A former honorary surgeon to the President of India, he received B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, twice. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2002, for his contributions to medical science.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Thenumgal Poulose Jacob</span>

Thenumgal Poulose Jacob is an Indian surgeon specializing in vascular surgery, and the founder Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Madras Medical College. Born in Aluva, in the south Indian state of Kerala, to Thenumgal Poulose and Mariam in a Malayali family, he did his under-graduate studies at UC College before graduating in medicine from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, and secured his MS degree from the same institution. He started his practice under government service at Madras Medical College where he helped establish the department of vascular surgery in 1978 and served as its founder head until his superannuation in 1993. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2014, for his contributions to medical science. He is married to Esther and the couple has a daughter, Siji Jacob, an academic and a son, Hasum Jacob Thenumgal, an engineer at TCS. He is in private practice at T. P. Jacob Clinic in Royapuram, Chennai and is also a consultant vascular surgeon at MV Hospitals for Diabetes, Royapuram.

Arjunan Rajasekaran is an Indian urologist and one of the pioneers of male infertility therapy in India. He is a former Professor and Head of the Department of Urology at the Madras Medical College, the founder of Madras Andrology and Assisted Reproduction Research Centre, a Chennai-based male infertility clinic, and a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category. He heads the National Board of Examinations as its president, the highest academic position in the medical sector in India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medical science.

B. M. Sundaravadanan was an Indian surgeon, educationalist and a philanthropist from Madras. He was an alumnus of the Madras Medical College and the First Honorary surgeon of Madras Medical College. He also served as the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.
