Saumitra Rawat is an Indian surgical gastroenterologist [1] [2] and the head of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. [3] [4] [5] The Government of India honoured him in 2015 with the award of Padma Shri. [6] [1] [7]

Biography

Saumitra Rawat was born on 23 September 1965. [8] He graduated in medicine in 1988 and secured his master's degree in 1992 from Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi. [8] [9] After his senior residency, Rawat went to UK in 1995 for advanced training in laparoscopic, Gastroenterology (GI) and Hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) surgery [10] at Leeds. [9] [11] He served as an undergraduate lecturer at University of Manchester and, later, as a Postgraduate trainer at the University of Liverpool. [9] He received the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow in 1997 and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998. [8] [9] [11] He worked as a surgical tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England [9] and as a consultant at such institutions as Glasgow Royal Infirmary, East Cheshire NHS Trust and Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. [8] [9] During this period, he also received the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. [9] He returned to India in 2012 [8] and took up the position of the Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi and is its chairman. [11] He continues to serve Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester as an honorary consultant and is associated with the Royal College of Surgeons of England as a member of its Court of Examiners. Legacy and positions

Rawat's contributions are reported in bringing laparoscopic and robotic surgery for Gastrointestinal cancer to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. [8] He and his team is credited with the first successful performance of robotic and laparoscopic Oesophagectomy in North India, the first robotic hepatico-jejunostomy in India and the first low anterior resection in North India. [8] Reports also credit him with the introduction of an Enhanced recovery programme for cancer Surgery. [8] Besides publishing several articles in peer reviewed journals, [12] he has also contributed to Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery [13] and Operative Surgery, [14] two reference books published by Oxford University Press. [8] [10]

Rawat is the editor of the Indian edition of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, [15] the official journal of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. [8] [16] He is a member of professional bodies and societies such as the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, British Medical Association, British Transplant Society, Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity, British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society, Indian Medical Association and the Association of Surgeons of India. [8] He has participated in several conferences, workshops and CME classes as moderator, coordinator and organizer, Vision 2020 - Young Indian Leaders Conclave was one such event. [8]

Awards and recognitions

Rawat is a recipient of Academic Excellence Award from Delhi Medical Association and has also received awards from the three laparoscopic surgery societies operating in India such as Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES), Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI), Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of India (SELSI). [8] He has received the Bundelkhand Gaurav Samman from Union Minister, Uma Bharti. [8] The Government of India included him in the 66th Republic Day honours list, in 2015, for the civilian award of Padma Shri. [7] [8]

Pyloromyotomy is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the muscle fibers of the pyloric muscle are cut. This is typically done in cases where the contents from the stomach are inappropriately stopped by the pyloric muscle, causing the stomach contents to build up in the stomach and unable to be appropriately digested. The procedure is typically performed in cases of "hypertrophic pyloric stenosis" in young children. Amit Prabhakar Maydeo is an Indian gastroenterologist and endoscopy expert known for his pioneering efforts on therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). In 2013, he was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education. His son, Dr. Rohan Maydeo, is a surgeon from MGM Medical College and Hospital, Aurangabad.

Samiran Nundy is an Indian gastrointestinal surgeon, medical academic, writer and the President of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh. Surinder Kumar Sama is an Indian gastroenterologist, known for his expertise in endocrinology and diabetology. He is considered by many as the Father of Gastroenterology in India. The discovery of Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease is attributed to him, which he described in a 1962 medical paper, co-authored with Ramalingaswami and Wig. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2004 for his pioneering research on liver diseases including Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and Hepatitis B. Sama also received the highest Indian medical honour of Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2004.

Tehemton Erach Udwadia was an Indian surgeon and gastroenterologist, considered by many as the father of laparoscopic surgery in India. He was a general surgeon at two Mumbai hospitals, Breach Candy Hospital and Hinduja Hospital and was the founder president of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006 and the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan in 2017 for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of urology robotics (URobotic) surgeries in India. He is a former head of the department of urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Dr Malvika Sabharwal is an Indian gynecologist, laparoscopic surgeon and obstetrician at the Nova Specialty Hospitals of the Apollo Healthcare Group and at Jeewan Mala Hospital, New Delhi. The team led by her has been credited with the successful performance of the removal of the largest recorded fibroid through laparoscopic surgery. She leads the Gynae Endoscopy, a team of 140 doctors, involved in endoscopic surgical practices related to gynecology.

Natesan Rangabashyam (1936–2013), popularly known NR, was an Indian surgical gastroenterologist and medical academic, known for his pioneering efforts in the fields of surgical gastroenterology and proctology in India. He was known to have established the department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Madras Medical College and introduced the first MCh course in Surgical Gastroenterology in India. A former honorary surgeon to the President of India, he received B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, twice. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2002, for his contributions to medical science.

Shiv Narain Kureel, is an Indian pediatric surgeon, medical academic and writer, and the professor and Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at King George's Medical University, Lucknow (U.P).

Giriraj Singh Bora is an Indian liver transplant surgeon. He is the founder member of the Liver Transplant Society of India. Bora was the first surgeon to successfully transplant a liver in Rajasthan. He carried out the first deceased donor and the first living donor liver transplants in Rajasthan and has been instrumental in starting a liver transplant program in the region.
